After the 2016/2017 3rd matchday of the Group Stage, the best team is Copenhagen (Denmark), even if they lost the last game 0-1 at Leicester. The team's total score is 161,56.
Austria Wien (Austria) is at second place, with 157,80 points.
The third team is Hapoel Be'er Sheva (Israel), with 148,88 points.

After the 2017/2017 group stage the best team is Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), who started from the 3rd qualifying round of Champions League, being eliminated by Young Boys; in Europa League they won the play-off matches and all the 6 group stage games, scoring 21 goals and conceding 5. The team's total score is 238,40.
Copenhagen (Denmark) are at the second place, with 234,35 points.
Osmalinspor (Turkey) are third, with 219,35 points.

All the first three clubs will play in Europa League the next round, while the best team still in Champions League is Monaco (France), who won their group with 11 points, 9 goals scored and 7 conceded. They are 4th at 214,96 points.

Club Brugge (Belgium) is, and will be, the worst team this year with 1 point, having lost all the matches in the group stage, scoring 2 goals and conceding 14.

Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) has been the worst team in Champions League group stage history, having ended the group with no points, no goals scored and 15 conceded, but they had passed 3 rounds before qualifying for the group, and they also had a lower initial score than Club Brugge (44,44 vs. 47,37), so their match coefficients were higher.

The worst team still in the competition is Legia Warsaw (Poland), who won 3 qualifying rounds in Champions League, but in the group stage made 4 points conceding 24 goals; the only match they won in the group was the last one against Sporting CP, surpassing them in the group ranking and qualifying for the Europa League's round of 32.

I didn't realize they hadn't scored. The 2009-2010 Champions League page on Wikipedia says "Maccabi Haifa was the first club to finish the Champions League group stage with 0 wins, 0 goals and 0 points." They lost 1:0 five times and 3:0 once for a total of 8 goals allowed, so Dinamo Zagreb did much worse than that. Wikipedia is redundant because saying "0 goals and 0 points" would have been sufficient because a club with 0 points also had 0 wins.

Yes, Dinamo Zagreb did very bad this year, and the 2 matches against Juventus were quite boring; I think also the others were not very exciting.
Increasing the number of teams and matches doesn't always mean to increase the level of the show.

At the end of the 2016/2017 campaign the best team is Monaco (France), with 546,79 points.
They took part in the Champions League, starting from the third qualifying round and being eliminated in the semi-finals round by Juventus, after 9 wins, 2 draws and 5 defeats (2 against Juventus).
The low starting score (35,88) let them collecting so many points.
Much part of the total score is due to the quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund, whom they defeat by 3-2 and 3-1. The coefficient for Monaco was 1,661, so they managed to gain 239 points (+10 bonus) in that round only.

The second team in the ranking is Juventus (Italy) with 516,48 points, and the third is Real Madrid (Spain) with 500,64 points. These two teams were the CL's finalists.

The best team in Europa League has been Manchester United (England), who won the Cup finishing in 4th position with 394,04 points.

Yes they did a pretty good job, with 3 rounds in the Champions League and then the group stage and another round in Europa League. They got negative scores only against Sparta Prague (2 defeats in the group stage) and Besiktas (2 defeats in the EL round of 32).
They got a lot of points (103) against Internazionale: they had a coefficient of 1,426 but managed to win both the matches; actually after these 2 matches the team got quite popular here in Italy.

At the end of the 2017/2018 campaign the best team is Liverpool (England, CL finalist), with 635,29 points.
The second team in the ranking is Real Madrid (Spain, CL winners) with 465,22 points, and the third one is Roma (Italy, CL semifinalist) with 415,94 points.

Why is the spread between the 1st and the 2nd so large?

Liverpool had a starting quinquennial score almost half of Real one's (40,84 points vs. 75,02), so generally the English team had match coefficients much higher for every match played.

They started from the CL playoff round, therefore having two games more to gain points with. The playoff was against Hoffenheim, and Liverpool gained 38 points.

In the group stage, Real got around 110 points, while Liverpool around 175, especially because they defeated 7-0 and 3-0 Maribor, who had an almost equal starting score (40,44), thanks to their performances in the last 5 years in the European Cups (Liverpool took part in only 3 campaigns out of 5).

In the round of 16, Liverpool gained other 36 points over RM.

The quarter-final round was the actual turning point, because Liverpool won 3-0 and 2-1 against Manchester City, gaining around 180 points (RM got only 63 because they lost one match against Juventus).

The semifinals were slightly favorable for Real (75 points against 63), as of course was the final (41 against -4).

In the end, adding also all the bonuses, Real Madrid got 448,49 points, adjusted to 465,22 thanks to the final adjustment I made to avoid negative scores in the ranking.

The best team in Europa League was Marseille (France), who reached the final and finished in 5th position with 370,96 points.

The EL winner, Atletico Madrid (Spain), ended only at the 16th place with 267,36 points, because of the high starting quinquennial score (64,64 points, while Marseille had only 32,98).

    The complete ranking is here.
