Not really. He has been neutered by Rafa. He was a much better attacker when Sigi demanded he bomb forward at every opportunity. That attitude carried over to his national team. Now he's just stuck in neutral. Neither good at defending or attacking.
I think he is a good defender. When tasked with only defending, he usually chases everyone to the other side. I have seen it many times where Aguero or Sanchez or whomever has had enough of him and heads over to the other side. 1v1, he is not that good. Almost nonexistent. Combining is ok if he gets the return ball and then crosses. If he gets the return and tries to 1v1, it goes sideways most often. So, he is not bad if you have other sources of creativity. He is not a winger. He is a serviceable right back. And he has a long throw in.
Totally disagree. Just compare him to Ritchie (sp?) on the left side. A converted left back who defends at least as well as Yedlin, but much better on attack.
I would, but who knows what Mike Ashley will do. I also don't know who will be available at what price.
You never know with Ashley. Supposedly the club is to be sold as soon as the league status is confirmed for next season, but.....
I never said Yedlin was good at defending. And he's good in attack, but of course there are others better than him. To put it another way: in the 0-9 scale, Yedlin is a 4 in defense and 6 in attack, the average modern fullback is about 6D/4A, Matt Ritchie is 4/7, and Manquillo is a 4/4. So Yedlin's position is safe, until they buy someone better on RB, which should not be one of their priorities since they have more need in other positions. And that does not mean he's a particularly good RB, either. He's just the bare minimum acceptable for a club with no great aspirations in the EPL playing a 5-4-1/3-4-3 where the wingbacks are expected to support the attack (assisting from time to time), but not to be the only ones providing width.
I guess we differ in how we rate his offensive contribution. I definitely do not rate him a 6 on that side of the ball.
I still doubt RB is first in the wish-list. But if they have enough left over after the important spots (like coach) I wouldn't be surprised.
and I was being glib here, but if Rafa does actually move on and/or the club is sold, who knows what they do. But assuming things stay stet my guess is DY replacement is not at top of the wish list unless he continues to cost late goals in an obvious manner.
Yedlin on the bench as NUFC hold on to beat Lester 1-0 off a Perez goal. Almiron still not on the board.
I'm not all that surprised. Big step up from MLS to the Premier League, and Almiron is a really inefficient finisher. He underperformed xG by 3.38 last season (6th-worst in the league), and he isn't going to get the same volume of chances with Newcastle that he did with Atlanta. I did think he'd have an assist or something by now though.
I am not all hyped up on Almiron, like most on here. Sure the guy looks good in MLS, but again it's the MLS. Rooney and Ibra still score a shit load of goals in this league. Almiron looks too slow and fragile for the EPL. I don't think he's gonna last too long or find too much success in the EPL. I won't be surprise if he moves on in a year or two, or forced to move.
So, how in the world did he get a 27 million dollar transfer that broke MLS and Newcastle's transfer records?
Almiron looks fine all things considered. I'm not sure many on these boards understand just how negative Rafa has the Toon setup. Everything is designed not to concede goals and to ultimately prevent relegation. Miggy is a speedy outlet for the inevitable long ball counter. Give him a full preseason and hopefully some new teammates before declaring him a bust.
I was listening to the Leicester Newcastle match on Sirium XM with local radio commentators. Their take on Almiron is that he needs to figure out when to chill a little bit as he just goes 100 mph every time he gets the ball. Needs to vary his game a bit.
Newcastle is only second to Sunderland in spending a lot of money on unfortunate buys. People need to understand that area of the world is one where you'd only live if grossly overpaid. It's gray, cold, depressing, and most of the industry that used to be there is now dead, so there are many unemployed people around. The Mags and the Black Cats have to pay through the nose to convince players to move there instead of going somewhere else.
Yes, kind of a cruel aspect that lower teams have to overpay for talent and then if in a not so great location, seems the premium goes up from there.
