And our old favorite Dempsey made a pretty good cameo appearance for the US last night. His pass to Altidore was a beaut. Instant impact! Dempsey with the beautiful assist to Altidore for the 1-0 lead. @ModeloUSA #ModeloSoccer #USAvCRC https://t.co/EKOrSUoUxC— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) July 23, 2017
I was there. Pretty cool to see Dempsey tie the record in his home state (although I'm not his biggest fan). The US looked a lot better but still don't great. Hopefully it's enough to beat Mexico/Jamaica on Wednesday.
exactly... that's like being Chinese and not liking Chairman Mao... ooops, wait a minute... that's like being...
I'm a Texan too and I don't like him. He's just an arrogant prick and the whole "Deuce" thing is just bananas. That being said, he is definitely been a game changer and knows where the goal is.
Yeah, like him as a player, but as a person? Not so much... of course, all this is based on what we see of him on TV, so about as meaningful as a fart in a windstorm.
It embodies the appalling hypocrisy of the English football media. There are so many examples I could choose, but Ryan Giggs is one that really sticks out. He screws his brother’s wife for the best part of a decade, but is still presented as a model pro and a good guy. Suarez does a few crazy things on the pitch while being a family man who never makes headlines for the wrong reasons off it, but is presented as a dirty foreigner who should be banned from football for life. There’s still a barely concealed strain of xenophobia in the English football press. We saw it again when Klopp took the players to salute the fans against West Brom last season. The media sh*tstorm that ensued beggared belief and much of it amounted to: “These bloody foreigners coming over here with their funny ways, infecting our football culture.”
John Terry is another example. a total piece of crap as a person, but big parts of the uk media continue to treat him like he's a saint.
To me just a different flavor of the same fetid sauce offered up by the U.S. sports media, traditionally they've glorified rednecks and general lowlifes and we all know how much press attention the furrin sports stars get. They're all appealing to the same audience - low education, low sophistication, etc.
low sophistication in the modern world = semi-mid sophistication. But, in reality, it's still like Clive James said about Dr. Zharkov - "they wouldn't know anti-matter from their elbow" ... and so, these press panderings to these strains of somewhat hidden humanity are quite natural, albeit ugly....
