Corona, Alvarez and Antuna were specifically targeted. Mark them hard and the Galaxy has no possession. Without possession, the team is very frail defensively. Tons of space in midfield. They're good midfielders, but weren't set-up to succeed, IMO (or at least, had now answer for SJ's plan).

I don't think Feltscher & Skjrdh6e9jhd helped though. The latter is simply shite & the former frequently gets caught up field.

But no midfield cohesion, little creativity, Bingham and some iffy finishing by SJ are the only reasons we weren't drubbed by 4 or more goals.

At this point in the season, I'm looking for GBS's ideas to start coming together but I'm at a loss as to what they actually are.

I feel like we're being found out & things are going to get worse rather than better.

They had 32 shots to our 5 and 16 on target to our 1.

    That's indefensible.

I don't even know where to start.

GBS was completely out coached in this game. Why the hell didn't he make half time adjustments when it was clear we were being over run. We had no midfield tonight, just a giant hole in the middle of the field, was JDS playing center back, because that's where he was most of the night. No idea what Corona was doing.

Both Alvarez's sucked. Efra looked 17, if that's as fast as he is at 17, he is going to struggle, but I guess you have to give him minutes. I personally am not convinced. Should have started Pontius and Ema.

Zlatan looks 37, the guy doesn't move at all. He was simply out run to everything. Bad passing night.

Skittles should never start another game. He can't defend, doesn't go forward, and can't pass.

How many home games are we going to be out possessed by the away team? We clearly have the talent, so what's the problem? San Jose simply ran harder than us, that's just a lack of desire. I think GBS was out classed, I worry about next week....

The answer to handling physical play is 1 and 2 touch passing, especially when you’re receiving the ball facing your own goal. All four of the players you mention (I’m including both Alvarez’s) overdribble and try to turn with defenders on their backs way too often. That style invites physical play, leads to turnovers and helps launch counterattacks for our opponents.

There is a reason the most effective players (like Donovan and Rooney and even Messi) play so many simple 1-touch passes before they even attempt a tricky turn. They let the ball do most of the work, wearing their ball-chasing opponents down while saving themselves wear and tear from getting hit repeatedly. Plus it helps them lull their opponents into laying off a bit and catches them off guard when they do go for it.

tldr vers: don’t keep running into trouble, pass around it.

I feel like GBS desperately wants us to be something we are not in our home games. He seems to think we can dominate our opponents and have possession and that will lead to Efra (a total luxury player) having time to be creative and our wingbacks (both of which can’t defend well) getting forward.

The reality is very different. And the approach exacerbates our weaknesses. We are much more effective in a cautious road mentality.

This game has happened each of the last four seasons where we get found out hard. With our upcoming schedule we are in a world of hurt potentially.

Really feel that GBS is not coaching well at home.

I feel like Steres, Polenta and Gonzalez are amongst the strengths of this team. Not weaknesses.

I agree. They have been our most consistent players by far. Sadly they have little competition for that title.

One of the best goalkeeping performances I have ever seen! Bingham is now #1 in MLS in shots saved and in shots faced. A terrible statistic for our team!!

"Bingham made 14 -- yes, 14 -- saves in the match to try and hold back the Earthquakes. He maintained a shutout until the 61st minute, but with San Jose posting a staggering 32-to-5 edge in shots on the night, the visitors would not be held back, in spite of Bingham's efforts.

Still, the GK nearly broke an MLS record with his 14-save performance, coming just one short of the all-time mark, set by Tony Meola in 1997 with the MetroStars."

Surprised your club didn't fold after getting bent two times in less than a month by the same squad. LOLOLOL.

I realize that young players are inconsistent and need minutes to develop, but Efrain played like a poor reincarnation of Freddy Adu tonight. Like Adu, he overdribbled, was easily dispossessed and played ineffective defense the few times he spurred himself to attempt it. All in all a major step backwards. Also as long as I am dumping on the kid, he also isn't a winger. Absolutely no pace going forward.

As far as the right back and right wing positions, I would start Araujo a the back and start Feltscher at the wing until Romain returns or the Galaxy get another player. As much as this board complains about his crossing, he is still better than the rest of the available alternatives.

Yep they make me think of the scene from Temple of Doom

Antuna and Alvarez versus San Jose tackles
    Finesse versus Brute Force

You end up on your butt if you are too cute on the ball to often against a rough player.
Either attack or pass,...never over dribble!!!

    That goes double for Antuna.
You aren't JDS who is strong enough to get not get knocked off the ball when
he does it. But even he is frustrating whenever he overdoes it.
You aren't playing for Mexico right now kid so don't expect a foul call
    to always go your way.

    Ok boys play nice.

Have to admit I’ve very much enjoyed watching your team this season. Very impressive energy and commitment all over the field by your boys last night. Best of luck.

Your team did well for the first 20 minutes but I think your coach's strategy failed as he was trying to emulate our style of play without the players to do it. Almeyda trains our players like Spartans on a treadmill, it's a whole team philosophy, attack as one, defend as one and nobody drops until dead from exhaustion. Quite frankly, we Quakes fans are in shock as to our change of fortunes from adding one competent coach.

Give our kiddies a break. Galaxy fans have had a bad season here or there, but have not experienced the sort of soul-crushing, fetid awfulness we have had to endure for over ten years (punctuated by ONE miraculous, unexpected gift in 2012) perpetrated by an owner who is seemingly indifferent to team, and apparently just in it as an investment. We envy your ownership’s willingness to spend more than our entire team’s payroll on one, two, or three ‘name’ players, while we must make do with a variety of USL dregs, castoffs from other MLS teams, and DPs of unknown provenance from obscure leagues. We know we’re bargain basement, so you must excuse our glee at being able to humble one of the Nieman-Marcus MLS franchises...

Yeah the Quakes seem to employ the style Klopp & Pochettino have to great success in the PL. Onalfo tried to do the same without the players or training methods and it was an unmitigated disaster. If training reports are to be believed Scheletto has implemented the right fitness regime, but doesn’t have the right players.

Which isn’t to absolve GBS, one glaring difference Klopp & Poch while having their preferred “pressure for 90 minutes” they frequently adjust formations and tactics as required.

Again limited exposure on my part this season, but I haven’t seen much in the way of adjusting tactics when needed

Alamyda played through a disastrous start of the season without wavering in what he wanted to achieve.

I feel like GBS is doing the same with our team with our home tactics. Perhaps he views this season as a throw away one while he gets the personnel he needs into place during this one. Not sure I have confidence in this approach.

Upon more reflection, I just don’t think we should give up on GBS. We’ve had too much turnover. Let the man figure this out and work it out. BUT he needs to do two things:

    1) get rid of the dead weight at the end of this season. We have too many players that don’t fit the system, or don’t produce or both. I’ll judge him when he gets his guys into the team.

    2) defer to kinnear a little more. This team needs a little more bite. I’d like to see a team that fights together like we did at the end of last year (except for that Houston game). Kinnear knows this league and the players.

    3) get Ibra to buy in again. Ibra isn’t acting like a DP. It’s up to GBS to get the most out of him and watching Ibra phone it in is unacceptable.
