I have been in contact with your Cauldron. We will be tailgating, bringing banners (and a STC activity we hope), and pounding drums (beers too!). We hope to leave a STC banner with you good folks when we depart.

We will be starting STC chants, and we dearly hope for KC fans to join in.

    Thank you again.

From the MLS web giving SKC third place in the power rankings:

“The attack has dried up over the past month and it's clear Yohan Croizet is no Felipe Gutierrez. They need the Chilean back and scoring goals in order to stay atop the West long-term.”

Since Gutierrez is out for at least the next two months, is PV going to just keep grinding with Yohan or try something else? I’m hoping for something else because if they play Columbus the way they played Minny, I don’t think we’ll like the result.

terrible second half from us. we barely even looked threatening with a man advantage for an entire 45 min. we sure did move the ball side to side at midfield with aplomb, though.

    two points dropped.

EDIT: also, while i actually disagreed with the red on higuain, the failure to not do anything with the full swing to the face by martinez on sinovic is simply outrageous. how can anyone with eyesight claim that's not a red card violation?

All anyone is going to be talking about with this game are the red card and the missing red card. But that's not what we should be talking about. We should be talking about how our offense has gone impotent again. Yes, Columbus is a good team. Yes, they have a great defense. Yes, they parked the bus in the second half.

But earlier this year, we looked dangerous on offense. The last couple games, not so much.

    Two things concern me:
    1. Croizet still continues to show me nothing to make me think he is going to be a good player in this league.
    2. I'm afraid Russell is going to hit a wall. Between the heat which he is unaccustomed to, and the no break coming from Derby, (not to mention national team callups), he's going to wear down quickly. PV really needs to start some rotation. Get Belmar or Gerso some starts.

When Croizet gets the ball I just sort of cringe. He looks like both his mind and body are in quicksand.

I'd rather see Jimmy or someone from SPR get those minutes at this point. Either that or put someone in at right back and move Zusi up as someone else had suggested in another thread.

There were so many frustrating things in this game, its hard to know where to start:
    1. Robert Sibiga, usually an OK ref, had his head completely up his ass today. How do you make a complete no-call then go to the VAR and give a red card for the same play? Unbelievable and embarrassing. Then how does Seth take a malicious punch to the face and it go completely unpunished? Wow.
    2. The AR on the East touchline was out of position all night long. He couldn’t have made a correct off side call it he had to.
    3. Johnny got his first taste of 95 degrees and high humidity and I don’t think it was to his liking. He looked slower and tired a lot of the game.
    4. Shelton, Ok, he didn’t score but he did a lot of good things out there today. After Melia, he was SKC’s most effective player.
    5. The offensive attack has just dried up and died. It’s hard to watch the midfield and defenders kick the ball around for minutes only to have a toothless attack fizzle without any result. I think they need to sit down and watch game videos of Atlanta United’s attack.
    6. Berhalter came in with a good game plan and made the proper adjustments at the half to stymie the powder puff attack of SKC.
    7. PV subs in Kuzain in the midfield with both Belmar and Busio on the bench. I’m still scratching my head on that one. I guess they needed another guy to pass the ball around the midfield and use up more clock.
    8. If Pipa hadn’t received the red and played the full 90 minutes,,,Columbus probably wins this game.
    9. They really missed Medranda today.
    10. Please Felipe, get better fast.

I'm going to disagree a bit on this: Croizet was not a problem in his match. He didn't help us much, but he didn't really hurt us. Rather he was a symptom of a side that looks as if it was not ready to deal with a KC summer (really, who can be, in May FFS).
Melia was fantastic, as usual. Gerso was energetic, and had a pep in his step that no one else had all night. Opara and Besler were quite composed and did a nice job, and Seth before the clobbering looked okay.
But really, wasn't that about it?
Columbus was better, however, and I really was not expecting that. Not that they aren't a good side, but while we looked on top of this match for the first five minutes, after that and until the red card they were taking it to us.
The only moment during which I thought we might score in this match was the Croizet belter into the side netting, which had to be on frame. Still, we at least looked dangerous in that move. I guess Shelton also could have scored when he was free on goal, but I didn't get even a bit hopeful and it was a weak effort.
Look at our Audi numbers. They aren't bad. Some players, like Shelton, fared quite well, but they did so without really causing a fuss in this match (although he was credited with four key passes, and that begs the question of exactly what door were they to?).
For being up a man for a half, the numbers don't tell a happy story. They don't show an unhappy one. It's just .... well not much of anything.
They show a side that dominated the game for a half without ever really looking as if they might score.
Russell's overall number was 48. He's been operating in the 300 to 1000 range.
How Salloi had ten times his numbers I don't get. He looked similarly drained. He wasn't getting his shot off. I admit, I am now to the point where I see him as our primary hope to break through with a bit of magic in a slog.
My takeaway was that we've seen this sort of match before. There might not be anything to read into it. It might simply be too hot for man or beast-mode. But maybe we really do need a 9 who will take a single chance and make it count.

    Lobato.

    Blinding, scorching sun.

Lackluster attempts against a 10-man squad resulting in yet another nationally televised borefest

The DISCO reversed Higuain’s red card suspension for the studs-up tackle on Roger, but fined him for refusal to leave the field. Pulling the red was probably the right thing to do, but it cost Columbus a potential win away from home. VAR is good, but its not perfect.

DisCo also went back and gave Martinez a 2 game suspension for his slap on Sinovic.

what an egregious error. has anyone seen anything from the ref or the league that attempts to justify how that wasn't reviewed?

EDIT: nevermind. just saw this posted over in mls:n&a:

    Statement from PRO.

The Professional Referee Organization (PRO) takes very seriously the training, education, and proficiency of officials.

During the 54th minute of the match between Sporting Kansas City and Columbus Crew SC on May 27, violent conduct was displayed by Crew SC midfielder Cristian Martinez. The incident was not seen by the on-field officials. However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) checked and analyzed the play, but incorrectly assessed the nature of the offense.

According to the Laws of the Game, striking or attempting to strike an opponent constitutes a direct red card. The non-showing of a red card to Martinez for violent conduct was a clear and obvious error, and the VAR failed in not recommending a review for the non-issuing of a red card.

Howard Webb also responded to the tweet about the statement with a little more info on why the VAR official didn't recommend a review.

Agreed that rescintion was the right move, but the other issue was the no call in the first place..
