“I’ve been training with the first team every day at Bremen and a lot of the older players have helped me,” Sargent continued. “Claudio [Pizarro] is a guy in front of me who has been a good mentor towards me, he and the rest of the guys are helping me anyway they can. I think they are doing a good job but I’m also the guy trying to win a spot so it’s good competition as well.”

But I thought Pizarro was bad our for boy :whistling:

I’m pretty sure it was previously discussed about how Pizarro was partially brought there to provide mentorship to Sargent and Eggestien. I don’t think too many thought that was terrible situation. But sure a couple could eat some crow I guess.

No one said anything bad about Pizzaro. It's just that based on who Werder Bremen have played (and their performances), Sargent should be making the bench for some Bundesliga games.

Bad only in the sense it's another player he has to compete with for playing time. Doesn't mean he can't be a good mentor to Sargent.

According to Kicker on October 11th:

"Actually, Sargent was supposed to play in the USA U20 games, but with close talks with Werder the USA Federation did not call him up. A detail that indicates: Even if the 18 year old has not had a big role in the Bundesliga so far, his development at the Weser is a big focus.

Florian Kohfeldt, Werder Trainer, still does not like to talk in details about Sargent's development. But, it is clear that plan is bearing the first fruits. Sargent, who trains regularly with the first team and plays with the U23s, has unmistakenly improved. With seven games he was only goalless 2 games and has a total of 5 goals.

A bottom line which speaks for itself. Without Sargent Bremens 2nd team surprisingly lost 1:3 against Jeddeloh. At the time, the US-Boy was playing a test game with the full team against 3rd Division SV Meppen and played 90 minutes by Pizarro and got his name on the goal scorer list.

By playing together with Pizarro Kohfeldt can gain a special educational effect. A sign which is clear to the trainer: The individual development of the Talent is more important than the U23 results and a possible re-appearance of Sargent with them. Are there indications that Sargents full team appearance was, in Kohfeldts eyes, that the teenager has crept closer to the first team level (where in the late summer training he was a not yet there)? Probably yes.

But Kohfeldt stresses 'there is still no statement about Josh's development level'. And then, 'in the spirit that we all want the absolute most out of him, we are just keep the ball flat' (my comment: they are just letting things happen and keeping expectations low, not putting too much pressure on Josh). Or, said another way, the coach certainly could sing the boys praises if he wanted to. A bit more relaxed, Kohfeldt stated: 'Everyone can see what qualities Josh has - me too'. His perspective of the 1.80 meter tall man (my comment: hahahah I'd swear he was 1.90!!) is clear: 'His home team is the pros, that is his home'. It only seems a matter of time until Josh will play for this "home" team."

Well, I cannot seem to edit the post above. But, I realized this is old news, the article was from Sep 11, not Oct 11! Sorry about that.

Circle Halloween on your calendar then. Werder plays SC Weiche Flensburg 08, who are two places above Werder II in the Regionalliga Nord, in the next round of that tournament.

Sargent scored against them in a league match in late August.

It really seems Germany is the ideal league for our guys. But it's always been that way right, even from the late 80's and early 90's; we had our boys there?

Wynalda, McBride, Moore come to mind in the early/mid 90's. They really seemed to have gotten a fair chance there unlike in other leagues (of the time period).

    Promise of a pro debut?

"The phase in which he plays completely in the U23 and is always there firmly, is over for him soon," said Werder coach Florian Kohfeldt on Wednesday.

After his return from the national team, the U23 will have to make do without Sargent on Friday night, when the important game at VfB Lübeck is pending in the Regionalliga Nord at 19.30. If the pros test in Lohne on Tuesday against the second division side Arminia Bielefeld, but Sargent will definitely be there, said Kohfeldt. The 18-year-old Sturmtalent completed so far ten regional league games for Werder U23 this season. He scored six goals and two assists.

For which games should Sargent have been on the bench and who should have been left out of the 18-man roster instead?

Eggstein(?), for whatever matches he made the bench for or got minutes.

What could help Sargent getting the call is that Martin Harnik seems to be out again this coming weekend (torn muscle fiber) and Fin Bartels recovery is progressing much slower than initially projected. Bartels is unlikely to be back this year even.

1 goal. Otherwise he's a guy that could barely score in 3rd tier of German football. Pizarro is another one. He has scored 2 goals over the last 3 seasons in league play.

You have a significant lack of context knowledge there. But if you prefer a coaching approach that fields players exclusively based on past glory, you have a point.

Kicker has Sargent on the bench against Schalke this weekend. Only preliminary, but still.. ever so much closer to a debut.

He'll get his chance eventually. I hope that when he finally does, he'll take the bull by the horns and really make the most of it the way Pulisic and McKennie did. It really is remarkable to me how quickly those guys, when they were given their chance, played their way into the first team and then played their way into the starting eleven.

What is the context I'm missing. Sargent couldn't make a couple to of gamedays, reasonably instead of those two. That is what I'm suggesting.
