Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed to the thread. Major shout out to Sitruc for the pictures over the past few months. I always looked forward to the photography dumps. I still can't believe it's really happening but I'm really stoked for the game tomorrow. Hope everyone that's going has a great time. Vamos United.
I got a couple of confirmations that much of it is temp. All roads are open. Parking enforcement is even doing tours. The fan walk bricks have been installed. If you squint when looking at the webcam... you still won't see them.
The CapitolRiverfront BID adding some updated signage outside of Navy Yard metro. Glad the field sponsor is Audi and not Zipcar as the field automatically jumps to the top of the list due to alphabetizing This is my first time approaching from the direction of Nationals stadium since the construction started of AudiField. In my opinion, approaching from the Navy Yards makes AudiField appear to be tied into the geography of the area better than approaching from the Titanic memorial or Waterfront metro. In fact, I walked up past Teague Park to the Navy Yards and AudiField is in the same skyline as Nationals park. I've also included a picture of the special Audi team car. When I was there early evening, there was a lot of street cleaning going on. See full photos in next post. I couldn't enlarge my own thumbnails so was not sure if others could do it.
I was walking around the stadium and realized that I will gain a lot of free time after tomorrow and I don't know what I will do with it. Am I supposed to focus on my family, get married and start a family? ******** United. Make Poplar Point happen, Soon-Shiong.
The hundreds of hours I spent walking around the venue taking hundreds of thousands of photos. I set aside time for games starting in '96. The opening of the stadium will pretty much destroy my life. Thanks a lot United.
We have a home game in our new stadium today! For at least 24 hours I'm going to just appreciate that. Wow. Been a long time coming. I'm wearing my 1997 DCU jersey to the game.
NO, YOU CANNOT ENJOI THIS! I will admit I am quite sad today. a day I should be stoked, I am a little happy, but I imagined I would be in tears and so happy. I hope those who arent in SGs, have a GREAT time and enjoy the day. dont let the SG crap blind that. I hope all works out smoothly. I really do (minus the SG crap) BTW prices on the app for concessions for express. interesting, not much more than i expected. $10 coors light 24oz.
On weekends I don't think anyone would find it out of the ordinary if the trains didn't show up for work.
I realized I began a post of tweets at work that I didn't finish. Oh well. I'm pretty sure I linked to this Washington Post article on the venue. Audi Field debuts tomorrow, and @WaPoExpress will have an 8-page pullout available for @dcunited fans around the stadium. Has anyone seen Gordon Ramsey's latest show on FOX, Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell and Back? That's what it looks like around the venue. A lot is going on in and around the stadium. Field House has already ditched their World Cup theme (flags of all participating nations) to be more like Yards Park (same group). All of the roads around the stadium were open except for one barrier still on S Street. I believe the PEPCO walls are at a level of completion. The incomplete sections are areas with gates/entrances to the PEPCO site. It looks like most of the exterior of the venue is finished. For whatever reason, southern portions of the east building were not completed until yesterday. The southeast corner of phase 1 that is supposed to eventually get a retail building and is bordered by PEPCO walls and Audi Drive is full of gravel. There are a lot of temporary signs on the exterior of the venue. It looked like many on the interior are also temporary signs and I could see some permanent signs still needed to be installed. The SE tifo display may have been made by the same sign company that did banners that are beneath the west canopy and on the exterior of the video board and south audi ad. The wayfinding signs were somewhat incomplete since they required electric and were just put in. The bases have not all been filled where they were installed. Some of the lettering cutouts is inconsistent/incorrect as well (northwest gate area). I didn't see any metal detectors on the east side by what is now Gate B. That area always made sense to be an entrance, but it was not always a planned entrance as much as it was another way for vehicles to access the ROW. The S Street entrance was shown as a single door in the middle of the east side before. Especially if there are no metal detectors, I wish the same was done at what is an exit gate next to the bike valet or the south corner that is access to the ROW. FWIW, the gates for the South ROW access fly open. I can imagine that being a problem. You don't want to be in the way of those. A broadcast truck is parked under the east stands along the easement/ROW. The only area around the venue that has limited access is the security gated off large field that is the phase 2 construction area. The only reason I see for it to be access limited is because seed was just put down and they want it to take and grow. The fan walk area and park are open. The rolled out turf still needs time of course. The area that took was just finished and looked like there were a few audibles on material choice is just fine, tightly packed gravel or something. The bricks are on display. It's not a great area. Some appear to be placed to be more prominent than others... Lindsay Simpson. Tom Hunt's also stood out. There are a few prominently displayed audi's throughout the venue since the thing is just a car dealership. The ticket office opens at 10 am if anyone needs assistance today. The mics can be a little spotty. I have no idea what is incomplete versus what simply isn't going to happen. For example, the rain leaders are obviously white although even some conduit is black. #RainLeadersSoWhite Evidently I was tired from a long day at work and then time spent around the venue so I'll blame that for why I fell asleep on a floor at my home. This has been a fun week to discover that I ride my bike over an area with a lot of goat head thorns. I might post some photos from yesterday during the Wimbledon final. I probably won't post any photos from this morning.
@sitruc Can't thank you enough for all of the pics and info you posted in this thread. It'll be my first visit today (not including a quick glance from Ft. McNair once a few months ago) and I feel like I've already been there thanks to you.
Thank you for your efforts sitruc. Great work. I hope the stone dust finish is temporary on the Fan Plaza. That stuff is good for dog parks... But not really for high traffic areas. And when it rains? Don't walk in that crap. My guess is they ran out of time. In the off-season it will be brick pavers- I hope.
I hadn't seen that...makes me wonder why does the roof frame extend further than the actual cover? Probably already been discussed earlier in the thread if this is intentional
Originally, it was supposed to have a clear roof. Currently it doesn't. We don't know if there are plans to add it between seasons or if it was removed from the project forever. This would be similar to the World Cup 2014 stadium in Sao Paulo. For the WC the clear roof had not been installed. Now they have the clear roof at the edge.
You all must be feeling the same way today as we San Jose Earthquakes fans did back on March 22, 2015. Congratulations to D.C. United and its fans on the opening of your long-awaited new stadium! -G
It was definitely lined for some other type of surface a few days ago. I'm not sure it will be temporary though. That could be the final solution to a cheap rush job. I'm pretty sure that's another PEPCO or other utility easement too. Of course MLS venues in Bridgeview and San Jose have not added materials. Likewise, San Jose has not added a skin to their venue. I hope it is completed just like I hope one day the rain leaders are painted black and pocket parks are added.
I'd like to thank Djokovic and Nadal's match that was suspended last night as well as Wimbledon not having fifth set tiebreakers for allowing me to be lazy. It's a shitshow down by what road signs call the "stadium area" this morning. The run/walk goes by the ballpark and over the inbound lane of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge over to the Anacostia Park so every road in the area was closed. I hope all of those extra barriers were for this event and will be gone for the rest of the festivities. The security command posts were very busy. //Of course as I type this Nadal was nearly broken but then he got it together again.
