People saying Glad will be exposed with pace.....ummmm Herrera was getting jogged past. 4-3-3 for sure. Same as game 3. Control and counter. Switch to 4-4-2 later if need be. Jones is going to be so important this game. If he can plug the hole and make them go wide and cross, we will win.
I think for us to win, we need to do it in regulation, going to extra time without the proper rest is not to our favor. Venezuela is a solid defensive team, they haven't scored in bunches against tough opponents. I think our problem is not getting decent chances to score and as the game progresses into extra time, the chances that we get tired and mess up on defense may come back to bite us.
You don't need pace if you have positioning.... I think it'd be silly to have a college right back play against Penaranda, who had ~350 combined minutes in Serie A and La Liga this year.
Peñaranda didn't have a great season but I saw him play several times last year when he was with Granada. He was a real handful against teams like Barça and Atletico. He's tall and strong but also has the speed to get in behind and shield off defenders. I distinctly remember him giving Pique and Dani Alves fits in one game. Lennon and (hopefully) Glad will need to put in a strong effort to contain him. Their striker, Cordova, looks like a younger Salmon Rondon. Yangel Herrera has been impressive for NYCFC when he's received minutes.
That's how Herrera got those 2 yellows. Being out of position getting beat and having to take down 2 players from behind. Glad is much better at positioning and for me is pretty quick for his size. For what Glad lacks in crossing that Herrera has he cancels that out in what he brings with his head and set pieces. Then he's much better at everything else. Positioning, Tactics, spacing, defending etc.You can just see one is a starting professional while the other is a good college player. If Ramos starts Herrera over Glad I will truly question his coaching ability and think we will lose because of it.
------------------------- Klinsmann ------------------------- ---- Glad ---------- CCV ------- EPB ------ Acosta ---- ---------------------------- Jones ---------------------------- -- Lennon -- Williamson ------ Adams ------- DLT --- --------------------------- Sargent --------------------------- I don't think it's rocket science. Keep it compact in the middle. Force the Venezuelans to play in crosses against EPB and CCV. We don't have their technical ability but we could be dangerous in three areas ... (1) set pieces - Show me 5 guys that can match up with Glad, EPB, CCV, Jones, and Sargent on a Lennon free kick. (2) Lennon cross (3) Adams springing a counter attack It's gonna be old time US soccer. We're going to play it out wide from the back. We're going to hope for a great Lennon to Sargent cross. We're going to hope to counter and with this group we may have to get lucky. HOWEVER, I'm excited and expecting a competitive result. EPB has been the best center back in this tournament and CCV has still yet to concede from the run of play in two U20 tournaments. First goal wins.
If I remember correctly CCV started all the group games in 2015 and we gave up run of play goals to Myanmar and 2x Ukraine.
If someone doesn't have access to FS2 you can always get the sling trial, my stream is usually good on the firestick.
Yep, and if we win, it will be the farthest we've ever gone in this tournament... with the exception of 1989 where we made the semis in Saudi with Steve Snow. However, as there were only 16 teams in that tournament there was no round of 16, so we still only won one knockout match against Iraq. I really, really want to win this game so badly... let's at least make the semis, and at least get a medal of some sort. We've never finished higher than 4th in any of the major youth tournaments, and only done that once at each level (U17s, U20s + Olympics) ... I really, really want to better that at least once!
My curious and yes, skeptical mind asks how a "lesser" South American country can develop a team with these attributes? Is this some kind of golden Venezuelan generation of youngsters? What sort of pedigree does Venezuela have at youth level to lead to this apparently very formidable side?
On further thought I am not sure this is the match for Jones. He's a liability when it comes to bad turnovers a la Mike Bradley and this was evident against I believe it was Senegal. A fast technical team pressing him while he dribbles too much in front of the backline will become an unmanageable mess. Maybe we need a different plan if he is going to be the 6. Against any other team left in the event he would be fine but the way VEN play is anathemic to his game and our CBs are good at cutting out aerial balls but clever ground passes I am not so sure they can put all those fires out.
I'm appalled that, for practically the first time, I have to say something nice about Cox Cable -- the only option where I live. Reliable FS2 HD with a pretty standard HD package. Maybe I'll have stop badmouthing them to the neighborhood. Or not.
It could be. I don't know. I am sure other posters can give you the scouting report on them. @ussoccer97531 probably has the low down on their XI.
Glad has played against a Serie A club. He defended well against Inter Milan in a friendly last year. He had to mark Mauro Icardi in that game
I found an interesting article about Steven Snow from the MLS website. Does anyone remember watching him? Was he an 80's/90's kind of player, poacher that couldn't score at an elite level or was he a special prospect? It's clear he scored a bazillion goals and at least in terms of raw production was probably the best forward we ever produced until Donovan (who wasn't entirely a forward of course). Did anyone see him during his heyday ('89-'92)? How good was he? https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2014...-snow-usmnt-world-cup-hero-who-never-was-word
Don't get mad get Glad. Been wanting to say that. Adding his height to the rest leaves match-up problems on set piecesfor Venezuela and that's our biggest advantage.
I know a little about Farinez (GK), Herrera (CM), Soteldo (10), Penaranda (winger/striker) and Cordova (CF). We played them in a youth tournament about a year ago in Spain where we were playing mostly fringe players (besides McKennie, Vom Steeg and one or two others), and they outplayed us. I was pretty surprised, given Venezuela usually isn't very good, but this team is. Maybe they've improved or maybe its just a Golden Generation.
