Thanks, Sandon for your organizational skills. I will be out of internet range soon, and would appreciate you taking over this thread until NCAA selections on Monday.
Does Denver have a chance? Only team to beat New Mexico, tied Washington on the road, but play in a pretty weak conference. They'd have to win both their last two this weekend in my opinion. 10-5-1 right now, I think 12-5-1 might do it, but probably not anything less. BTW - The West Region got 12 teams in last year.
Will try my best. Others are welcome to help. Duke just lost its ACC Tournament game to UVa 3-1 to fall to 14-5. Here's the updated list. Boston College (12-4-2) California (11-3-3)* Cal State Northridge (9-5-2)* Duke (14-5) Kentucky (11-5-3) Notre Dame (13-2-3) Portland (10-6-2)* Santa Clara (13-5)* Stanford (7-5-5)* St. Johns (10-5-4) South Carolina (11-6-1)* UCLA (11-3-2)* UNC-Wilmington (12-6-2) Washington (11-5-2)* Teams with an * next to their record have games remaining and their records will need to be updated.
Duke bites the dust in the ACC tourney and is invited to our pool. Boston College (12-4-2) California (11-3-3)* Cal State Northridge (9-5-2)* Duke (14-5-0) Kentucky (11-5-3) Notre Dame (13-2-3) Portland (10-6-2)* Santa Clara (13-5)* Stanford (7-5-5)* St. Johns (10-5-4) South Carolina (11-6-1)* UCLA (11-3-2)* UNC-Wilmington (12-6-2) Washington (11-5-2)*
That's a good question. Certainly winning their last two games will help as will the W over New Mexico. But, losing to Towson, UC Riverside and UNLV doesn't help their case. I would say their odds are very long and a home-and-away with Air Force this weekend will not be easy. But, there's no harm in submitting their name to the pool for consideration for an at-large bid. Boston College (12-4-2) California (11-3-3)* Cal State Northridge (9-5-2)* Denver (10-5-1)* Duke (14-5-0) Kentucky (11-5-3) Notre Dame (13-2-3) Portland (10-6-2)* Santa Clara (13-5)* Stanford (7-5-5)* St. Johns (10-5-4) South Carolina (11-6-1)* UCLA (11-3-2)* UNC-Wilmington (12-6-2) Washington (11-5-2)*
www.collegesoccernews.com has a pretty good summary of each conference tournament and possible at-large bids.
Well, the 1st round of the ACC tournament is complete, and the losers were VaTech, Clemson, Duke, and NC State. I think Clemson at 8-9-1 will not be competing for an at-large bid, and ditto for Va Tech at 9-10-1. Duke for sure should get get a bid at 14-5-0, and they have already been added to the list. That brings us to NC State at 8-8-2 after their loss to UNC. I think they needed a win last night, and maybe even a second win in the tournament to be considered ... so I'll let someone else nominate them. Any takers?
No. Too many good teams already on the bubble for a .500 team to get in. State needed to win last night to get consideration. I think any ACC team with a winning overall record gets in because of strength of schedule, so last night's loss was a killer for them. Too bad, too, because this State team has talent. In the past, State sucked because they didn't have good enough players. This year, they just under-achieved. Is that progress?
I officially nominate NC State. Earlier this week I posted on the Southern At Large Teams thread my analysis of the ACC teams and predicted that NC State is already in. Primarily because of its ACC membership. I have no idea how the Va Tech womens team can make its first appearance in the NCAA tournament this year, its first in ACC play, with an 11-8 record but an 8-0 blowout loss in its last match in the ACC tourny except for the high regard of the ACC within the selection committee. Ditto 8th place MD at 7-6-4. I will concede, however, that NC State is probably the ultimate bubble team. Maybe we'll see whether a winning record is an unofficial requirement to be selected. We're pretty sure that a losing record is disqualifying. Now we may see whether strength of conference canboost a team with a .500 record. I believe that NC State entered the ACC tournament last year 1 game above .500, won its first round match and therefore exited still 1 above .500 and made the field.
Well, aight then. Boston College (12-4-2) California (11-3-3)* Cal State Northridge (9-5-2)* Denver (10-5-1)* Duke (14-5-0) Kentucky (11-5-3) North Carolina State (8-8-2) Notre Dame (13-2-3) Portland (10-6-2)* Santa Clara (13-5)* Stanford (7-5-5)* St. Johns (10-5-4) South Carolina (11-6-1)* UCLA (11-3-2)* UNC-Wilmington (12-6-2) Washington (11-5-2)* A couple more teams will be added this afternoon once we get the rest of the results from the Big Ten and CUSA.
Their results were nearly identical last year, as is their schedule strength, but during the 2003 ACC tournament, they advanced over then #18 UNC in PK's I believe, then played #3 Maryland to a narrow 2-1 loss. I don't believe their record would have gotten them in otherwise, ACC or no. I don't think their ACC affiliation will be enough get them in this year.
Neither do I, but I'm not going to tell folks they can't nominate teams, provided they make a good case. I may not agree with the case, but that's for another thread! Once all the games are done Sunday, we'll take a look at the teams on this list and try and whittle down a guess to 26.
Penn State (10-4-7) gets into our pool after being eliminated by Northwestern 1-0 in OT in the Big Ten QFs. Boston College (12-4-2) California (11-3-3)* Cal State Northridge (9-5-2)* Denver (10-5-1)* Duke (14-5-0) Kentucky (11-5-3) North Carolina State (8-8-2) Notre Dame (13-2-3) Penn State (10-4-7) Portland (10-6-2)* Santa Clara (13-5)* Stanford (7-5-5)* St. Johns (10-5-4) South Carolina (11-6-1)* UCLA (11-3-2)* UNC-Wilmington (12-6-2) Washington (11-5-2)*
YES, Penn State is IN...I can sleep tonight...they have provided great pleasure for everyone this year and have achieved near greatne...errr...levelness...
Good to see Stanford as well...now there is a NAME...quite deserving...what is their record this year? Heck, what is their combined record over the last two years? Did they crack double-digit wins over two years? Curious? They SHOULD get in though because they are STANFORD...5 losses and 5 ties DO NOT matter if you are STANFORD...7 wins DO NOT matter if you are STANFORD. Looking forward to a Penn State V Stanford NCAA Division 1 Final...good TV...how many rounds of overtime can a game go and will they have to recycle players for the second go-around of penals... Good luck to both teams...quite deserving and well earned...
Univ or Rhode Island Rams loses in A-10 Quarterfinal to George Washington. Finish with a lot of wins at 12-8-1, but faired poorly in a middling conference. Do they get at-large consideration namely because of Sasha Gotsmanov, the nation's leading scorer?
Indeed. Welcome to the pool, Buckeyes. Boston College (12-4-2) California (11-3-3)* Cal State Northridge (9-5-2)* Denver (10-5-1)* Duke (14-5-0) Kentucky (11-5-3) North Carolina State (8-8-2) Notre Dame (13-2-3) Ohio State (10-6-2) Penn State (10-4-7) Portland (10-6-2)* Santa Clara (13-5)* Stanford (7-5-5)* St. Johns (10-5-4) South Carolina (11-6-1)* UCLA (11-3-2)* UNC-Wilmington (12-6-2) Washington (11-5-2)*
I may as well make my case for CONNECTICUT...they are CONNECTICUT: *They are standing at #22 in the country * They have an unbelievable won-loss record * I think they lost or tied every ranked team they played this year...that should get them in right there. * I believe they will have to go through Notre Dame, St. Johns and...oops...maybe not. I am hopeful for a Final Four consisting of PENN STATE CONNECTICUT MICHIGAN STANFORD ...all of these teams are highly deserving...more so than any smaller conference tourny winner because they are who they are... Rankings don't mean anything unless you beat a ranked team, then you get all the credibility in the world (NU over IU) (New Mexico over IU) Why should Connecticut get in? I know this thread has not listed UCONN but it has listed the others...and UCONN is #22 in the country with 'significant wins' where?
Ohio State ? Does Ohio State have any wins worthy of giving them a bid? A win over Penn State as their only ranked opponent is nothing to get them into the tournament. Coming out of a very weak Big Ten minus IU of course, they lost both opportunities they had against ACC teams and lost in the first round of their conference tournament. I have to say take Ohio State off the list, no history and no schedule. Unfortunately I have to say UConn deserves to be on there
Just updated the list to include UCLA's win tonight over San Diego. Boston College (12-4-2) California (11-3-3)* Cal State Northridge (9-5-2)* Denver (10-5-1)* Duke (14-5-0) Kentucky (11-5-3) North Carolina State (8-8-2) Notre Dame (13-2-3) Ohio State (10-6-2) Penn State (10-4-7) Portland (10-6-2)* Santa Clara (13-5)* Stanford (7-5-5)* St. Johns (10-5-4) South Carolina (11-6-1)* UCLA (12-3-2)* UNC-Wilmington (12-6-2) Washington (11-5-2)*
UCONN isn't listed because UCONN is still alive in the Big East tournament. In order to make the list, a team must have finished their season...by completing their scheduled games (like an IVY league team that doesn't have a tournament) or lost in the conference tournament. Once UCONN loses, they should make the list.
I had posted this earlier - but no response. Does anyone think this could even be a bubble team?
