In the past finishing second or third was a big difference in terms of CL qualification. This is why, upgrading squad was always a must for the management. Now that next year finishing second or fourth has same impact of qualifying to CL, the management is selling players. I think competition will be Juventus, Milan, Inter, Napoli , Roma for top four.
There is some chance they are selling players like Paredes (who Spalletti never really trusted and therefore ran De Rossi and Strootman into the ground) and Rudiger (who never established himself as Spalletti's preferred choice in a two man back line) because that's the only way they have enough money for Monchi to buy players that may better fit Di Francesco's 4-3-3 and also add depth? Salah seems to have wanted the EPL and he is still the only clear first choice starter if we're to play a 4-3-3 that's been sold. I agree that the extra CL spot means a little more room to take risks but we will need to see the balance at the end of the summer to decide that the club is cashing in and not going to spend the same way they have in the past -- which seems to have been pretty much every cent allowed under FFP.
He chose a bad time to do it? He likes to joke around and rag people, its all in the timing and the perfect time to do that was right now. Who honestly cares about people being up in arms on social media. It really doesn't matter if they cant some banter. I'm sure he like many of the senior players maybe a little annoyed as well but they understand we'll be signing good replacements.
Or you go to France to start scanning midlevel teams for the next guy and develop him...Naples Soccer bought one.
Is this our "why do we need Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood" equivalent? In terms of talent, its probably wider. At least Sherwood could play.
I don't think our management can go into the new season with this thought process. If anything, competition will be stiffer this season with the both the Milan clubs strengthening again. We should be looking at the market from the perspective of re-enforcing our status as Italy's second best club, and putting more distance between us and Napoli/the Milan clubs.
Unfortunately, the probability of that working out is close to 0, even though Monchi scouts are ravaging the french league.
Lol, you reminded me of the Serie A proven bias back then, the only thing that we got from that year is busting that myth. Other than Ninja and Benatia, none of our Serie A buys panned out, while most of our hits came from abroad.

There's always the next talent coming through. Theyll arrive in a season or two once they get the chance to play at a bigger side. We're almost in a limbo stage. Too big to play them as a starter and develop them but not yet big enough to match the bids they now attract after getting the playing time.
This is a first... Roma linked with Martial. http://www.forzaroma.info/calciomercato-as-roma/mercato-roma-suggestione-martial-per-lattacco/ Jesus Navas turned down Seville and Roma rumors surfacing again
lol, you beat me to it. I'd take the gamble if it was a loan/purchase deal and only if it was an option to purchase or an obligation based on performance.
Martial is impossible for like every reason imaginable. Man Utd won't sell, his price is too high, his wages are too high, why would he leave Man Utd to come to Roma, etc..
You make a really good point about being in a sort of no man's land regarding young talent: either too raw to not cost you a few points or out of our price range. Just look at Paredes. He may be a player that sells for €60m in a couple of seasons and it may have been a mistake to sell him. On the other hand, Roma may have picked up a few extra league points to really push Juve (or won the Europa or Coppa) if Spalletti had a player like Gonalons last seasons he actually trusted enough to not run De Rossi and Strootman into the ground. That would have meant Paredes played even less than he did though. People rave about Dortmund, Monaco etc etc and all their young talent but often overlook the poor seasons mixed in that would cause complete meltdowns in Rome.

Martial salary isn't that high, I think it's less than 4 mil. Also, the rumored about is 30-35 mil. He is way down the list for Man U.
Yea, he's a whiny bitch. I wish Roma would have made Napoli pay more.. even if that meant him sitting on the bench the entire year.
Roma really haven't made that much. If you consider that Salah's sale went to FFP, Pellegrini, Moreno and Karsdorp, that money is gone. We got 58 mil for Paredes and Rudiger, not counting potential bonus. Add to that the obligations on Peres, JJ and Rui.. it's not like Roma are sitting on a war chest.
https://www.transfermarkt.com/as-rom/transfers/verein/12/saison_id/2017\ so far purchased €64,85m sold €123,50m (including Mario Rui's impending sale) meaning we have €58,65m profit, with ~€30m going towards FFP, which means we only have €28,65m to spend, so nope, we're not sitting on a war chest
yea, none of this is accurate.. just a very rough estimate. Depending on when we had to pay the obligations then that money may have been part of the 54 mil deficit from last season. If that is the case then the entire amount from Paredes and Rudiger would be available. There is amortization, etc. Either way, the Salah money is not part of this budget as it was pre-July 1. Add Paredes and Rudiger money any money they budgeted for transfers.
