Nielson survey advice

Damn fools chose me as a Neilson survey recipient. I gotta write down what TV shows I watch all week.

I have ghetto-cable - no espn, espn2 etc. But they don't know that - all they know is that I have cable.

So I'll be scanning through TV guide and writing down all the soccer games.

But what's the deal with the MLS playoffs? What are they on - this InDemand thingee and the other playoff packages? Are they cable, digital cable, satellite, what?

I don't want to write down something that's too obviously a lie..

    What do I write down?

    Sweet. Hooray for skewed statistics.

    InDemand = pay per view

    (1) Why don't you get cable with ESPN???

    (2) Why help out foreign leagues? Just stick to MLS and US Nats.

The first one is an ineffable mystery to all of us, and will probably remain so.

As to # 2: Because 6 months out of the year, there's no MLS, so I don't think it would harm anything to inflate FSW's ratings, too.

For Kries Sake, at the very least, write down the MLS Cup. Does the survey go through Oct 20?

    1) stolen cable = no espn. But they don't know that.

    2) I have a hunch that any jump in soccer ratings, no matter what league, would lead to more MLS or more $ paid to MLS/SUM.

Is the PayPerView regularly available? I can always write that down.

I dunno when the Neilson thing will arrive or how long it runs for - hopefully in the MLS Cup timeframe.

Any other Non-Soccer-Related requests while I'm at it?

The easiest lie to remember is the one you don't tell. Just write down what you watch or tape. Just be sure to watch a lot of soccer.

You know, you can also include things that you watch away from home.

So, if you go to a bar to watch a soccer game (or look up and notice something on television while in a bar), I think you could count that.

Just tell them you only watch soccer, porn, and Teletubbies. That will really make them feel like they don't want to touch your survey form. :)

So how many people do one of these forms represent? Like 10,000?

If it is 10,000, then it was only a matter of time before someone on Bigsoccer became one.

And it happens to be the one person in the United States without ESPN. Ugh!

True, but he won't get ESPN! So we need him to lie.

to poopypants (the last man without ESPN):

Let us find the happy lie medium. Don't start including a zillion FSW games. You'll never, never, never be able to keep track of it. Just say you watch the weekly MLS game. Go to the mls web site and write down that game. Very simple.

Does anyone else smell a rat?

I have stolen cable, yet Nielsen knows I have cable.

Either this is a flat out lie or you won't have stolen cable for long since you reported to a TV survey company that you have cable!

    Hmmm....

He's either a rat or he's trying to win something on "America's Dumbest Criminals" -- which is probably the only show he gets on his stolen basic cable. I mean, if you're gonna steal cable, not that I advocate that sort of activity, you might as well go all the way and get ESPN, FSW and Skinamax. Sheesh....

    America's Dumbest Criminal? That's me!

I'm sure Neilson will call my cable company to verify that I'm on their records.

And I'm sure my local cable company will check that my apartment in the apartment building is on their list.

And if they do check up and disconnect me, it would be impossible to reconnect it.

Don't assume that Neilson does not know what your cable options are. They have collected a lot of information about you before they selected you to be a survey subject.

Well, Poopypants can just tell them he went to a bar or a friend's house to watch the games, right?

Nope you only count what you watch on the "main" television of the household.

That means what you watch in bars doesn't count. What you tape doesn't count. What you watch on the second or third televisions in the house do not count. Or thats how it was when I got this same survey ~10 years ago.

Great, Nielson picks a soccer fan when MLS nearly vanishes from the weekly TV schedule. There's only one game on national TV or cable in the month of October (the MLS Cup). Too bad they didn't pick an earlier month.

This is nothing unusual. They also picked me a month before MLS season started and in between 2 USMNT games! Only soccer I could find on TV at that time was 2 CL games on ESPN2.

They count now. There is a section for taped programs and I received 3 diaries for as many TV's (one left unused).

    yep, arrived today

Great, I get to track October 10-16th.

There's probably no MLS games, or am I missing something?

Only the standard weekend Mexican games, and some crappy Euro qualifiers.

    So what am I watching?
    England?
    Italy?
    Ireland?
(Not scotland, they'd know it was a lie if I put that down. Even if it was on TV)

    Crap crap crap.

    Re: Re: Nielson survey advice

Indemand is not pay per view with my cable system. We get them through the MLS shootout package which is a yearly fee for all games.

Skew the system. You have to make sure your local provider offers the games that you are 'watching" however.

i did one once, but had to write down as I went...not beforehand...that is weird if I read another post correctly. I fueged a bit too...considering I worked in broadcast:)
