What about George Acosta, Taylor Booth, or Sebastian Soto? Those are the best players in this cycle outside of Sargent, Carleton, and Weah
I think the point is that Sargent's showing probably got him closer to the first team at WB. The coach said as much. Amon is on a team that will probably look to sell him next Summer and they might see it as more important to be showcased in Florida than play in Denmark. Especially, if they can get him on the U20 team. Weah is clearly not in the first team plans for the next month and could use game time. But I agree, he is probably a starter for the USMNT at his time but they don't have any games the first week of November.
https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...yer-roster-for-2018-concacaf-u20-championship GOALKEEPERS (2): 1-Brady Scott (FC Koln/GER; Petaluma, Calif.), 12-CJ Dos Santos (S.L Benfica/POR; Philadelphia, Pa.) DEFENDERS (7): 2-Jaylin Lindsey (Sporting KC; Charlotte, N.C.), 3-Chris Gloster (Hannover 96/GER; South Orange, N.J.), 4-Mark McKenzie (Philadelphia Union; Bear, Del.), 5-Matthew Real (Philadelphia Union; Drexel Hill, Pa.), 14-Manny Perez (N.C. State; Garner, N.C.), 16-Julian Araujo (LA Galaxy; Lompac, Calif.), 19-Sam Rogers (Seattle Sounders FC; Seattle, Wash.) MIDFIELDERS (6): 6-Brandon Servania (FC Dallas; Birmingham, Ala.), 7-Juan Pablo Torres (K.S.C. Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen/BEL; Lilburn, Ga.), 8-Alex Mendez (SC Frieburg/GER; Los Angeles, Calif.), 10-Paxton Pomykal (FC Dallas; Highland Village, Tex.), 15-Anthony Fontana (Philadelphia Union; Newark, Del.), 18-Isaac Angking (New England Revolution; Providence, R.I.) FORWARDS (5): 9-Justin Rennicks (Indiana Univ.; Hamilton, Mass.), 11-Ulysses Llanez (Unattached; Lynwood, Calif.), 13-Griffin Dorsey (Indiana Univ.; Evergreen, Colo.), 17-Ayo Akinola (Toronto FC/CAN; Detroit, Mich.), 20-Frankie Amaya (UCLA; Santa Ana, Calif.)
First reaction: Where is Soto? Akinola better have his shooting boots on. The rest is mostly what Bshredder has been telling us. I like our keeper and defense situation. The rest is very iffy. First choice lineup from this group IMO Scott Lindsey-Araujo-McKenzie-Gloster Servania Angking-Mendez Pomykal-Akinola-Llanez
I really don't understand not getting Soto. Gloster is already playing for Hannover II, surely he's less expendable? We'll need a reliable source of goals. Seems like a B team, but I'm excited to see some of these guys play. Still should be enough to roll lower CONCACAF opposition. I'm sure the Indiana guys will be gone after the first changeover since they'll be needed for the NCAA tournament. The press release spelled Freiburg wrong.
U20 tracker updated through qualifying: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lfMvt087D65kHEJtitNuODh4dPgpKCQTi6Ae9VJ2c0g/edit?usp=sharing I assume this will grow if/as the U.S. advances to the next round and some replacements are made. Some observations: Nobody got 6 (all 5 camps and qualifying) callups. Two guys (Araujo and Angking) leapfrogged the pool and got into qualifying without any previous callups this cycle. Two guys are currently playing up (Araujo and Llanez) though two others (Booth and Ochoa) have also been in the mix as '01s. Four college players. If Rennicks and Dorsey deliver, Ramos arguably deserves substantial kudos for keeping a couple of amateur guys plugged into the squad knowing he might not get all his pro guys. Brewer is the only guy with 5 callups (Perez, Pomykal, Rennicks, Rogers) this cycle not to make the roster. Carleton, a possible midtournament add, is the lone "4." As for the "3s" -- Cappis Christian Goslin Chris Jimenez Andres Ledezma Richie Stanley Aedan Uribe Angel Are the pro contracts for Mendez and Llanez official?
That's the glass half empty look. The glass half full says there are young, unproven players but this tournament may be a springboard for some of them. The roster shows Mendez already with Freiburg. I hadn't seen his signing announced.
First impressions: That forward group leaves a lot to be desired, the goalkeeping and backline looks solid and midfield should be ok despite missing some key people.
One more detail: Eleven of the 20 were at the first camp of the cycle. Only 4 of the 20 (Akinola, Angking, Araujo, Gloster) hadn't been called in by the second one.
I find it interesting that Matthew Real has a first XI number and that it's a number generally reserved for centerbacks. Does Tab plan on pairing Real with McKenzie in central defense I wonder? Has Real ever played centerback?
Real does not seem like someone who would be good at CB and to my knowledge he has never played there as a pro. The options are McKenzie, Rogers, and Araujo.
Maybe Im reading too much into the numbers they were assigned. On paper Rogers seems like the obvious canidate to pair with McKenzie, but you just never know with Tab. He's certainly had people play out of position before, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
So raise your hand if you thought you'd see a US U20 roster with as many players from the academy of the New England Revolution on it as there are from FC Dallas... and more than either New York Red Bulls or Sporting Kansas City. By my count, here's the academy breakdown: PHILADELPHIA UNION: 4 - *Dos Santos, Fontana, McKenzie, Real, LA GALAXY: 3 - ^Araujo, **Llanez, *Mendez FC DALLAS: 2 - Pomykal, Servania NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION: 2 - Angking, ^^Rennicks NEW YORK RED BULLS: 1 - *Gloster SEATTLE SOUNDERS: 1 - Rogers (USL) SPORTING KANSAS CITY: 1 - Lindsey TORONTO: 1 - Akinola *Signed a pro deal elsewhere **No longer part of that organization ^Unsigned but still part of that academy ^^Current NCAA player The other five players - Amaya, Dorsey, Perez, Scott, Torres - weren't part of MLS academies. Torres flirted with Atlanta but apparently never joined. Scott (SJ), Dorsey (COL) and Amaya (LAG) were in MLS academy territory but stuck with their original USSDA program. Perez (Raleigh) didn't grow up in MLS territory. Of the 20 players, Perez and Lindsey (both NC) and Servania (AL) are the only players who didn't grow up in an MLS academy. Not a lot of scouting being done outside those MLS territories, apparently.
Im sorry to be negative but this is a very dissappointing roster. Sargent and Weah I can understand because they are already first team players. But what is the reason for no Acosta, Booth, Ferri, Soto? They are playing U-19 matches which are meaningless. When you also add Carleton, Durkin, and Sands missing, this is clearly a C Team. And Akinola again? What can we learn from him again other than him being a really good athlete? This roster will struggle to qualify Im sorry to say
The classification of the first phase is practically safe, but I am really disappointed with this list. I'm surprised it was not called Booth or Sands. I still do not understand what role Torres plays, the times I saw him play never caught my attention. The forwards leave something to be desired, is Griffin Dorsey or Justin Rennicks really better than Hundley? Because Hundley never received a call to this cycle? The numbers speak for themselves. Carleton heats the bench for ATLU and is not released? surprising. The same is the case of Weah, is not part of the 18 in PSG and is not released? I hope to see him play this month in the first team then. Akinola I've seen him in a bad physical condition, I hope he does not play against him.
Sargent is a first team player in name only because of his contract. He's playing 4th division matches and friendlies. I would have liked to see him lead this U20 group. Despite the recent positive chatter from the Werder manager it seems pretty clear he's not in Werder's plans before the winter break at the earliest. There is absolutely no reason for him to miss call ups right now.
Can you give me a detailed breakdown of T&T, Honduras, and Costa Rica’s rosters that make you feel that way?
I don't understand this. I am with @ussoccer97531 on this one … McKenzie is getting released, but not Durkin, Carleton and Richards????!!!! What the hell? I am actually as surprised that McKenzie is being released as I am that the others were not. Truly bizarre to me.
The answer is simple: every club around the world is different with how they deal with releasing players for YNT duty The Union are big on having their players rep US youth national teams. They’re proud of how so many of their players have played on the U-20 team the last 2 cycles. Not to mention, this team is thin in central defense and Tab needs McKenzie. Tab worked with Philly to come to an agreement to make it happen McKenzie is in a bind with this situation but both the US and Philly are going to try to make it work. I understand he’s going to float between both teams Kudos to Philly. I think US fans should appreciate what that club is doing for Mark, Tab, US Soccer, and the U-20 team (and its fans) to make it happen. They are under no obligation to do so
