The team is set up poorly. Tarbell is also a bad GK. I think I can hold both ideas in my head simultaneously. He got beat by a bouncing ball through his own wall that hit where his feet were, and he couldn't touch it away. That's bad, and it was the start of an avalanche of poor play.
All this talk of Tarbell reminds me that I encountered him in the VIP parking lot heading into the stadium at about 4:50 p.m., barely two hours before game time. I wondered to myself but did not verbalize (I said nothing to him, in fact), shouldn't you get to the stadium a little earlier, before the fans, so that you can be totally focused and get your head into the game? Am I mistaken in that regard? Is it customary for MLS players to arrive only two hours in advance of game time?
I'm not trying to apologize for anyone but I've played a bit(not in front of fans but still) and for some people arriving too early might be more detrimental. If you are a type of person who stresses himself out by overthinking things it's better to leave yourself no time to think. Tarbell doesn't exactly seem like someone with strong mental foundation, maybe he arrives exactly when the prep starts so he doesn't have to sit around nervously before the games. I could be completely off and he just might be an irresponsible prick but you never know.
I'm one that thinks we never should have fired him. We lost our pragmatic "defense first" mentality, and look at what it has gotten us.
From my time working with the visiting teams....teams / players are to be at the stadium 90 minutes prior to kickoff. You'll see the opponent team bus arrive at 5:30 for a 7pm start. Most of the Quakes arrive 90 minutes before hand or earlier, especially if they need some sort of treatment from the training staff.....so actually Tarbell was early.
I don't think so. Taking Wondo out of the starting line-up has hurt our results. To me it appears that a Swedish coach is playing is favorite forward from Sweden, and ignoring someone that has been the core of this team since it's rebirth. Given the lack of results is seems like a giant FU from the coach to the fans, and history of this team. He would have broken it by now, just from the PKs we have had so far this season. We fans have been thrown under the bus by Earthquakes management. Wondo taking down Landon Donovan's Goal scoring record would be a rallying point for Earthquake fans. I would return to Avaya stadium to celebrate that milestone with the ENTIRE team. Hope someone in the front office is listening and can make it happen.
Or last year's Avaya match versus Vancouver. Weren't the Whitecaps up 2-0, before the Quakes stormed back to win, 3-2?
I just had an idea. Would you guys come back to games and/or renew if Quakes offered 2 for 1? Both individual tix & STH plans? If people would stick around for that, then we should propose it to Fox
So is it safe to conclude the David Bingham really wasn't the big problem everybody thought he was? Asking for a friend.
Until we get some people who are willing to spend money on elite players, we all will continue to see this type of result. Just one high profile name can change a direction a team is heading...look at what Rooney has done for DCU. Middling players from middling leagues, in middling countries are ok, but the team needs to get a bona fide superstar. Spend some damn money! I still believe, I'll always be a SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FAN. Too bad that won't fit on the stone I'll get in a veterans memorial park, someday way down the road.
I've been talking about this all year. We constantly fail to take clear opportunities to transition quickly into attack when the ball turns over to us. Every time I see this (which is pretty often), I get the sense that the coach is telling them to be d-e-l-i-b-e-r-a-t-e when we win the ball, and very formally and methodically get everybody into position for an "attack". In the meantime, the defense has more than enough time to get themselves back into position to defend. Making matters worse, we move the ball around slowly once we have everybody in position, and every team knows what's coming. Even if they can't predict what's coming, it's relatively easy to defend because the "attack" develops so slowly. Another attack fails, camera cuts to a close-up of the dolt standing out in front of our bench, looking like he's pretending to be intensely examining what he's watching, but rarely opens his mouth. Rinse and repeat. Even though he got a goal in this game, I've been disappointed in Hyka lately in terms of how ineffective he is when he gets the ball. He makes a lot of moves, but they often don't amount to much. He'll make a move to his left, then a move to his right, but he very often ends up backpassing, because unlike Vako or Salinas (for example), he doesn't try to actually get past his defender and create some kind of danger. Credit to him for taking advantage of the sloppy Vancouver clearance and scoring, but I haven't seen enough of that this season. Eriksson is worse, but somehow I'm more frustrated with Hyka because he's always seemed to have more attacking ability than Eriksson. Absolutely, and even when our bad touches weren't fouling us up, there were far too many give-aways that killed decent attacking opportunities. Just about everybody was guilty of this at one stage of the game or another. I guess everybody has their off days, and Vako may have been due for one, but it still came as a surprise.
Yes, Saturday's match was exactly opposite to last year's match except that we scored the three goals after Vancouver became 10 men. On a second thought, Quakes had 11 players but one of them was Qwiberg

First of all, I was saying in another thread that we shouldn't fire Stahre until the end of the season. I am seeing the light now. His lack of reaction to the changing tide in this game was negligent. I do think, at this point, firing him sends a message to the players that we expect everyone_ to be ready for each game. Including the coach. Second, it was a rookie mistake from Felipe to give up that free kick. He didn't suspect the pressure and waited for that ball. He didn't mean to foul or even see it coming; he was just expecting more time. That seems to me like just a speed difference from the lower level to the higher and he'll get used to it. So that goal is on the "play the kids" idea, which is a good idea, but leads to things like that. The rest of it... I don't think my kids have every seen me so frustrated at a Quakes game. I took off my hat and threw it on the ground after the second goal.
My youngest predicted a 3-2 loss when we were up 2-0. I paid him a dollar for his correct prediction and he got to meet Harold Cummings in the stands, the "defender for Panama". I think they should fire the coach today, honestly, to show they care. And I also feel like we are subsidizing the learning process of the GM and coach. (And they are not learning)
