The league owns all of the teams and player contracts as part of the single entity model. Each team is operated by an Investor/Operator Group. MLS teams are akin to franchises.

 

Hunt Sports Group does not intend to sell the Columbus Crew, as reported elsewhere over the weekend, the team said Wednesday.

The Crew issued a statement clarifying statements that Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber made to Sports Business Daily on Friday that the Hunt family had made a “commitment to get out” of the team because it also owns FC Dallas. (Skip to the 9:30 mark.)

The Crew said that didn’t accurately reflect the family’s intentions, echoing what Crew investor/operator Clark Hunt said during an interview with Columbus Business First when he was in town last month that the organization was seeking only minority investors from the region.

“The city of Columbus, the Crew and Crew Stadium are extremely important to our family, and that hasn’t changed,” Hunt said in the team’s statement. “We continue to believe that additional local investment only serves to strengthen the Crew’s standing in Columbus and Major League Soccer, and over the past two years, we have openly explored the possibility of bringing in minority investors to the club.”

“In an attempt to emphasize the importance of identifying additional investors in the Crew, Commissioner Garber’s recent comments overstated this objective,” Hunt said.

We know this but it doesn't stop the league from using the terms interchangeably as it suits them.

As one of the aforementioned long term Crew fans, allow me to attest to the fact that @AndyMead is as stand up a guy as they come and while he and I have certainly disagreed about our share of stuff over the years, I can vouch that he a) thinks Precourt is a disgraceful excuse for a human being and b) wants the Crew to stay in Columbus where it belongs.
