I actually can not think of any non Argentine that LOVES him (though there might be a few). I do know a whole world of people, however, that truly respect him for his amazing style on the pitch,
BUT...he wines, dives, cries...his drug use and other health issues and arrogant antipatico interviews just make people hate his guts, without losing respect for his playing quality. I am one of them. So I dare say that you are wrong about this. There is a country that worships him, a fan base in Europe that adore him (Napoli supporters-old ones anyway) but that is as far as I think it goes regarding the love. People pretty much hate him, yet recognize him as being one of the top 3 footy players of all times.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Robbie Savage. Though I don't hate him at all and take him on my team in a second, doesn't have have the rep of being a prick? I hate Carlos Ruiz more then any person on earth.

How dare he use drugs! Ooooo I hate him, no one uses drugs!

And I think his honesty is often confused with arrogance. He is an outcast because he dares to go against the grain. He criticizes Pele for selling out his image to big corporations and not giving back to the poor where he came from, he criticizes the US for being imperialists so in return he gets branded as an a-hole.

But he's never been a d*ck to the fans, which is exactly why he's so loved in Argentina.

 

I dont think he hates him BECAUSE he used drugs rather that he literally threw his career away because of his drug use. To me thats a terrible thing to do to yourself let alone your fans......I like Maradona as much as the next guy and he definetly ranks as one of the best EVER but simply put.....he threw it all away

Well if your Totti you could probably get any chick you wanted....i still read in a FourFourTwo a while back that most Italians outside of Rome regarded him as kinda dumb. Yes his girlfriend is a hottie though

 

All I know is Cantona has got to be one of the smartest.....maybe he should be on the most loved list.
