You watch, come January Mathis won't be coming to MLS and then you can come back to this exact thread and apologize. Okay? He won't be coming to MLS and I won't be wrong about it... Mathis has never stated his desire to come back to MLS except for what Pastorino has said about it in the paper, but has anyone actually heard from Mathis on this? Would you think that if he's not in the plans at Hannover and he's planning on coming back to MLS he should be able to talk about it, right? Hell nothing has stopped Mathis from spouting off before... Plain and simple, Pastorino can say what he'd like to say about Mathis and you can believe it. And I can tell you what I have heard from people who know about the situation with Mathis, but alas, I guess nobody will be proved right or wrong until the January transfer comes and goes...
Ellinger told me that: RSL/MLS made an offer. Mathis made a counter offer. RSL/MLS responded to that, no details. All of this as of last Friday.
I could go with that... but I prefer cheerleaders to be better looking than Rob Stone and female. But that being said I guess I could refer to him as a misguided cheerleader if it makes him feel a little better.
Fid, while I don't have any knowledge of Mathis' future, I think the above statement was off in a couple of spots. First, regardless of whether or not Hannover has discarded him mentally and Mathis wanted to come back to MLS, it's still bad to talk about it in public. Say Lienen gets sacked and the new coach likes Mathis' game? Say another Euro team shows interest in Mathis? Once Clint comes out in public saying that he wants to return to MLS, he loses all bargaining power. MLS will know that and be able to low-ball him. They've done it in the past. MLS doesn't pay a player what they're worth, they pay them the lowest amount they can get away with. Second, Mathis has never been the type to "spout off." I don't know where you're getting that from. If anything, he's been just the opposite. When Arena and the press were accusing him of everything short of sobriety at the WC, Mathis kept his mouth shut. Josh Wolff had to come to his defense. Near the end of his time with the Metros, when Saciewicz spouted off to the press that Mathis needed psychiatric help, Clint kept his mouth shut. Mathis can be a bit of a headache at times, and his play can be streaky and erratic, but in terms of his public comments, Mathis has always been nothing but a model professional.
If you want another source other than Rob Stone heres one: In a recent issue of Sports Illustrated at the back there's an article about MLS Cup followed by a blurb of Mathis being rumored to RSL.
http://www.sportinglife.com/footbal...eed/04/11/27/SOCCER_Ger-Hannover_Preview.html Hannover has heard nothing from realsaltlake or any other MLS club.
Nothing from RSL or any other club? Or is it that MLS who actually signs the players have not contacted them yet? It looks to me like MLS has not contacted them. However, I wouldn't be suprised if RSL is getting their information from Mathis' agent, I also have worked in media enough to believe that statement means only that no one from MLS (read: "no one from the league office" has contacted them. Anyone know the exact rules on when a team can actually contact another "officially" to discuss a player transfer? Can they do it before the transfer window? I know in some sports the only contact that is allowed outside the trade/draft windows is with agents of players, not the teams or players themselves.
From today's fan chat: "Sam in Salt Lake City asks Do you think you can continue to be the leading scorer in the league with this new team? If so, who will be your biggest help in scoring those goals? Jason Kreis I plan on continuing to score a lot more goals in the next few years so that should keep me abreast of everyone. I know we are getting close to adding a new player that I'm a huge fan of and I've been a big fan of Andy Williams over the last few years. Andy will be great in feeding balls as he's got great creativity." I wonder who that might be? He's talking about scoring goals and he brings up the new player close to signing... Man Fidlerre, I can't figure out why or how you've convinced yourself that there's no chance of Mathis going to RSL. There's good reason to believe you're wrong, and the evidence keeps building...
Sorry, I misled you. Dipsy coming doesn't effect Mathis coming in any way. Its possible though that Kreis was talking about Dispy not Clint, although not highly likely.
Ya, now that I think about it, Dipsy's probably not big enough news to get Jason Kreis excited enough to mention it in an interview. I like Dipsy myself, but he's hardly played at all in MLS.
I have my own reasons..time will tell who's right and who's wrong. You believe what you've heard from RSL and I believe what I've heard from people outside of MLS, there's nothing wrong with that is there?
Kreis's opinion I thought Mormons didn't believe in Jason Kreis.* *This is a reference to certain evangelical churches that do not view The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as "Christian" because LDS doctrine (like Orthodox churches of Central/Eastern Europe and Central/Southwestern Asia) considers God the Father and Jesus Christ as separate entities, rather than the Trinitarian view espoused by Catholicism and most of Protestantism. Add that to the rough similarity in pronunciation to "Jason Kreis," and I had a great joke. Well, okay, maybe just a mediocre joke.
Is there a deadline here that RSL needs to finish this by? I'm not up on the legalese of MLS and Euro club player sales.
