Bento when asked to define his "style": "Regardless of position, I select players with exceptional technical and passing ability. Then, there's the mental aspect--how quickly a player counter-presses after losing the ball and tracks back in transition from attack to defence." https://t.co/1lLfnf65Jz— Steve Han • 한만성 (@realstevescores) June 10, 2019
I think he experimented more than any matches today. I hope he starts using our youngsters more often.
already happening? Think HHC's technical deficiency is getting exposed - should have a purely tactical role from now on. I can see KMJ and HUJ being exposed next. KMJ plays some risky/dumb af passes, and HUJ must've sold his soul to the devil for his recent hot streak... he'll revert to the mean and go 10 games without scoring. HIB's going to be fine, he's only 22. With Paik impressing and the introduction of LKI impending, it's time to move on from goalkeepers that can only stop shots, fullbacks who only cross, forwards that only hustle, strikers that only poach. Yeah I'm talking about KSG & CHW, LY & HC, HHC, HUJ - not that these guys aren't producing results, but they just don't fit in the type of football the team is moving towards. I reckon we can play some damn good tippy tappy football with a line up like this: -----SHM---JDW---- --KCH---LKI---LJS-- ----------PSH--------- -LB-KYG-KMJ-KMH- ---ball playing GK---
With PSH and LKI in the middle we'll be run over, especially if you got two other lightweights in the wings. Moreover, we still haven't solved the problem of having no good options in LB and RB. If anything, we should think about working with a 3-5-2 formation like Hiddink did in 2002. Players like HHC and LJS can have the freedom to play in the wings like SJG and LYP. So I would go with something like: SHM - SJH (or HUJ or JDW) LJS - LKI - PSH - KCH - HHC KYG - KMJ - KKW (or KMH) GK I would also find a spot for the JWY somewhere.
didn't 2002 squad play 3-4-3? which, essentially.. shares many values with 4-3-3 and total football philosophy. the problem i have with 3-5-2 & using HHC + LJS as wingbacks. unless the plan is to defend deep, park the bus with 1 bank of 5, 1 bank of 4 (more or less) with isolated FW up top... it is a bad idea. in that case, HHC & LJS are just pointless... if the goal is to play much more modern wingback system, of which.. they are required in midfield more than covering back to cover space... it requires 3 good CBs w/ SPEED who can cover the flanks. none from Korea.. have real speed to match top FWs nor are good 1v1 defenders. probably a better idea to play Ji DW in midfield. he isn't as necessary as focal point imo if Lee KI starts. Lee KI does a dang good job of controlling & protecting the ball... granted, we haven't seen him do against adults yet. either way, Kwon CH and Lee SW are probably better partners for Son HM in such system while Ji DWs physical trait, overall solid technique & work rate can help Paik SH in midfield. Need someone better who can offer something similar on the right instead of Lee JS too imo. Or straight up ball-winning decent CM type..for balance purpose.
probably true, but man city gets away with playing de bruyne and silva as center mids.. if we can get proficient enough with aggressive counterpress and stay horizontally compact then we might be able to get away with it in theory.. It’s a long shot but Paik was impressive in the holder role despite only practicing it for a few days, so maybe he could learn the role. And Bento’s team selection suggests that he doesn’t stress the need for a destroyer type mid. I like JDW was a forward bc he can link up and offer an aerial threat for crosses, and I think KCH and LJS always have performed well together since EAFF days.
Fernandinho... not only is he great at covering space but also, flat out physical ball winner.... Paik SH isn't Fernandinho. also, Korea isn't going to dominate possession like Man City the role Paik SH played isn't entirely new for him.. just as single pivot was something he had not in the past according to him. as for Bento not needing a destroyer type, I don't find that to be true. Korea just doesn't have one (except Han KY but he is damaged good now with injuries). as far as I have seen, Korea doesn't press aggressively (except in few spurts) under Bento. 4-4-2 diamond often shifts to compact 4-4-2 flat in defensive shape.... more or less covering space & press once opposition move past half line. on Ji DW, his strength isn't attacking crosses but winning 50/50 duels, and hold the ball up + link up. that is something he can do as two way midfield player. he did it all the time at FCA. it isn't necessary that he play as FW in 4-4-2 diamond.. where split strikers who can run behind the defense is much more useful.
Yea, he's resorted to nutmegs in the midfield or our half to look good cause he chokes in the final third.
Nike contract ends this year. With Son and Kangin both being Adidas players I hope they become new sponsors for KFA.
