Another youngster in the league. James Murphy, formerly of Sheffield Wednesday, has signed on at LAFC. Ireland eligible as well, which is how he got to Wednesday. His brother, John Murphy, was recently at an Ireland camp. By the way, I haven't seen news that Shaft Brewer has actually signed on with LAFC. [I guess that would technically be a loan from Leipzig.] We know he was there in training camp. I recently saw a discussion online about whether FCD actually still holds Brewer's rights.
MLS schedule for Week 1..................... The game of most interest to me is of course RSL versus FCD. That's the game most likely to feature a bunch of thread-eligible players. Just from the comments on this board, we can tell that Atlanta at Houston is of great interest as we're on Carleton watch. I'm also keeping an eye on New England at Philadelphia. Will Trusty be starting for the Union at centerback? Could be a nice story for us this year.
Don't forget that all out-of-market games are available to stream for free until ESPN+ is launched this spring. You just have to set up an account. https://live.mlssoccer.com/subscribe
I heard on ETR Danny Acosta played for his friends indoor team with out telling RSL and is kind of in trouble right now. Don’t expect to see him start.
6 games today: Toronto vs Columbus @ 1:00: The only player of note is Akinola, but it doesn't appear that he's in Toronto's first teams plans so far this year. Houston vs Atlanta @ 3:30: I don't think we ever saw Atlanta's full traveling squad, but we know Carleton travelled, and Vazquez probably? did, too, given Barco's injury. Who Tata puts where will be interesting, especially if he slides Nagbe up to the wing, but I'm not fully leaving out the possibility Carleton starts. Philadelphia vs New England @ 7:00: Trusty will start and Fontana, based on the last few preseason games, probably will, too. Hopefully Jones and Real are on the bench as well, but I don't think McKenzie is going to be with the first team quite yet. Angking likely won't be involved. Personally I'm hoping they loan him to a USL team somewhere. Orlando vs DC @ 7:30: Da Silva is suspended, Stajduhar's situation is unfortunate, but I'm interested in how Lindley is used. Personally, I think that Lindley should be playing every minute in MLS this year, but I'm not so sure it starts off that way. Dallas vs RSL @ 8:00: Cannon and Glad should start, but outside of that, I have no idea. @Brotheryoungbuck's post above means that we won't see Acosta, but will we see Lennon and/or Saucedo? And will Herrera be on the bench? And what about Pomykal? San Jose vs Minnesota @ 10:30: Hopefully Yueill starts and Toye gets some debut minutes, and I'm wondering if Marcinkowski makes the bench or not. He definitely should.
You forgot Durkin, but Olson probably did, as well. Good news on Acosta. I thought Petke was just being a typical MLS coach and playing an inferior foreigner over an American, but that it's discipline related is good to hear, and it might be some fixed suspension, anyway. What is described there isn't even bad, IMO.
IIRC, wasn't Acosta in Petke's doghouse for part of last season for some other professionalism reason?
I think so. I'm not sure I'd consider this instance to be bad professionalism though, if thats what happened.
A half hour late, but on the bench nevertheless. Vazquez, too. #ATLUTD's Starting XI to face @HoustonDynamo pic.twitter.com/F0fGWb6p47— Atlanta United FC (@ATLUTD) March 3, 2018
Jack of all trades foreign guy starting over the most exciting American prospect in the league on opening day on a “national” tv channel I don’t get. It’s like MLS knows how to target my hype and kill it right in front of me.
Nah fam Tata is gonna use all 3 subs in the midfield and backline. If not, he'll do some sh*t like subbing in Vasquez or Williams
I also think Vazquez and Williams come in before Carleton. Thats why it would be bad if Gonzalez-Parez had to come out of the match here because that might mean Carleton won't play. Need all three subs to be for attacking players, IMO.
Which was the problem last year. Instead of addressing it they traded for Nagbe and signed Barco. Not just the defense, but the defensive midfield needed help. We should just wait with regards to Carleton. He could easily play some significant minutes in the second half, which would already be a step up from last year.
