My standout performers : Moreno really making a case for himself with a lot of competition on the bench. Clean and safe passing. Just facilitating everything from a deep position. Canouse keeps bringing a little bit of that steel that was lacking down the spine of the team. Really loved the yellow card he picked up. Every player gets one rough tackle per game, and he used his at the perfect moment. Also loved the block he made in the box a few minutes later. Asad probably had his best game IMO. He was so confident on the ball, at times it was a little too risky. But he kept on getting out of tight spots, sometimes outnumbered 2v1 or 3v1. When Asad gets the one touch passing going with Rooney and Acosta, the game starts looking like a practice drill. Acosta put on another dribbling/passing clinic. Teams can no longer triple team, and 1v1 it's almost impossible to stop him. If anything, he's his own enemy sometimes, being too cute and casual ... but I understand what he's trying to accomplish. It's that Argentinian philosophy of mastering the tempo of the game. Going from 5th gear, to 1st gear and back up to 5th gear, to always keep the defenders off balance and frustrated. But my favorite part of Acosta's game tonight was his defensive work off the ball. The way he used his fouls was masterful. He was making his fouls at the perfect tactical moment to disrupt Portland, but the fouls were just routine enough that he didn't get the yellow until the 73rd minute. And then when he's subbed off, he makes sure to stretch the hamstring and take his sweet time, giving our defense a much needed rest right when Portland was building momentum.
Yeah if I feel any sympathy for a guy who's strategy seems to be assembling decent players and letting em coach themselves... I feel bad that Olsen didn't have Canouse all year. The east is so wacky that we couldve looked a HELL of a lot better on the long lead-up to AF with his leadership intangibles.
Wayne Rooney showbis worth the admission. Mattock’s encore was fantastic to see unfold. Defense gives me fits.
nice of the Timbers to not bother showing up. A good all-around team effort though. Who expected Fisher to score?
Great result and some inspired play, but I still get very nervous when any opponent, including the Timbers, sets up around our penalty area. Our best defending was in the last 10 minutes, when it seemed we were determined not to let them score. Until then, we seemed complacent and just barely avoided being scored upon (again). I hope our crack coaching staff gets over the euphoria of this big home victory quickly and sets to work putting some discipline into the defense.
In the Orlando game, Olsen had Arriola as the "8" and Canouse as the "6". The effect was underwhelming, particularly Canouse. He's an "8" pure and simple. Tonight, Moreno played the "6" and kept things tidy, allowing Canouse to move around a bit. Canouse and Arriola occasionally switched off because Arriola has played the "8" this season. That type of setup can give the other team fits because they have to track Canouse and Arriola all over the field. With Moreno staying home to protect the backline, Canouse and Arriola have the freedom to improvise a bit. I have to say Fisher has grown on me. His defense has gotten better and his goal tonight was as well taken as Rooney's first. Beautiful pass from Acosta and Fisher slotted that ball inch perfect like he had been playing forward his whole life. Mattocks' goal at the end was so very well taken, a real gem. After the match I saw Rooney with his arm around him talking to him and congratulating him on the goal. I think DCU finally has a real captain. Tonight was a comprehensive beat down of Portland -- something I just didn't expect would happen. As someone said earlier, that Rooney guy is pretty good.
I was expecting the worst, and United played, arguably, it's best game - against a quality team. Rooney has made such a difference! I was leery about the move at first, not because he's not quality, but because he might be beyond his sell-by date, and he might not take things here seriously. I, too, am ready for my serving of crow!
