Lol I think he was supposed to defend more but didn't do a good job of it. Shakespeare throwing in an extra forward when they had the lead backfired.
I don't expect LC to budge. They seem content with not selling despite the risks involved in that. It would be fantastic if they did and we get the deal done our way, but I'm not holding my breath.
Il Tempo (dunno how credible) says two things today: Roma have denied the links to Boateng and Mahrez has again put pressure on the LC hierarchy for a move. I'm guessing that's the reason why we didn't increase the bid for Mahrez. We are stopping at 35m because then we'd have some left over for a CB.

It's Austini. It's reliable. Mahrez is putting more pressure on LC to sell after Friday's game. Smentito l’interesse per #Boateng del #BayernMonaco#ASRoma #calciomercatohttps://t.co/97UHedAj6N— Pagineromaniste.com (@PagineRomaniste) August 13, 2017
LC had to know it was going to get to this. They haven't had another offer and Mahrez had been telling them he wanted to leave. He was a very good soldier up until this point and LC refusal to negotiate has to be frustrating for him. If Roma back out LC could end up getting less that what Roma offered.
They bought the guy for peanuts, he brought them a league title on peanut wages, they promised to let him go this year if he renewed last year, Mahrez has every right to push for a move. I think his problem is that he has a weak agent, its been months and we still don't know who he is, while its Mahrez making public statements. He should have demanded a release clause last summer.
To be honest, if he had a release clause after that amazing year it would probably have been something huge. Say 60m. It's still the middle of August so I have a gut feeling LC will reject our offer and hope someone jumps in at the last moment. That's based on how they've been behaving since we opened the talks. Whether their offer would be higher than Roma's is another question. I hope even PL clubs aren't that dumb to drop £50m on a wantaway player. We have to hope that Mahrez plays a deciding role for us in the next couple of days.
It would be a huge gamble by LC because the only other club that has shown any interest is Arsenal and Wenger is a cheap SoB. If Arsenal don't come through with an offer and Mahrez continues to become a problem for them Roma could very well lower their offer.
Release clauses are more related to the salary than performance. Even his new contract is not that high, he earns less than what Salah did at Roma. His great year gave him leverage, he could've earned double what he signed for, and LC couldn't pay him 5-6m net so they would have been forced to accept a low release clause. His agent is obviously very weak and LC are walking all over him. This is pretty much what happened with Roma and Pjanic, we couldn't match the 4M+ offers he got in other places so we had to put a release clause reflective of his 2.8M salary.
Actually Wenger confirmed this weak he isn't interested in Mahrez, he said he rates him as a player but has Ozil and others who play the same roles as Mahrez.
In that case Monchi should have told LC that come Monday he was lowering his offer by 5 mil. The situation is going to become toxic for LC so Roma might as well take advantage of it.
David Moresco @DavidMoresco·3 u Il fratello di #Mahrez:«Riyad non vorrebbe andare alla #ASRoma, ci andrà in assenza di altre offerte. La Serie A? Spazzatura» #calciomercato Alessandro Austini (Il Tempo) retweeted it
??? Mahrez spoke to the media that he wants to talk to Roma. We've spent what, 3 weeks now working on this deal? Unless Monchi is a complete idiot, this simply doesn't add up at all.
Who cares? I'm pretty sure most of our players would rather be playing at a top club in England. Until Serie A leaves the 80's, it's not going to be most player's first choice.
If LC do eventually decide to sell him, I like our chances. Mahrez wants CL football. None of the English teams in the CL have an opening for him. The only teams outside of the EPL who can spend 35-40m on him and offer CL football are PSG, Italian and Spanish teams. PSG/RM/Barca obviously have their eyes set on bigger talent, Atletico have a transfer ban, Sevilla/Monaco don't buy high, Juve aren't interested, Napoli's wings are already stocked with talent. Pretty much leaves us.
