I just hope it's not a RSJ scenario where you plug your kids into the team regardless if they're shite or not, and hope they go pro or something. Owner was trash. Backing this team to do big things, hopefully.
They haven't played a game but they're already expanding. We are Atletico San Jose FC, a club expanding in San Jose, CA with the ambition to become a professional club and join the MLS in the future. (Emphasis added). They will rank high on Grant Wahl's next index, no doubt.
Not terribly upset over this loss. Other than the scoreline, we dominated nearly every aspect of this game. We keep playing like this, especially on the road, and we will be just fine. A couple sloppy moments for us cost us at least a tie. The first goal really started with a poor pass by Wondo that went out of bounds. The Loons took the throw in and proceeded down the field to score. Judson then played a nice give and go with Boxall for the second, with Vega needing to be a bit braver. The third was just because we were pressing for the equalizer. Meh. Minnesota did a good job bunkering and closing down the lanes and putting players between the ball and the goal. Have to give them credit for that, but, we were bossing them. I haven’t seen the game, I only read the stats and recap on mlssoccer. I’m surprised that no one is writing in this thread about Tommy’s goal... Also, normally when a team gives up goals in the first 5-7 minutes of each half and in stoppage time, it means that one or a few players weren’t focused. I know the stats show the Quakes as dominant, but which players would you point out as unfocused in those 3 instances? Also, it looked like the problems happened right up the middle? So that would mean Judson?
@bsman Bob, hope you’re OK, and that the needle in your arm was not heroin... Minnesota United FC - San Jose Earthquakes (Wednesday, 7/3) in-game thread [R]
He did mention he would be donating platelets at the start of the game. I think that’s sort of like donating blood but different. It could be a new slang term I’m not hip to, but I don’t think so.
Nah - I was donating platelets. It takes about 1.5 hours or more. All things considered, heroin is probably more fun, but I keep going back for more (that was my 179th donation.)
Props to you guys, you just kept attacking in waves...there was a lot of Loon 2017-style defending with desperate challenges and flying bodies everywhere. Glad we don't see you again this year...during the regular season at least.
The Quakes played well. At least we were in the game until the end.Just imagine if this were Stahre's team or our team of March 2019? Were the whistles I kept hearing in the stands something that many Minnesota fans use? Are they supposed to be the sounds of Loons?
Any friend of Manny Lagos is a friend of the Quakes. Ike Opara as well. Osvaldo Alonso, not so much...
From the MLS website write up on the game: Phil West: "Though the Quakes' current unbeaten streak has come to an end, they've done quite a bit to help themselves in the playoff race — though perhaps teams now have a bit of a blueprint for how to play them." Lol! What exactly is the blueprint they gleaned from Minnesota? Hope to get a lead on a lucky bounce and then bunker like hell as the Quakes attack in waves and pepper your goal with shots? Brilliant!
You hate Ozzie when he's not wearing your jersey. Like I did last year. The "blueprint" may be the hold up play of Rodriguez. My guess is the bulk of your fouls last night were trying to get the ball away from Angelo, who is really really good at hold up. When he's got that part of his game going with Quintero, Ibarra, Finlay , etc. making runs, we can be lethal. The problem with that blueprint is I don't know many other teams in the league who can pull it off. I love having Ike Opara on our backline. We'll be even better back there once we get Romain Metanire back from African Nations Cup. I don't think you're going to be the currently above the line team that Portland will inevitably replace (Houston or Dallas may get that honor).
I don't think it's the fans. The PA plays a Loon call at the start of each half and on the restart after we score. Thought they wore it out last Saturday against Cincinnati.
The blueprint is how to bunker effectively. We had no answers for all our possession toward the end of the game. Granted teams need to have an Opara and Quintero level player in the front and back and not too many do. You all are WAAAAAAY too high on the Quakes after that performance. We had no answers. Yes we were a little bit unlucky early (but especially lucky on TT's goal) in the game and MUFC was a little lucky on the one bad deflection goal. Credit to MUFC for a good game plan for their team against ours. Positives: 1) Magnus was the best Quake on the field. I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST WROTE THAT. I just threw up a little. Opportunities: 1) First goal happens because our D wants to give too much room. Are they being coached that way or are they just scared to close down players 10-20 yards from goal? It's a pattern that is happening pretty much every game and needs to stop immediately. Make the other team create the space, don't just give it to them. 2) Danny needs to start. Bring in Wondo as a 3rd forward as needed, when the opposing D is tired. 3) Judson 4) Lopez was back to being ineffective. It was nice to have one good game I guess.
I love the manual score board. Brought back memories of playing Little League Baseball with the manual scoreboards just past the outfield fence.
I’m afraid that might be the blueprint. We couldn’t break down the bunker. We took a lot of shots but none of them were very effective. They triple teamed Vako whenever he tried to dribble into the box. Espinoza’s crosses never found their mark due to the congestion. The only thing that worked was Tommy dribbling into the box and they had to foul him. Marie and Salinas looked good when they came in but it didn’t end up being any more effective. But like you say, they have to score first before they can commit to bunkering. To bust a bunker we need fast movement and passing from side to side to open things up. I’d say we’re still a bit too slow to do this yet. MA will eventually fix this.
At one time, the Earthquakes had the ultimate bunker buster: But alas, no longer. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
No. Wrong neighborhood for it, and not a lot of room to set it up. The pregame flyover was cool, though.
People in the area were warned about the fireworks but not the flyover and thought we were being invaded.
Oh too bad. After the Cincy game and the seven goals, I’m sure the 7 goals and loon noises would get on anyone’s nerves!
