That is weird. he's been in camp all winter. Why did we need to claim him off waivers? MLS rules ... who knows
I thought he was a homegrown? Even if he wasn't in the academy long enough, I have no clue why he'd be part of the waivers as he's been on our radar for a few years. (Brian Kleiban on the scuffed podcast said they tried to bring him in a few years ago, but he lived too far away for his parents to make the commute for him).
I guess either he lives too far away or wasn't in the academy long enough or something and so he had to clear waivers first. Once again the league shows favoritism to the Galaxy and makes them give up TAM money to sign a player already on their USL team....
So the waivers thing is basically a catch-all for players that don't fit any of the other mechanisms. He's not HG, he hasn't played in MLS (and thus had some other mechanism ascribed to him), he's not draft eligible, he's not discovery eligible, etc. In another time, he would have gone into a lottery.
I am so grateful that you keep track of the rules, and your readings have been spot on. And that means I don't even have to try anymore.
MLS’s next big step needs to be abolishing all these weird roster rules. I think we’re past the point in the league where every “good” player was going to immediately opt for New York or LA … there are a few laggards, but really there are a ton of competently run teams in all corners of the country that any good player offered a decent salary would be happy to play for. Maybe those teams don’t sign the Zlatan’s of the world, but I think that model is ending anyway.
Apparently we got the first pick to make sure no one else had an opportunity to draft/sign him. Hopefully that means DTK and GBS are high on him and think he can contribute now. If I remember correctly, his best position now is CB, but projects long term at right back. He'll probably be gone for U-20 World Cup.
The best on-field option might be to buy out Gio and sell JDS (assuming a league where he would get top dollar still had an open transfer window). With the $ from JDS and Ola's transfer fees, their three max salary budget charges + the TAM used to buy down Ola, we might have enough to sign two high earnings TAM players, plus a new third DP (assuming they paid the $6m buyout out of pocket). Probably could get an attacking midfielder, defensive midfielder, and a right center back, all of them starting quality, if they spent the money wisely.
I'd wait til summer to sell JDS if that's the case and only if we have a direct replacement lined up. If Lleget is healthy, he's going to be at the gold cup. If he's not healthy we definitely need to keep JDS around.
We are aware of the situation with Gio and the #LAGalaxy and have been working closely with him and his representation. We anticipate a resolution soon.— MLSPA (@MLSPA) March 1, 2019 If the Player's Union is involved, it likely won't be a buyout and it sure as heck won't be a pay cut.
I don't think that the union objects to a buyout. I can see them strongly objecting to a contract restructuring during a non-option year that involves a paycut. The implications for the vast majority of the players is huge as it subjects them to FO demands for cuts in their pay.
I was referring to the fact that there would be no reason for the union to be working through this with Gio and his agent if its was a full price buyout, except perhaps to make sure that it was truly full price. The union likely wouldn't have grounds to object.
This is like the anti-deadline day in Europe instead of being glued to the internet waiting to hear if your club got the paperwork through in time to sign player X, we’re waiting to see just how damaging Gio is going to be to the Galaxy and for how long.
I misunderstood. We are in agreement on that point. I can see the union objecting to any type of restructuring.
Miki Turner has heard from the MLSPU. Received a followup message from the @MLSPlayersUnion. If a contract restructuring did not comply w/CBA, they believe they have recourse through grievance process. However, as Tweet notes, they don't believe it will come to that and any deal will comply w/CBA. #MLS #LAGalaxy https://t.co/7rGyNDUAsZ— Miki Turner (@turneresq) March 1, 2019
Can't we just put him on the disabled list. He is competively disabled. I understand it's reserved for people like Milton Valenzuela from Columbus who tore his ACL in preseason and is out for the year, but him and Gio will but just as much effort on the field this season.
Here is the rough translation, from a FoxDeportes reporter
THey went with a buyout! .@LAGalaxy buy out final year of Dos Santos' contract, get down to 3 DPs https://t.co/l9gz3ZdU5G— Kevin Baxter 🇺🇦🏳️🌈 (@kbaxter11) March 1, 2019
So basically we wrote him a check but now he can't play anywhere else unless he has permission from MLS?
