Freedom of the press.. JUST IN: Treasury Secretary violates federal law from 1924. There. I fixed it for you. https://t.co/8964YVYRPZ— Ciara Torres-Spelliscy (@ProfCiara) May 6, 2019 Very fine people... Member of border militia that detained 200 migrants at gunpoint told police another member had said, “Why are we...not lining them up and shooting them? We have to go back to Hitler days and put them all in a gas chamber” per report I obtained under FOIA: https://t.co/XLUCBIAGTo pic.twitter.com/Bdtv3H28sp— Ken Klippenstein (@kenklippenstein) May 6, 2019
My father was a jockey. He raced on Derby day in the 1970s. I mucked stalls and hotwalked growing up and farmwork was one of my first jobs growing up. Let Trump make mouth noises. If anyone wants to mark it down to PC, they can refer to the 1987 Derby/Alysheba.
Best comment in the Royal Baby Name thread: "They wanted to call him 'Tom Jones' but they can't because it's not unusual"
More defying: Don McGahn won't comply with House Democrats' subpoena https://t.co/V0rawjeuS8— Michael F Ozaki MD (@brontyman) May 7, 2019 No Spying: 1125796075615465475 is not a valid tweet id No Shame: Completely shameless -- @senatemajldr McConnell, who did more than anyone to prevent Obama from going public with concerns about Russian interference in 2016, is now on Senate floor mocking Dems for belatedly "awakening to the dangers of Russian aggression." pic.twitter.com/NEFMbURDi2— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) May 7, 2019
The executive branch has reached the stage of open defiance of the legislative branch. Next will be open defiance of the judicial branch (if it hasn't co-opted that branch already), then will come open defiance of the election results and media censorship. That is how the authoritarian game is played. Erdogan is in the final stage, being further along in the process than is Trump.
There are ways to take care of dictators. You just need someone totally committed and willing to take one for the team.
I think you will like this piece. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/05/2020-election-approach-shouldnt-end-impeachment.html Here's one interesting excerpt. "We make the same mistake of not acting on the ongoing threats to congressional oversight, to free and fair voting, and to foreign cyberattacks because an election might solve it at our peril. An election may well become the problem. Doing less than absolutely everything possible to reinstate the rule of law in America today in the hopes that there will be less election interference next time, or more benign election interference, or less purposive election interference, is insane. This isn’t a joke. This is a full-fledged crisis of constitutional democracy and the checking function of Congress. It’s heartening to think that in a year and a half we can vote our way out of our predicament, but it’s a bit like suggesting that we have a good long national think about how things are currently going and tend to it all in 2020, when all the systems that were already broken in 2016 are more broken. If Democrats in the House seriously believe that the attorney general has covered up illegal activity and is refusing to accept congressional oversight, they should model seriousness. Which means that they should do something about it, beyond waiting for the problem to be voted away by large margins." Her basic argument is the faux-savvy "if we impeach him that will just strengthen him" point of view is too sanguine about the current state of our democracy. If you believe we are in a crisis, act like it. In a crisis, you wouldn't nominate the most electable Democrat and hope that voter suppression and foreign interference isn't strong enough to re-elect Trump. You'd fire back with every weapon you can get your hands on. It's contradictory for Pelosi to say impeachment is a waste of time if the Senate won't convict, and for her also to say that Trump might not leave office. If you believe Trump is really that bad AND that the GOP will protect him no matter what, then a) Trump isn't the problem so beating him in 2020 can't solve it AND b) Congressional Republicans are a clear and present danger, so get them on the hook with a vote supporting Trump, a vote you can hang them with later.
I wonder if Trump will tweet about THIS caravan? And the #CaravanToCanada is departing from St. Paul now! Should be getting to Fort Frances, Canada 🇨🇦 around 3 p.m. to get our insulin. #MNinsulin4all #insulin4all pic.twitter.com/YT15gbyRzL— Quinn Nystrom (@QuinnNystrom) May 4, 2019
So Trump should remember that it goes both ways: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/10/us/politics/donald-trump-hillary-clinton.html Should he not be re-elected but refuse to go -- and instead decide to fabricate some crisis as a reason to ensconce himself (such as claiming the election was fixed against him) I'm sure there are plenty of people who would be happy to try and turn his head into a cloud of pink mist. And that's the thing -- with everything going on with Iran, NK, etc. it is not a stretch to think he'll create some crisis and then try to declare martial law or some such other scheme to stay in office.
