I didn't see any groups of school kids on Wednesday and it wasn't the lowest attendance I've seen for a midweek game. NYCFC are struggling to create a pervasive reason to show up to games. They have an inexperienced coach, lack any players of note and can't win games playing a style of football that is, quite frankly, putrid. At least the Red Bulls have a bunch of home-grown players to cheer for and an exciting style of play at times. It's just that the Metrostars generation are getting older and it's a struggle to get new fans to schlep to Harrison.
ESPN has kindly added attendance to their fixtures and results page. The Vancouver attendance looks shocking but it's higher than against San Jose on May 18 last year (a Friday night). Thanks for the good work. Fyi, it was very windy in New York on Saturday afternoon, sustained 20 mph winds according to weather underground, which put me off from attending.
Yeah it was cold, man. Makes it all the more infuriating the team won't play a single home match in the entire month of May when the weather starts to warms up.
I'm not sure you can quite call it a "crisis" when the average through four home games is less than 1,000 off the pace of what it was in 2018. 2018 (avg. 16,736) 03/10 - 18,374 (Timbers) 03/24 - 14,768 (Loons) 04/14 - 15,017 (Impact) 04/21 - 18,784 (Fire) ___________________________ 2019 (avg. 15,821) 03/16 - 15,621 (Quakes) 03/23 - 15,108 (Orlando) 04/06 - 15,706 (Loons) 04/27 - 16,848 (Cincy)
It's a continuation of the topic that shall not be mentioned in this thread. People act like NYRB announced attendance hasn't matched their actual attendance since they were in Giants Stadium.. The problem is, and always has been, since we have no actual attendance numbers to discuss and the "it looked like only <some number smaller than announced attendance>" discussions are a non-starter, there's no reason in bringing it up here..
Thanks for this data. I did not realize how close we are to last year's numbers. I really wasn't participating in a "looked like more/less on tv" discussion. I was under the impression that the announced numbers were down 20% or so. Crisis averted.
Ok...here are some numbers...Dave Martinez attended one of the NYCFC games last week and lamented on twitter about the low turnout...someone responded that he has a family member who works security at Yankee Stadium and suggested the two games each had around 14k actual people in attendance...our Saturday night game with decent weather had significantly fewer people at RBA...numbers can be deceiving...don't like crisis then maybe mini-crisis even compared to last year...NYCFC fans can characterize their situation as they wish... Hopefully the link below works... 1122888721639059457 is not a valid tweet id
MLB attendance is down again, and rebuilding teams are getting hit hard Well that makes sense since they're currently in first place and Union fans aren't used to that... they're probably going to NYRB games instead.
MLB "suffering" with "only" 31,000 fans x 81 games. To put that in perspective, it's more people per year than even the biggest college football teams who regularly pack in 100,000+ per game.
Boomer and Gio the morning drive time hosts on WFAN here had a long conversation yesterday on butts in seats at Citi Field in particular but also at other New York sports venues including Yankee Stadium and Met Life for the Jets and Giants…listened to a lot of it... No soccer obviously but the conclusion was that folks at games here is down across the board with multiple 2019 baseball crowds mirroring RBNY and NYCFC…they didn't of course mention the soccer teams but thought actual baseball crowds between 10k and 15k have been common even at Yankee Stadium… They decided it wasn't a big deal as long as the New York teams had sufficient revenue to build the teams…clearly gate receipts are more important in soccer but they didn't see 2019 as a New York attendance crisis…a peripheral issue for them at best...
anyone else think the US missing the world cup was a much bigger deal then maybe people realized especially with the casual sports fan? The sport didnt have the huge spike of visibility it gets every 4 yeas because of it and maybe people have somewhat forgotten about it.
Biggest crowd I have seen on TV at RBA in a long time. I am guessing it will be a sellout. Whatever that number is since they blocked off some sections. Makes you wonder if they could have sold those seats too if they hadn't blocked them off.
They did take down some of the blocked sections for this game, so no. How much of the Redbull Arena is tarpped off? At first I thought it was just upper deck on one side of the stadium (above the goal), but it looks like both sides of the stadium (above the goals). 7 to 8 sections on both sides. Even Zlatan couldn't sellout the stadium.
Someone had said they blocked off sections because they are preparing for some changes in the stadium. If that is true these sections would not have been opened even if demand called for it. I don't know if that is the case for sure.
