Josh Sargent has met SC Soft Flensburg once before. The end of August was when Werders U23 played in the Regionalliga 1: 1 against the league rivals. Will the Sturmtalent now also have a chance when the Bremen pros compete against Flensburg in the second DFB Cup round on Wednesday evening? Coach Florian Kohfeldt kept his head down on Tuesday: "Let's see."

The assumption that Sargent could soon stand for the first time in a competitive match in the squad of professionals, had come up last weekend. After the Americans had always been there in the competitive games of the U23, he was absent on Saturday in a 5-2 victory against VfL Oldenburg and trained instead in the pros. "For a long time, he did not have a competition, he could not play any competitive games for the first half of the year, because he did not have a player's license yet. He should therefore first get a rhythm and deny a lot of games, "said Kohfeldt the approach.

In the meantime, this first phase has been completed. The 18-year-old has received enough playing practice and can now offer himself to the professionals. "He's fighting for squad places with us now," Kohfeldt said. "On Sunday it was not enough for the Leverkusen game. Accordingly, he continues to train with us. If he does not play for two or three weeks, he will play again in the U23 to get match practice. "

That the striker, who had played five A-caps for the USA at his young age and scored several test matches for the Werder professionals, had great quality, was seen in training, Kohfeldt stressed. "But he has to prevail against well-known competitors." To clear a cadence for Sargent, would indeed be deleted an established offensive player. Most recently against Leverkusen were the offensive people Max Kruse, Yuya Osako, Claudio Pizarro, Milot Rashica, Florian Kainz, Martin Harnik and Johannes Eggestein in the squad.

Translation: I'm not going to play Sargent before the winter break and stop asking me questions about him.

This isn't Leon Goretzka and Thomas Mueller on the bench ahead of our boy. It's a 40 year old and Johannes Eggestein. It's ridiculous that he is not splitting time with that class of player with his goal scoring record and after being in Bremen since January.

Eggestein has 2 goals in 45 minutes. Pizarro has a goal and 2 assists in 255 minutes. They're getting goals and Werder is doing well.

They are professionals who signed 1st team contracts with WB.

By your logic, how could they possibly be dropped to the reserves?

Eggestein has spent so much time glued to Werder's bench he probably could use some reserve team matches to keep his fitness up. Pizzaro is so old he will never be more than a situational sub this year.

What is the logic in Josh spending a year in Bremen picking up cones and playing 4th division matches? He could have done that in MLS at 16. Now he is looking at the very real possibility of being past his 19th birthday before he gets a run of meaningful competitive matches with his club. That is simply unacceptable for an international class player.

You are going to count Eggestein's cup goal against Wormatia Worms? No doubt it was a banger in that 6-1 victory for Werder. But if you count that I will count Sargent's 6 goals for Werder II and his international strike. Statistically Josh is far ahead of his competition. At a minimum he should be getting some bench appearances. That's all. Is the manager really afraid Sargent might score in the Bundesliga? It sure appears that way.

He has 1 in 19 Bundesliga minutes then, and 1 in 26 minutes against teams at Sargent's level.

He's done well this year, but please show your work on this claim.

Sargent may be getting closer to first team minutes.
Coach says they have been letting him find his rhythm with the U-23's and that he is in "prominent competition" for a place in the attack and the opportunity is there now.

where are your Eggestein numbers coming from? He had 2 against Schalke, and has 4 BL goals this season according to espn, in a lot more than 45 minutes.

    Sargent:
6 goals in 10 matches with Werder II
    3 friendly goals with Werder
    2 full international goals
That's 11 goals right there. All but 2 in the last 2+ months. That is an extraordinary strike rate for a forward. Let alone an 18 year old in his first competitive matches against adults.

    Johannes Eggestein:
In 2+ years as a pro he has
3 goals with Werder II in 31 matches (!)
1 goal with Werder in the Bundesliga
    1 cup goal with Werder

I might be off a goal here or there but that is the gist of the situation.

There are two Eggesteins. Brothers. One is a star of the team and the other is an under performing former German youth international that Sargent is in direct competition with for playing time.

LOL. Easy question. If Josh bags a couple garbage time Bundesliga goals it makes it much harder for the manager to spin Josh not playing as "he's a young player still fighting for a place." Now doesn't it?

Why do you think the manager’s goal is to keep Josh out of the team?

Two of the Werder following media accounts on twitter say he is not in the squad for tonight.

He hadn't planned on Josh blowing up, has plenty of forwards and doesn't want to deal with the issue at all. Also, it's pretty much a make or break year for Eggestein. The manager is going to give him every opportunity to succeed. At the expense of our boy, it seems.

This, there is very little chance he gets a fair chance to unseat a young german player that had high potential.

I won't entertain any conspiracies, but the idea of a manager playing a 40 year old striker over an 18 year old (and leaving him out altogether) against a 5th division opponent is absurd to me.

What better time to throw him out in a competitive game with the first team? This is literally going to be the easiest match they play all year. I have a feeling the manager is making him "work for it" and they want to "protect" him but at what point does that become counter productive when you're not even letting him on the bench against a 5th division opponent?

He does not need to be sheltered. He's scored goals for the national team, he's played in a u20 World Cup as a 17 year old.. I don't understand the why or what behind the decision to let him travel but not even let him in the 18. Unless he has been absolutely awful in training, but that's something that I can only speculate on. I've only seen him scoring goals just about every game he plays, whether it be in friendlies with the nats or first team, or with Werder Bremen II. Disappointing.
