I would think that Southgate will continue with the three at the back formation since he’s picked Walker,TAA and Trippier, unless he feels he could use Walker as an out and out centre back in a straight back four but doubt it. I just wonder how he’s going to fit Sancho into that formation? Just not sure where he would play? Maybe in the Sterling role behind Kane. I really hope for a change of formation to best suit our attacking players but don’t think it will happen.

The midfield combo will be interesting. Will he go with Dier AND Henderson. If not, then ut will be an inexperienced group, which is fine by me. Could we get away with Henderson, Mount and Maddison or is that too adventurous?

Also, not knocking Mount as we all know he’s a baller but if Southgate is picking Championship players, I kind of feel sorry for Grealish tbh. Mount can still be an asset for the U21’s no problem, so maybe Grealish could have been picked. I still think it’s only a matter of time before he’s a regular in the Squads so it’s not a major issue, just a preference that I would have probably gone with.

Not a fan of mount in the squad really. He plays in the second tier and he hasn't been tearing up trees. Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of the player but Will Hughes deserves to be in ahead of him.

I've heard that Liverpool think Alexander Arnold will eventually end up as a defensive midfielder..

    What announcement?

Tend to agree though, he doesn't look like he'll be any better than Dier, in fact he pretty much looks like a clone of him.

I think 5 goals from midfield and the most chances created in the division counts as some "trees". I agree on Grealish but in Southgate's system I don't think he and Mount are competing for a spot. I don't think Grealish could play in the midfield 3, so he's really competing with Sterling, Rashford and Sancho for the spot behind Kane. Mount can play in the 3 and so really a direct replacement for RLC.
Grealish like a lot of other attacking players would be better in a 4-3-3.

Not for me it doesn't. He's scored 3 in 11 in The Championship too. If he was having the impact say Maupay is at Brentford then maybe. I don't think there's anything exceptional about his performances this season so far. He's doing well but I would have thought that England would need more than that to call up a Championship player.

Let's be honest though, Mount is a premier league player, playing in the Championship. There are plenty of lower-half clubs that would take him.

Yes, I agree, I really think he would flourish with better players around him. He can’t afford another season in The Championship imo, either he gets promoted with Villa or moves on in the Summer for him to for fill his potential. He could feel quite disappointed that he’s been overlooked for this Squad despite two players in the Squad from the Championship.

I hope that Sancho, Mount, Maddison and Winks will still be available for selection for the U21 Euro’s this Summer? Will they be classed as above U21 selection like other players will be like Rashford, Gomez and TAA. I hope not, we need to take as strong a squad as possible for that Tournament.

Can't say that I understand the talk about Grealish. Fine to consider him, even when he's in the Championship, but what sort of sense would it make to give him a first call-up when his form is worse than it's been in over a year? At least wait until he's playing well to bemoan his omission. Mount has been comfortably better so far this season.

Hughes, I do feel a bit sorry for. Someone was talking about him playing wide (greengrass?) but the role he's playing in Watford's 4-2-2-2 really isn't very different to that of the two attacking midfielders in Southgate's 3-5-2. Perhaps he just wasn't at the front of the queue, or perhaps it indicates that Southgate plans to change formation and Hughes wouldn't obviously fit in.

Sturridge possibly "deserves" a call on the basis of his performances over the last month, but I think it'll take a bit longer to prove that he's going to stay in contention at Liverpool. Otherwise it would be a bit pointless to recall an injury-prone reserve who'll be close to 31 by the time of the next tournament.

Anyway, interesting squad, and it's as good a time as any to experiment. If one or two players can use it to make the leap from fringe options to real contenders then it'll have served its purpose.

I hope so too. Presumably Rice will also be available. I'd like to see TAA go and play the holding role.

Rice can't play in our U21s in this cycle.

Chabaloah has done nothing to be in the team..
Foden should have been the man..

Irrespective of Foden's merits, it's not likely that they're competing for the same roles, is it?

Think Chalobah is being paid back for his loyalty and commitment to the shirt. He’s had a rough ride and is starting again in many ways. It will be a good boost for him.

Southgate did make some comments on Chalobah which I'm not sure everyone here will be happy with:

"We have to approach it from a different angle now. We can't wait for a player to have two seasons in the Premier League, or be playing every week in his team. Nat has more youth caps bar perhaps James Milner, he trained with us in the summer and has had two 90 minutes for Watford in the League Cup or thereabouts. We know the qualities he has.

"It's maybe a bit early for him physically, but to come and train with us, we believe he can have an impact in the future."

Maybe a move to a big foreign club could be in the offing for Grealish ??

For those questioning Chalobah's inclusion. The option have often been Jake Livermore in recent years. What's there to lose? It's a problematic position and he has some promise.

I don't know why people are talking about Grealish so much to be honest. He's produced very little beyond being neat and tidy.
