Apart from the missed penalty which was corrected by VAR. Gassama was good. His positioning wasn't good but he showed good personality and good management with players.

Because it would be an absolutely blatant violation of protocol for the VAR team to tell him to put up his flag. That's simply not how it is supposed to work or how they are trained.

The simple explanation is what has already been posited: he was following the instruction to delay a close call, is not used to doing that, and was having trouble figuring out the right time to raise the flag.

While I agree it was definitely a penalty, I can readily see how it was missed. That kind of foot catch and pull (wait! is that a pulling foul!?! :ROFLMAO:) can be hard to discern from a slip in live action as it isn't the primary place you expect a foul.

I am perplexed at how much he seemed to be in players' way--I don't recall a professional game where I have noticed a ref in the way so often.

Thank you for confirming that my ears aren't bad. I was thinking "did he really say that?" (Probably 90 percent of the game, I had the sound muted, because I think I watch better without the sound.)

He did it probably 15 or 20 times. I was getting close to muting. I probably will next time he has a game.

I went with Spanish. They too had a rules expert FIFA International. I could get the gist and since he seemed to agree with what I saw he was pretty good :D. Enjoyed that they let more crowd noise though. Makes me question FOX's decision that US can't handle that much excitement for 90+ minutes?

Because that's not how VAR works. He's not reviewing it unless one of the reviewable scenarios which this isnt

That was the Spanish announcer announcing in English. In Spanish the phrase for "throw in" uses the Spanish word for hands, ''manos"

On the TSN broadcast, Howard Webb crushed the referee for failing to call the penalty kick in the first half saying he was in the perfect position to see it.

But he called it. So? Isn't that what VAR is for?

No. VAR is not an excuse to miss calls, it is a tool to catch and fix clear errors. referees are still supposed to get the calls right during the flow of the game. So any time VAR is used Tom hanger something, it means the call on the field was a clear error in real time. Sometimes a clear error is excusable by angle, unusual play, etc. Webb is saying this is not one of those excusable errors, but a clear error that a white badge should not be making.
