I'm interested in starting a subscription to a soccer magazine for Christmas. I'd like one that primarily covers MLS (thus the posting in this forum), but I'd also like one that has a fair amount of USMNT, USWNT, Yanks Abroad and some European League (particularly the EPL and Bundesliga) coverage. Any recomendations? If I had to pick one magazine to subscribe to, what should it be?

    Your opinions are appreciated.

I've enjoyed 90:00 minutes over the last couple issues. Good interviews and some humor but if your looking for fast breaking news you'll find it on the 'net.

Some here do not care for it - but the magazine has improved a lot in the last 2 years and is generally pretty good reading. It is a bit expensive, however.

I've been a subscriber for 6 or 7 year snow and I am satisfied.

90:00 was alittle slow at the start but it has improved over the past few months/year. It's a worthy rag.

You're best bet is to subscribe to two. Soccer America for your american needs and 4-4-2, which is the footballing bible (but rarely does features specifically on American players).

90:00 has made my life worth living again. Check out there website at www.90soccer.com. They even have a section there where you can print a rant. The mag is a great rag that is going it in a way no other magazine ever has, at least not in THIS co0untry!

I'd agree. I suscribed for about two years back in the late 90's and thought it was very good. So if its improved from there it must be excellent now. I had to give it up because it did seem to be quite expensive.

If I could afford it though I would suscribe again in an instant.

I love 442 but i wouldn't recommend it. I like 442 because I love the coverage of lower division english football but the magazine is far too focused on england. World Soccer is more worldly in its view.

Soccer America and 90:00 are the best bets.

If you want MLS and American you have to go with Soccer America. I've had subscriptions on and off for the past two or three years. If you want the rest of the world go with World Soccer . I think 4-4-2 gets mired in the weeds of English Football and doesn't get out much. World Soccer gives you the big stories on every continent and some lower level stuff. Go to your local Barnes and Noble or Borders or local bookstore and look for them before you subscribe to see which is best for what you want.

I think 90:00 is still offering free trial subscriptions at their website. Check it out at www.90soccer.com. It's more like a soccer lifestyle magazine, which is pretty cool since all the other stuff you can get on the Net.

World Soccer and 90 Minutes are my picks. 442 is good but it is too Brit focused. They cover international soccer as well, but I think they cover way too much lower level English soccer. One advantage of 442 is that the subscription prices are inexpensive in comparison to World Soccer or Soccer America.

The stuff in World Soccer is so dated by the time I get it, that's why I like 90:00, it's more opinionated and feature based where the timeliness is not so critical. It's funny too, like an American 442, I suppose if you had to compare it to something we already know that has been out there for a wile.

I would have to say 90 Minutes is definitely the way to go. The articles are well written -- they cover everything from European soccer to world soccer to MLS to the Americans abroad. They also have several exclusive interviews and photo shoots. And, they aren't one of the US publications that sugar coat everything, they say it how it is -- calling teams and coaches out when they aren't doing their jobs and giving props when needed.

If you ain't gettin' it, you ain't "gettin" it. 90 Minutes is blazing a trail like nobody has in this country before. I don't care what their susbcription costs, put me down for a lifetime member! Go hard, or go home. I love it!

90 minutes sounds very interesting, from their website it looks very US oriented but not too much. What is their newsstand situation, can they be found in stores like Barnes and Nobles, Borders or pretty much just through subscription?

I'd reccomend 90 Minutes as well, though I like Soccer America as well. It's just that Soccer America seems kind of slapped together while 90 Minutes looks very proffessional and has some great photo's.

    What the hell?!

With all the changes in the league (new stadiums opening, expansion, the possible relocation of Kansas City) I thought about subscribing again to Soccer America to keep up with everything and Soccer America has always done a great job.

But hell, they want $79.00 for a year's subscription! I remember it being alittle expensive but not $7.00 an issue (once you take in to account tax.) I don't know of any magazine that you can buy off of a newstand that runs seven dollars an issue, typically a magazine will run $5.99. And when you subscribe they usually give you a break off of the price.

90 Minutes charges $29.00 for a year. Now thats more like it. I guess I will be subscribing to them.

Anyone have an idea why Soccer America would be so damned expensive? Its not even really a magazine, its more of a Sporting News type newspaper. I can't imagine it would cost that much to produce.

Soccer America publishes 24 issues per year for $79. In addition, you get over 100 e-newsletters per year.

    90 Minutes publishes 4 issues for $29

    Which is more expansive?

That's funny, I get a new issues of 90:00 every month. Most of Soccer America's content is college and youth....not worth my time.

I've had a subscription to Soccer America for a year and I won't be renewing. To me it's too dated (info is about a week to two behind), there are only usually 2 pieces of substance and then a bunch of filler/fluff like best MLS gifts to buy, the best soccer balls, jerseys, etc. that takes up 4-5 pages. I'm not trashing it, it's just not for me.

I haven't seen 90:00 Minutes but I'll have to check it out.

Then, there's supposed to be a new soccer mag coming out at the end of Feb. It's by Lang Whitaker which some of you will know from SI.com. Here's what he says from a topic from several months ago (August I think):

Here's the like to the topic for those that want to read more:

    https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127755&highlight=lang+whitaker

That might be worth waiting for.
