16' 0-1 Lavelle and Heath exchange passes through box top right. Lavelle finally turns to arc top right, shoots left instep bend just over crossbar center. 17' 0-1 Mead cuts inside through 30m mid-left, vertical through-ball try (to White) intercepted by Dahlkemper. 19' 1-1 England possess around circle top wide right, switch left to Mead at 15m wide left. O'Hara leaves White to close down, Dahlkemper comes out and fronts White, White lurks on her back shoulder. Mead touches down to 9m wide left, bends left instep ground cross to 7m left post, inswinging past Dahlkemper. White reads the inswing better, lunge-poke half-volley flick across mouth off back of right post high with Naeher stranded, deflects into back right high. White scored the same kind of goal for England's 2nd vs. Norway, so we know it's coming, but the execution was cm-perfect. What a goal! Ellen White takes the lead in the Golden Boot race with her 6th goal of the #FIFAWWC. Great cross from Mead, clinical finish from White. 1-1! pic.twitter.com/U5GoaxbIRv— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) July 2, 2019
On paper, it really is a good tactical choice, and I’m not saying this because it seems to have worked so far. Rapinoe hasn’t been particularly special this tournament. She’s been the recipient of a many high conversion rate chances. Press has better legs. Not as good in the open field but better with a quick 1-2 touches to create space for a shot. Bigger too. Against quality sides that (at least in theory) don’t give as much space down the sides and in the seams, that’s probably a good trade off. The only concern with Press is her confidence. It’s gutsy from a PR/media standpoint, so Ellis must like what she sees from Press in terms of confidence and mentality on this trip.
25' 1-1 USA cross to 8m left post, Morgan jumps backward into Bronze jumping forward, they knock heads and Morgan stays down in a ball. Lavelle shoots left low roundhouse from ~arc top right to 1/4 right low, Telford dives and blocks right. Stoppage for head injury ... Morgan resumes. Rose forces a save from Telford! Morgan collides with Bronze on the play and stays down for a moment, but can continue. #FIFAWWC pic.twitter.com/PFsY9dstEQ— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) July 2, 2019 26' 1-1 Drop ball to Stokes, England switch right.
That was the last thing that Mead should be doing in that position. Slipping at the worst of times. Almost an own goal against the US! It was Sauerbrunn.
