Ole hinted that he might get minutes tomorrow. So I'd be surprised if he didn't see some time between the two.

Either way - Fred needs to show something next time he does get minutes. We can't keep 'giving' opportunities during the run in. I was pleased to see Andreas step up and show fight during the Liverpool game, I'd like for Fred to do the same.

Would be good for him to get another game and some time in a good xi. Hard for peripheral players to look good around a mixed bag.

He has shown flashes. He had a pass to Dalot hit him in stride maybe 50-60 yard ball that was pinged, not Rooney'd across the field. I feel like he ticks a lot of boxes in different matches, but hasn't really put together a performance yet. I'd like to see him get a run in the team in Ander's absence.

I finally watched the Palace game. After all the dire comments about Fred's play, I was pleasantly surprised. He was generally solid; he didn't really excel at any one thing, but he was active and rarely out of position. More games will only help him improve. Perhaps fatherhood has rearranged his position in the universe and he is readjusting.

Looking at what has gone wrong with Fred at United.

    https://www.skysports.com/football/...ed-is-still-a-mystery-to-the-clubs-supporters

Actually expecting him to really step up today. He'll be matched up against top notch oppo, but also like to believe that a continental pace (and physicality) might suit him better than what he experiences in the Prem.
With any luck, a solid performance today can kick start his season...

I think he was MOTM for us, he was calm creative and I did not see any giveaways. He was also disruptive for the other team.

Had a feeling that the European game would suit him and was very, very happy to see him respond and step up the way he has. There is hope for him yet and now, let's hope he can get going in the league as well (Imagine he'll probably be needed this weekend vs Arsenal).

He was impressive, I enjoyed his off the ball movement and quick passing. We need to continue to play him and get more from him. He has a lot to offer. He has multiple facets to his game that can be useful.

This was the first game where Fred actually looked like the guy we thought we were getting when we brought him in. Which is great and if he can keep it up it's one less piece we have to bring in this summer. But I don't see him taking Herrera's place when both are fit. Herrera just adds so much to that midfield and his work ethic can't be matched by Fred.

I've said it before, I think Herrera is a better 8 than 6. But, I think that the midfield as a whole is better with Herrera as the 6 and Fred as the other 8 than with Matic as the 6.

Fred has played in a double pivot before at Shaktar.

If he plays like he did against Arsenal we'll have no trouble against most teams if Ander plays to his standard and Pogba does as well.

Ander gets a hell of a lot of praise for his work rate, and quite right too. But it's his intelligence that is his biggest spike. He doesn't keep appearing at the crucial moment or making covering runs for Matic's turning circle simply because he runs a lot.

If we want to see more of him throughout a season, we should be taking the edge off the amount of work we're asking him to do by putting him at the base of a more mobile setup. More sides are moving towards having intelligence and dynamism in the 6 as opposed to auxiliary CBs. We should look to minimise our weaknesses in distribution, maximise our pressing intelligence and increase the amount of time we spend controlling the middle third of the pitch.

Yup. A mobile three with Jesse splitting Martial and Rashford/Lukaku can do work in the pressing game and on the counter. Matic's lack of pace not only hurts is defensively, but his slow movement and thought hurt us in buildup and counter attacks.

Anybody who wants to move Herrera from the 8 to the 6 needs to go re-watch his play under LvG as our deepest anchor when he was deployed there. He wanders far too often and leaves our center backs very exposed. He's NOT a 6. He has NEVER been a 6. He's a bloody ********ing brilliant 8. Let's let him be a bloody ********ing brilliant 8. Tinkerman no tinker!

Fred's improved form shows that maybe against bottom 8 clubs we could play those two staggered behind Paul; or when Ander needs a rest he can play in his stead.

Can we just appreciate the good thing in the position that the good thing has been doing its good work instead of trying to shove the good thing in a bad place to satisfy our own desires and notions?

Bring in a proper 6, like Rice, and play. Players. Where. They. Are. Supposed. To. Play. Alternatively, we can monitor Matic's minutes, use him more sparingly, and bide with what we have until Garner shows if he has the chops or not.

Also, of note, I think people should start to linger their mind towards the idea that a front three won't be our main formation. Ole is a striker who played his career in a 4-4-2. He likes a partnership between his strikers - and we are seeing Lukaku/Rashford forge a fine one. Not to say we won't use a front three at times, injuries and tactical adjustments could see us use one. But I really think we will see a return to a front two predominantly.

If the 4-4-2 is going to be a setup of choice, I've got no real issues with it as long as it's with a diamond mid 4 and not a flat one as we saw yesterday with Pogs being deployed wide left. I get the logic of Ole trying it yesterday, probably thinking that Pogba would get the better of Maitland-Niles, but it backfired spectacularly, with Pogs nowhere near the level we've seen him recently (left him very peripheral to the action as well).
A diamond mid or even a 4-2-2-2 setup would be something I can buy into, in addition of the 4-3-3 as prime options for us next season.

The more I think about it, and the more it is validated by being disagreed with by the right kind of people, the more we have to look to sign Ndombele and move Herrera back to the 6 role he excelled in before we signed Matic. This would also be following the trend of top sides turning previously more attacking midfielders into 6s (Wijnaldum, Fernandinho, potentially Ndombele though I think that will more likely occur later in his career).

Herrera was a 10 with some 8 to him. He learnt how to play as an 8 with time, struggling initially in that role for LVG (8, not 6), getting to grips with that role before his intelligence and application led to him nailing the 6 position under Mou.

We should return him to the 6 role he excelled in before we made the Matic mistake, we should continue to provide Fred with time as the less defensive of the two (as per his Shakhtar role) and we should look to Garner and McTominay to back Herrera up. Pogba, Ndombele, Fred, AP as the 8s. Matic to Inter or some shit, don't really care. Point is, we get a leader with good reading of the game and excellent defensive stats in the 6 role.
