No, we haven't had this situation before. It's actually low-hanging fruit among the things we can criticize Trump about.
I think if I were a US taxpayer I'd be OK with the family remaining local (so not having to change schools for kids etc). And I think the Federal government thus has the obligation to pay for security. I would be completely unhappy with the Mar-a-lago / golf club thing - its indefensible both as conflict of interest, and flamboyant use of tax payer funds. Also in general, i don't agree with the defence that Trump is a unique president Why should the rules be changed for him? If you don't want to comply with the rules, don't run for President.
And anyway optics matter Why does he need to fly around so flamboyantly on the tax payer dime to play golf?
Socrates predicted this 2400 years ago. We are so brainwashed that we are used to thinking very higly of democracy. But Socrates made the point that voting in an election is a skill and not a random intuition. And like any skill it needs to be taught systematically to people. Only the ones who had thought about issues rationally and deeply should be allowed to vote. We have forgotten this distinction between intellectual democracy and a democracy by birthright. We have given the vote to all without connecting it to wisdom. And we have preferred to think of democracy as an unambiguous good - rather than as something that is only ever as effective as the education system that surrounds it. Socrates also predicted where this would inevitably lead to: demagoguery. So historically speaking thats nothing new.
I know at least two people who voted leave but have regretted it ever since. One is a life-long marxist who was thrown out of the labour party back in the 80's but has realised that Jezza's version of labour is more likely to lead to permanent tory rule, (he thought the disruption would mean the left would come storming back into power and we'd become a marxist utopia ). The other is a bit of a dozy cow who thought, as I say, it was a typical 'euro vote' and nothing would happen even if we DID vote to leave Actually, I roll my eyes at that last one but, to be fair, that is still a possibility because the euro area is so fragile they don't really need any shocks than is necessary. Since the depth of the banking crisis the US economy has recovered about 15%, the UK about 8-9%, the EU, as a block, hasn't grown at ALL so it would be more sensible to just leave most things, (tariffs, banking arrangements, customs arrangements, etc.), largely as they are. Of course, as you fellas and we have shown, people sometimes don't do the 'sensible' thing, do they Having said that I think most people just want it sorted now one way or the other. The disruption itself is doing damage.
On this side of the pond, we keep a tally... https://twitter.com/trump_regrets Really sorry I voted for you , just embarrassing already let the rich and poor bite the bullet already F##k the wall— Samuel Albert (@salbertzz) March 19, 2017 842414662230634496 is not a valid tweet id @realDonaldTrump why in the hell would you and your money hungry cronies just did something that can never be forgiven and I voted for you.— David E Lewis (@ThaBuzzKill) March 18, 2017 You're an embarrassment of the highest order. I think we've spent those about 3 times now. Mind you, when we get rid of the jocks there'll be another £10Bn p/a to top it up so maybe it will. Of course, whether there really are any savings to be made is another matter. My guess is, probably not.
This is highly disturbing. Just heard Fake News CNN is doing polls again despite the fact that their election polls were a WAY OFF disaster. Much higher ratings at Fox— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 20, 2017 It's standard Trump to be sure, but it's still not right.
Trump's war on the press/truth will end in victory, and thus the U.S. occupying an alternate reality, as for example North Korea does (although presumably not so extreme), or in abject defeat. The result is up to us.
I dunno, man. His approval ratings are garbage, and after two years, blaming Hillary and Obama isn't going to fly with his supporters. Let's see how the repeal bill does in the Senate.
