    ----------------------------------------

Terrible 1st qualifying round for Finland that lost all their 3 Europa League home games, while Iceland can be pretty happy about their performance with both a 3-0 home and away win, not to forget Valur Reykjavík beating Rosenborg in the CL qualifiers yesterday, which leads me to the performance by Norway, that has been rather disappointing, except for the excellent 4-0 away win by Sarpsborg 08 ... but at least not all is lost for the Norwegian teams that still have a good chance to turn it all around in the home leg..

While Malmö FF are doing great in the CL qualifiers, this EL 2nd Qualifying Round was quite a disaster for for Sweden, with all their 3 teams getting knocked out.

Pretty good results for the Danish teams with 3 away wins, while Norway got away with an away win and 2 draws ... and there is also still a good chance that Valur from iceland will manage to progress.

Molde (Nor) v Hibernian (Sco), 3-0 (agg: 3-0)
    1-0 Erling Braut Håland (35)
    2-0 Fredrik Aursnes (68)
    3-0 Erling Braut Håland (82)

FC Midtjylland and Rosenborg are ready for the Play-off's from the Champions path and will be joined by Malmö, while both Finland and Iceland unfortunately are out, just as the young FCN team that narrowly lost to Partizan Belgrade, mainly due to poor defending at corner kicks, but then FCN are the shortest team in the Superliga and this is their main weakness ...

But FCK and Brøndby are ready for the play-off's though Brøndby suffered a scare, getting their young centre back Joël Kabongo send off after only 11 minutes, so that they were one man down almost the entire game, and though they still managed a 2-1 win their other centre back Paulus Arajuuri also left the pitch injured, just as their German centre back Benedikt Röcker will be out for a while with a head injury, so the question is who they will be able to field in the play-off's...

The two Norwegian teams, Molde and not least Sarpsborg 08 keep impressing, though it was Danish Patrick Mortensen who scored the desicive goal and secured the win in the away match in Croatia ... Molde on the other hand had less of a problem getting past Hibernian from Scotland...

Europa League, Play-off Round, draw :

    Genk (Bel) v Brøndby (Den)
Atalanta (Ita) v FC København (Den)

    Sarpsborg 08 (Nor) v Maccabi Tel-Aviv (Isr)
    Zenit (Rus) v Molde (Nor)

We are going to get at least one Scandinavian team in the EL group stage, because Malmö and FCM are going to face eachother, but also Rosenborg and Sarpsborg 08 can be pretty happy about their play-off draw, the chance of qualifying for the groups stage look more bleak for Molde and not least for top seeded FCK, that have been highly unlucky with the draw by getting the unseeded Serie A team Atalanta ... Considering the many defensive injuries now piling up for Brøndby, they will also have a very difficult task getting past Genk from Belgium.

    1-0 Markus Rosenberg (12)
    2-0 Marcus Antonsson (25)
    2-1 Gustav Wikheim (60)
    2-2 Ayo Simon Okosun (77)
    Attendance: 11,487

Malmö FF came off to a great start in the first 45 minutes in the Nordic clash between last season Swedish and Danish Champions, though quite surprisingly taking the lead and scoring twice after two corner kicks which usually is a FCM speciality, where look highly strong, but not in the first half of this match, that was dominated by the home team, but as we also usually see in the Danish Superliga, the top teams let their opponents use up all their energy and then send in some top quality subs to finish them off in the last 30 minutes or so, when they have grown tired and can not do much from the bench, which is ecactly what happened to Malmö FF after FCM replaced Paul Onuachu in the 64h minute with Simon Okosun to add some more quality to the attack aganst some very tired looking Malmö players.

    Highlights:

Rosenborg (Nor) v Shkendija (Mac), 3-1
    1-0 Issam Jebali (11)
    2-0 Nicklas Bendtner (15)
    3-0 Jonathan Levi (44)
    3-1 Stênio Júnior (76)

    Europa League, Play-off Round, 1st leg :

Genk (Bel) v Brøndby (Den), 5-2
    1-0 Mbwana Samatta (37)
    2-0 Leandro Trossard (pen. 45)
    2-1 Hjörtur Hermannsson (47)
    2-2 Kamil Wilczek (51)
    3-2 Mbwana Samatta (55)
    4-2 Mbwana Samatta (70)
    5-2 Leandro Trossard (90+1)
    Attendance: 12,110

A terrible start for Brøndby in the first 45 minutes, though playing rather well, but with an off-side goal securing a 1-0 lead to Genk and then a rather cheap ball-to-hand penalty in the 44th minute, so 2-0 at half-time which seem quite misfortunate ... but Brøndby was able to strike back and made it 2-2 within the first 6 minutes of the 2nd half and though Genk took the lead once more a few minutes later, it was still looking pretty good for Brøndby, until they suddenly made some terrible clown defending, giving away the ball to a Genk player right outside the box... and then a goal in 1 minute injury-time,to make it look even worse ... so very bad luck for Brøndby in this match and an almost impossible task turning this around in the return leg, inspite of having scored two away goals..

Europa League, (Champions Path) Play-off Round, 2nd leg :

FC Midtjylland (Den) v Malmö FF (Swe), 0-2 (agg: 2-4)
    0-1 Marcus Antonsson (32)
    0-2 Markus Rosenberg (79)

Shkendija (Mac) v Rosenborg (Nor), 0-2 (agg: 1-5)
Besart Ibraimi, Shkëndija miss penalty (20)
Izair Emini, Shkëndija miss penalty (48)
    0-1 Even Hovland (67)
    0-2 Tore Reginiussen (84)

Malmö FF surprisingly managed a 2-0 away win against FC Midtjylland, in a match where FCM very much lacked efficiency, while Malmö on the other hand were very sharp an on target, not missing their few opportunites and so Malmö progreess to the group stage, while FCM once again is a disappointment in Europe and missed the opportunity ... or perhaps I should rather say that they have sold the opportunity to reach a group stage, considering all the players they have sold since they won the Danish championship... last season they sold around €16 million worth of players and in this summer transfer window they have sold their highly talented centre back Bubacarr Sanneh to Anderlecht for €8 million, left back Andreas Poulsen to Borussia Mönchengladbach for €4.5 million, attacking midfielder/striker Dominick Drexler to Köln for €4 million and left winger Mikkel Duelund to Dynamo Kiev for €3.5 million, besides a few other minor sales, so they have sold players for more than €20 million this summer, not to forget that Rafael van der Vaart also left the club, so perhaps FCM need to focus on selling less players if they want to do well in Europe....

Just as expected Rosenborg managed to eliminate their opponents from Macedonia also beating them in the away leg, though the Macedonians could have been two goals up early in the 2nd half, had they not missed the two penalties they were awarded.

    Europa League, Play-off Round, 2nd leg :

Brøndby (Den) v Genk (Bel), 2-4 (agg: 4-9)
    0-1 Ruslan Malinovskiy (15)
    0-2 Dieumerci Ndongala (33)
    1-2 Kamil Wilczek (34)
    2-2 Johan Larsson (58)
    2-3 Sebastien Dewaest (66)
    2-4 Mbwana Samatta (87)
    Attendance: 8,636

Yet another terrible start for Brøndby in the first 45 minutes, though playing rather well and creating lots of good opportunities, but again Genk where way more effcient though also taking a 2-0 lead due to yet another off-side goal, just as in the first leg, but the new Brøndby keeper and the defense did not look all to good in this match either, they simply look too slow for the highly attacking minded Brøndby style of play and this is obviously going to get punished at this level when playing in Europe ... but a highly entertaining mach never the less, just as the first leg, so here are some highlights .

FC København (Den) v Atalanta (Ita), 0-0 AET, Pen. 4-3 (agg: 0-0, FCK win 4-3 on penalties)

    penalty shoot-out :
    0–1 Marten De Roon
    1-1 Pieros Sotiriou
    1–2 Ali Adnan
    2-2 Ján Gregus
    Alejandro Gomez, Atalanta miss penalty
    3-2 Robert Skov
    3–3 Andrea Masiello
    Dame N'Doye, FCK miss penalty
    Andreas Cornelius, Atalanta miss penalty
    4–3 Denis Vavro
    Attendance: 18,378

While FCN and FCM have been selling too many of their best players and Brøndby seem too defensively weak for Europe, you can't blame FCK for this kind of weaknesses this season, proven by the result against a very strong looking Atalanta that is undefeated in Europe (trashing Sarejevo 8-0 away and easilly beating Hapoel Haifa both home and away) just as being undefeated in the Italian Serie A so far this season, even resting players and fielding lots of their reserves in the 3-3 away match against Roma a few days ago, so that they wuold be in top shape for this play-off against FCK. But never the less FCK managed to get past the strong looking Italian side, Ironically with former FCK striker Andreas Cornelius missing a decisive penalty for Atalanta in the penalty shoot-out, though it has to be said that it was a brilliant save by the FCK keeper and not really due to poor finishing by Cornelius, as you can also see in the 10 minutes extensive highlights below :

    Maccabi Tel-Aviv (Isr) v Sarpsborg 08 (Nor), 2-1 (agg: 3-4)
    1-0 Omer Atzili (Pen. 52)
    2-0 Eliran Atar (60)
2-1 Ole Jørgen Halvorsen (Pen. 81)

Molde (Nor) v Zenit (Rus), 2-1 (agg: 3-4)
    0-1 Daler Kuzyaev (21)
    1-1 Eirik Hestad (65)
    2-1 Erling Braut Håland (77)

Europa League, Group Stage draw :

    Group B.
    FC Salzburg (Aut)
    Celtic (Sco)
    RB Leipzig (Ger)
    Rosenborg BK (Nor)

Considering that Rosenborg were in the in pot 4, they got a fairly easy draw with Salzburg probably being the weakest teams among the top seeded, while they should also be fairly happy with getting Celtic from pot 2 .. Leipzig on the other hand was probably among the 3 best teams from pot 3, so Rosenborg still need a bit of luck to progress from this group B.

    Group C.
    Zenit (Rus)
    FC København (Den)
    Bordeaux (Fra)
    Slavia Prague (Cze)

FCK were seeded to be in pot 2 and though they can be fairly happy with getting Zenit that were among the top seeded but have not looked all too impressive in the EL qualifiers, Bordeaux and Slavia Prague were among the better teams from pot 3 and 4 ... so not an easy draw for FCK, but when they are able to eliminate Atalanta, they should also be able to progress from this group with a bit of luck.

    Group I.
    Besiktas (Tur)
    Genk (Bel)
    Malmö FF (Swe)
    Sarpsborg 08 (Nor)

Both Malmö and Sarpsborg can be very happy about this draw considering the top 4 league teams they could have drawn, but considering how strong Besiktas is at home and how efficient Genk has looked this far this season, not least against Brøndby in the play-off's, it will still be a highly difficult task to progress from this group.

Stranger things have happened, but it'll nice to see Chelsea play in the cold.
