Yeah I even had some friends who are more general sports fans then soccer fans but they wanted to check out the new stadium and once they saw the prices they said forget it.
cause west side midfield seats are listing for 50-115. on the other hand, for the Kickers Lite - Olimpia game tonight those same seats are going for $8.
I did too, and then on Sunday a ticket in the same area (in response to my request for the cheapest ticket) cost $35. That's not a big difference for one person, but if you're bringing a family it adds up. My sense is that the higher you go above a $20 "cheap" ticket the more it turns off casual fans. Think of all the folks who buy the cheap Nats tickets to party and watch a little baseball on the side.
I planned on going to one of Wednesday's games after work which is convenient for me. Then it hit me that with 8 pm start I would be home around midnight. I am not doing that.
I love the early start time, to be honest. Much better than the ridiculous 730/8pm Sunday night time.
They could have gone tonight for next to nothing. .. and seen a glorified open cup roster play a friendly.
You can go watch a rec league game Saturdays for free but neither is what would draw most soccer fans looking for a real match. Time is a valuable commodity just like money
The American one has a bunch of verses too. They just are not sung, because, well ... yanno ... the lyrics are violent and blatantly racist. So yeah, I am sure the Honduran anthem is still better.
Bah. We live up by the PA line, and we still go, unless it's a friendly. It's arguably more worth it when we win versus when we lose, of course.
Now I've seen everything. I guess I'm the only one who took American History class in school/college. Verse 3 is violent- I'll give you that.
Pretty par for the course for the era. Here's a catchy one you may have heard, and some of the verses are omitted when sung as well. I hope no one is shocked or requires therapy so be warned Arise children of the fatherland The day of glory has arrived Against us tyranny's Bloody standard is raised Listen to the sound in the fields The howling of these fearsome soldiers They are coming into our midst To cut the throats of your sons and consorts To arms citizens Form your battalions March, march Let impure blood Water our furrows What do they want this horde of slaves Of traitors and conspiratorial kings? For whom these vile chains These long-prepared irons? Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage What methods must be taken? It is us they dare plan To return to the old slavery! What! These foreign cohorts! They would make laws in our courts! What! These mercenary phalanxes Would cut down our warrior sons Good Lord! By chained hands Our brow would yield under the yoke The vile despots would have themselves be The masters of destiny Tremble, tyrants and traitors The shame of all good men Tremble! Your parricidal schemes Will receive their just reward Against you we are all soldiers If they fall, our young heros France will bear new ones Ready to join the fight against you Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors Bear or hold back your blows Spare these sad victims That they regret taking up arms against us But not these bloody despots These accomplices of Bouillé All these tigers who pitilessly Ripped out their mothers' wombs We too shall enlist When our elders' time has come To add to the list of deeds Inscribed upon their tombs We are much less jealous of surviving them Than of sharing their coffins We shall have the sublime pride Of avenging or joining them Drive on sacred patriotism Support our avenging arms Liberty, cherished liberty Join the struggle with your defenders Under our flags, let victory Hurry to your manly tone So that in death your enemies See your triumph and our glory!
As I'm typing this I'm looking for my gender neutral safe space where I can pet my emotional support animal. Its a White Rhino.
Back in the day, there was a guy who sang the Anthem in Tiger Stadium, "Fat Bob" Taylor, who would sometimes sing the fourth verse and freak visiting broadcasters out because they didn't know what the hell he was singing. This amused him. "Fat Bob" Taylor was one of the best anthem singers I've ever heard. Robert Merrill at Yankee Stadium was also excellent. That's about it. Except, of course for our own beloved D.C. Washington. He sings it nice and fast.
Placido Domingo sang it once at RFK, (he had once been a minor investor in the team,) He sang it as written (unlike D.C. Washington) and, of course, magnificently. I saw fans looking at each other mouthing "Who IS this guy?"
