https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_cup Why dont we have a Super Cup for the MLS? Have this match before the season against previous season MLS cup champions vs MLS Supporter Shiled winner? Have bragging rights for the year with the forst trophy of the season? Thoughts on this, rather than the Campeones Cup [emoji849]
Please read the link, before posting a response [emoji52]. We need something like this before the season starts, it could be at a neutral spot or 2 game home and away fixtures.
Ok, so this year it would have worked out (I think you missed the joke on toronto vs toronto) But we do have 2 National Cup Champions each year. One American and One Canadian. So do we discriminate against our little step brother like usual? What National Cup champion does the MLS League Champion play?
I would vote no. Personally I look forward to the real start of the season far more than any Super Cup. Glorified friendly plus another trophy that dilutes the whole point of getting a trophy is just not a selling point to me. This is one area where I'm all for American tradition superseding a larger soccer tradition. I'm not big on the Campeones Cup either, but I think that is more understandable from a marketing perspective that reflects the unique soccer culture here.
I'd love if the opening game to the season was a rematch of the final, or at least the champions at home.
I floated the idea of the Super Cup long ago. Only got a few people interested. I went back and tracked who the Super Cup winners would have been. (if the same team won the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup then they won the Super Cup by default obviously) Check it out if you like: http://rslcup.blogspot.com/search/label/mls - super cup I didn't do it this year, I'm kind of taking a break from soccer.
Sort of along the same lines, once the Canadian Premier League gets up and running and especially if the 3 Canadian MLS teams move to the CPL, I would like to see a CPL Shield vs. MLS Shield type of game. Can-Am Cup or something. Kind of would leave a legacy if the were to leave MLS. Could meet up in Concacaf as well.
But a Mexican champion team can play a Canadian MLS team in a USA based league for a title.... makes sense to me !
