Nairn have never had a good season in the NWSL and it's not just last year. She was inconsistent in Washington as well. She has no impact on a game. If you are looking to fill up the numbers in midfield, she's great. If you are looking to build a winning and competitive squad, she's offer nothing exceptional.
Ok interesting. Just a difference of opinion, I guess. I think Nairn was one of Washington's most consistent players from 2014-2016.
Probably. Though I still think benching her won’t be controversial as the starters should be Utsugi, Fishlock and Long
Oddly enough, I did a little statistical study of NWSL players and Long came out as number 5 in my best of all time list. I'll publish my list one of these days. I agree that this doesnt seem like a good trade for Seattle. Seattle gets an aging Long for an already aging team. Portland gets rights to a good, versatile player. Sky Blue gets two relatively young players, both either good or potentially good. Sky Blue can use Stott to beef up a miserable defense, but where does Johnson fit it? With Kerr and Groom, Sky Blue already has 2 top-notch forwards; maybe Johnson plays in the middle and Kerr plays on the wing -- but you have to keep Kerr in her best position, and if that's central, then Johnson is left out. I can't see Johnson on the wing. She looks like a center forward to me, a target forward. Maybe she's a super sub for Kerr and Groom. In whatever case, Sky Blue should score a lot of goals in 2018.
....yeah, I don't think you'll find a single Spirit fan who says that. Fan favorite in DC and often considered a clutch player.
I feel bad for Allie, but something happened to her this year, I don't know what, but she wasn't her former self. She took a couple of weeks off for personal reasons and just didn't seem to have it after that. Word was that she was ready to leave. Essentially, Seattle gets Allie for two good young players (to Sky Blue) and the #2 2020 draft pick (looking like a very good draft year); Sky Blue gets the two good young players for the rights to Foord; and Portland gets the rights to Foord and the #2 2020 draft pick for Allie. It sounds like the Thorns already have a deal with Foord (her coming to the Thorns has been announced in Australia). As a Thorns fan, I love this. But, time will tell. For Seattle, it could work out well, but again time will tell. For Sky Blue, I have no idea.
As a 5 year Spirit season ticket holder I can tell you that I don't think Nairn has a positive impact. People in the stands around me felt the same way. Her positives are outweighed by her negatives. She is far too slow of foot. I don't need every player to run fast, but I need players that are not consistently bypassed in the midfield with a pass 4 feet from them. She can hit an accurate long pass, but she telegraphs it too much with a chop step, and doesn't attempt it often enough. Her lack of hustle on defense was painful. Nairn has her moments but they are not enough.
I've been to a number of Spirit games and I agree that Nairn wasn't all that. Don't get me wrong, she's a good player. But her lack of defense among other items make it so she's not a player that I feel MUST be on the field. Long's really not my favorite player either, but I feel it's a safe to say she's an upgrade. But what about Matheson? I thought she was in Seattle....
I guess at her age and after an year-long injury, no-one can guarantee that she will be a starter. Don't get me wrong: if one could be sure that she's at her pre-injury levels, it would be a fine addition to the team, but I guess that in this situation it's impossible not to question the actual potential quality of her contribution.
Matheson is in Seattle but I doubt after two back to back long term injuries that she would walk into the starting lineup of this squad or any squad to be frank. She's an excellent player but the signing of Long means that we can ease her back into competitive fitness instead of relying on her from the get go.
I stand corrected! I guess we must've sat around different people, then. I'm with FawcettFan14 that my experience Nairn was always one of the rocks of the midfield in her time with the team and relatively popular among the fans around me.
Not sure what to make of this trade. Jordan skipped playing in Portland last season to play overseas. If Houston confident that she would play this year? Also, she's the latest addition to their musical chairs of center forwards as they look to kick start the offense. Hopefully this one pays off. And she left Scotland because she didn't like training on turf which made her a rough fit in Turf Soccer City. The problem here is the Dash midfield which has gone from Lloyd, Brian, Andressinha, Brooks to just Brooks
The talk in Houston is that they were looking to free up money for another big signing and Andressinha was making the league max. As to Jordan she is the center forward type the team needs to compliment their flank attackers.
In three years with the Dash she has averaged 9 games per season and almost half of those were in 2015.
Well, after missing Henry, Nadim, Dagny and Long, it was expected that they would have looked for some good signing in the midfield.
Andressinha of Houston for Jordan of Portland? Straight up? Portland should be prosecuted for highway robbery. Houston must have a great deal of faith in Jordan's future -- or Andressinha said "trade me or else." .
Again, Andressinha was making max money. How were the Dash supposed to re-sign her next year? Portland is willing to hope that she buys into the Portland atmosphere enough to stay. The Houston ambiance wasn't gonna do it.
maybe (at least partly) because vladtko used her well in kc and knows how to deploy her in this short rostered league.
Mathias always seems to find a way into the coaches heart. She's the journeyman ball-kicker personified.
