Re: Article from Hannover paper - Mathis gone in four days, 95% to Real Salt Lake Cit If and when he does leave Germany/Europe, at least he want be in the Yanks Abroad section anymore. Also, the jokes about the South are a bit much, unless of course you are from there. In fact, back in the mid 70s I even spent some quality time in Conyers when my Father was working there.
I just wonder if this issue has anything to do with the "major" Kansas City announcement scheduled for later today.
Open plea to whomever plays Salt Lake on their opening day (assuming Mathis plays for the Club of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints): When Mathis is introduced, will all of the home supporters stand up, grab their crotches and point at their watches? Thanks.
Hey, "I told you so crowd": Guess what, the point was so obvious and your collective style so offputting, that many folks didn't feel the need to engage on the subject. Of course, grabbing your crotch, pointing to your watch, showing up your manager and generally making a spectacle of yourself is tantamount to professional suicide. Claiming intellectual superiority based on this assertion is hubristic. I get the impression some of you would trot out your medals and ribbons from the Retard Math and Spelling Bee without any sense of shame.
I think the opposing fans will be doing the pointing and grabbing. === By the way, I just got a Hannover 96 shirt, Mathis 15 - signed by the whole team. I think this might have to go on Ebay
But that's not a story I've been close to, have you? There are plenty of sad stories in soccer in general. Hell, guys have dropped dead on the pitch. But having seen him play every other week from my seat in section 133 in Giants stadium, and literally watch his talent explode, and then, having apparently ended his Euro career like this, well, it's sad and close to home.
It must be lonely at the top, knowing you're right all of the time, and others are wrong. Well, look, it was a bad idea to do that. If people said otherwise, they shouldn't have. Still, coaches have been shown up worse than that and the player finds his way back on the pitch nevertheless. If Hannover was losing, and not scoring goals, I'm not entirely certain that Clint wouldn't have made it back. Now, however, Lienen can show everyone who's boss without, apparently, sacrificing the fortunes of the team. At any rate, as the last of the official Clint Mathis apologists, let me say that he has fvcked himself big time. He's not young anymore. This was his chance to become a super star. Sorry, Clint, you blew it.
Not gonna happen my friend. Landon's an upstanding young man who will, on the field at least, fit right in. I thought it was odd he went to Germany in the first place- he's a non-conformist- and an American soccer player- going to conformist Germany. Anyone could see potential problems there. As for whether he's stupid and evil and all, I say there's enough role models for the kiddies- us beer drinkers need a role model!
I hope this isn't true. I was also, for the longest time, a Mathis apologist. He is a great talent, but let's face it...a bit of a putz too. I'd just hate to think that he has burned all of his bridges to a European club Anyway, has anyone considered that his agent is saying that Mathis is almost definitely coming to RSL to perhaps get 1860 or another club to bid more for his services? Just a thought...
Re: Article from Hannover paper - Mathis gone in four days, 95% to Real Salt Lake Cit Am I the only one who's slightly skeptical that MLS, who received nothing when Mathis left on a free, is now going to pay Hannover to transfer Mathis back here? I just have to wonder what good that really does for the league, at least financially.
Why didn't they have that when I was in school? I could never win the regular contests. Sheesh, kids these days get all the breaks.
Personally, I'm an Eddie Johnson apologist. We all need one player to go gaga over. But Clint was a damn fine choice, sir. That run vs. Dallas, the goal against Korea, the left foot/right foot/head hat trick. Ah, that was the life.
Re: Article from Hannover paper - Mathis gone in four days, 95% to Real Salt Lake Cit If Hannover have decided Mathis is useless, and they can't cut him, and no team is willing to pay a transfer fee...they'll let him go for free just to save the money. That's what happened with Kirovski last season, whom B'ham let go in January rather than June. And JoKi was closer to playing a role for City than Mathis, apparently, is for Hannover. Might happen again with Stern John.
The problem with Clint is that his best quality doesn't fit with the rest of his game. Meaning, his coolness and awareness in and around the box is unrivaled in American players. But he plays the rest of the game like a midfielder, and then disappears too much to actually be a midfielder. Read: 'luxury player'. Combine that with a personal problem with the coach, and this one isn't too hard to figure out. I don't think the 'gesture' was the cause of his troubles with Lienen, more like a symptom of them.
I wonder how MLS will market him. Can they present him as an icon for outspoken red neck Americans who are disliked by euros? Certainly they won't market him as a failure and a putz. Or maybe they will? Which way will sell more tickets and attract more viewers?
Re: Article from Hannover paper - Mathis gone in four days, 95% to Real Salt Lake Cit I just dont see that here. If you're going to make comments that a player is possibly going to a certain club/league... you don't start off by naming the one that has the smallest buying power. MLS can't outbid most European teams at this stage of the game.
For all Mathis' talent, he has a horrible attitude. I do like is alofness (sp) and cockiness, though. I will also cheer when he does well for country (and any non US club that ), but I will critisize him when he behaves like an ass. What he did when he pointed to his wrist was behave like an ass.
Not to bust your balls but I kinda get tired of everyone calling him such a redneck. If it's because he's from Georgia that's ridiculous. I live (KY) in one of the most redneck, yuppy places in the world and I'm hardly considered red. To me Mathis behavior is no different than most of MLB,NFL,NBA, or NHL players. We are just used to seeing soccer players in this country as wholesome, all-american types. As much as I don't like to admitt it's kinda good to see some stand out (other than playing wise) in american soccer. It kinda hits reality that our soccer stars are like most other athletes in this country. However, Mathis has only himself to blame and I pray his experiences are a wake up call.
