Now that I've watched that Wondo gif about 20 times, I'm not sure why everyone has always thought that that was such an easy gimme shot. The ball was bouncing. He had to take it off the half-volley. By the time he can get his foot on the ball, the Belgium GK is literally two yards in front of him, looming large and coming in strong. If Wondo had tried to kick it lower, the GK most likely would have blocked it. His only chance would have been to try and keep it as low as possible and get it under the keeper, but very hard to do that when the ball is rising off the bounce. High degree of difficulty, I don't care how close he is to goal.
If it were that hard then he should of touched it to Dempsey. I'd also like to add that Landy Cakes wouldn't have missed that shot. #EffKlinsmann
Honestly, if he had hit his volley directly into the keeper, nobody would be talking about today because it would have been a save on an "on-frame" shot. If it's "on-frame," it at least has some kind of chance of going in. He didn't though. His shot never even had close to a chance of scoring because he took it so badly. It's like how you never want to leave a putt short in golf. No matter how good you read the green and how good your line is, you had a 0% chance of making the putt.
I agree that was no sitter - though watching that replay again and again, that angle makes it look like he could have headed it. Anyway, Wondo misses. Pretty frequently. He's a good finisher, but what he's been amazing at is getting chances.

I hate to play the game of "what if", but Wondo had one job, and that was it. He did have options - shoot it low (maybe hitting the keeper), tap it to Dempsey for an easy lay-up. I know I couldn't do it, but I don't get paid the big bucks...
It was classic Wondo to be in a great position in the opposing box, and it was also classic Wondo to sky a perfectly good goal scoring opportunity. I don't think you could find a more perfect play to show Wondo's range as a player.

Between the ball bouncing and Courtois cutting off his angles, I knew that was a high degree of difficulty shot the very first time I saw that replay three years ago. Thought Wondo should have laid if off for Dempsey, but still doesn't deserve the s*** he gets for it today.
