Really is a great metaphor in that picture. Sugarman spends years looking for that last missing piece of the puzzle that might make the Union great. If only he'd look in the mirror and realize that it's on him...
Salary Report is out. Top 5: Bedoya @ 1,197,250 guaranteed Edu @ $818,750 guaranteed Ilsin, Jr. @ 518,333 guaranteed Simpson @ 508,333 guaranteed Haris @ 505,008 guaranteed http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/...17-salaries-Jay-Simpson-Haris-Medunjanin.html
Ilsinho at $518k. Simpson at $508k. Edu at $818k. Lol. I think I see part of the reason why this team sucks. They have the 12th highest payroll, too. Which is surprising.
If they were good players (lololol) these wouldn't be terrible deals. The DP cap hit is only around $400k.
Consider over the years with M'Bolhi, Kleberson, Anderson...how much money has the Union pissed away on high pay guys that just sat around doing nothing? Incredible, really.
Every team has high priced players that don't pan out. The Union are not unique in that regard. The Union probably are better off than other teams over the years because the Union tend to sign less high-priced players. Does anyone know whether there is disability insurance in MLS like there is in other sports? In other words, I have heard (but never confirmed) that an insurance company is paying Edu the difference between his cap hit and his DP salary because he is injured such that the net effect to the Union is zero (the league pays the base salary, not the Union) other than the insurance premiums. Does anyone have definitive information on this? @Boyertown2003 ?
I wish I knew, but could never confirm. I do know that Edu's first setback, the one from last winter, happened with independent trainers, not anyone related to the Union. That was something I originally had wrong.
No idea if they carry insurance of that type, but it certainly would make sense to do so. It would also give an additional reason not to buy him out. No insurance would mean paying two salaries instead of one. (buyout plus new guy, since there isn't much reason to buyout if you aren't getting a replacement) With insurance it's two salaries instead of zero. I'll say I'm good with JS being a cheapskate in the either case, why pay when you don't have to, especially since one injured player shouldn't be breaking the team. While I'm sure it's contributing to their suckage, it's far from their worst of many worse problems.
I'm super surprised by Gooch's salary. Good for him taking a paycut to get back playing. Bedoya, Simpson, Edu, Ilsinho all overpaid and that's $3 million that could be better spent elsewhere. I get your point but it's leaving the team hamstrung in the salary cap by flushing max salary dollars down the toilet
Juan Giego Gonzalez, Soumare, Vitoria, Valdes (to a degree), and perhaps Nikolov depending on his salary. I understand your sources have dried up, but is there any sense that a new DP will come in during the summer?
If there is insurance, it's another way this team monetizes the salary cap. Just like when Fred was a "player coach".
Maybe they're playing another form of moneyball where winning isn't the objective, and the objective is Sugarman maximizing his ROI while siphoning money off the league
That's sort of how I feel about the use of all that TAM on Jay Simpson. "Oh, it's the league's money? Then ******** it, go ahead."
Not that there's even a snowball's chance in hell, but still ... http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/...s-plaene-mit-selke-johannsson-und-europa.html
ArJo to MLS? Teams are talking to Dynamo about the No. 1 spot in allocation order. That, and new GAM/TAM info, here: https://t.co/e0JslQz0kC— Sam Stejskal (@samstejskal) May 5, 2017 This window closes on Monday, May 8th. Next window opens two months later, on Monday, July 10th. What would you give up to acquire Houston's #1 spot in the allocation order?
Well, we gave Chicago a 1st to move up one spot for Bedoya so let's start with our 1st round pick in 2018. Oh, wait. We what? For who?
