Here are covers from a European perspective, only the international ones mentioned ;-) Hermes House Band - I will survive (biggest party song ever! ;-) ) Dick Brave and The Backbeats - all songs they made (do you like Rock'n Roll?) Placebo - Running up that hill The Donots - We're not gonna take it The Brown Derbies - In you'r Eyes ( A capella) Try some, think you'll like them... ;-)
From the other end of the spectrum: The Guardian's 10 Worst Cover Songs. No. 1: 1. Duran Duran '911 Is A Joke' Glad to say, never heard it.
So what were they trying to achieve then ? I like some Floyd lyrcis, but they get bogged down in the music which is impossible to move too. I reckon Kylie would do a good cover of Mother or Hey You. A Pin Floyd dance album would be awesome
I don't think so Frieslander, I've encountered Mr Rambler before and I'm afraid he tries to like good music but no matter how much he listens to it "The Wall" will never sound as good as "Saturday night fever" to him. On the subject on covers though, I love Dylan yet many of his songs are better when covered by others. Although I'm not sure a version of "tangled up in blue" would work if given a remix by Fatboyslim before you suggest it Rambler.
The greatest cover song has to be the Boss' Because the Night. Patty Smith and 10,000 Maniacs and the great Charlottesville bar band, Rude Buddha. Of course, the Patty Smith version is the one I hear in my head, so when Bruce does it live, it sounds like a cover, so he gets double points for covering his own song. Something is pretty similar with Elvis Costello's Girls Talk, which was covered by Linda Ronstadt and Dave Edmunds. Both are so good, Elvis' sounds like the cover. Linda Ronstadt also did a pretty good cover of Alison.
as right now this is the cover that i enjoy Hava Nagila (Christmas Arrangement) by Me First & the gimme gimmes. i really like most of the cover that Phish does live. Like terripan station by the grateful dead
1969 - Sisters of Mercy (Iggy & The Stooges) Love Will Tear Us Apart - Swans (Joy Division) Just Like Heaven - Dinosaur Jr. (The Cure) Indian Summer - Luna (Beat Happening)
I like "Ballad of Evermore" ( Led Zeppelin ) by The Lovemongers from the "Singles" soundtrack. It's cleaner than the original, and a replica, not a new take. The mandolin part is excellent. From "Beat The Retreat", the Richard Thompson covers album, I like "I Misunderstood" by Dinosaur Jr. Jennifer Warnes "First We Take Manhattan" ( Leonard Cohen ) from "Famous Blue Raincoat"
Since this is a cover songs thread, I have a question. Is the new Goo Goo Dolls song "Give A little Bit" a cover? It sounds like a classic rock song, but I can't think of who it might've been by originally. Now that I think of it, does anyone know who covered Phil Collin's song "In The Air Tonight" that ESPN was playing during the playoffs? For some reason I kinda liked it. And a side note, Marilyn Manson did a good job with "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode or however you spell it. (I think that's the band...)
I really like the Van Morrison / Roger Waters vesion on the "live" Wall. I don't know if it's better than the original but I think it's the best song on that CD.
The original is by Supertramp, and I heard the cover for the first time Thursday PM. It's not bad, but the original's way better. Has anyone mentioned Cheap Trick's cover of "Ain't That A Shame" yet?
Take On Me - Reel Big Fish (A-Ha) Tainted Love - Shades Apart (Soft Cell covered it and I can't remember who did the original) Supernaut - 1000 Homo DJ's (Black Sabbath) That's A Lie - Too Much Joy (LL Cool J) Speed Racer - Sponge Ziggy Stardust - Bauhaus (Bowie) Tears of a Clown - English Beat (Smokey Robinson) Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm (Michael Jackson) Faith - Limp Bizkit (George Michael) And somebosy mentioned Just Like Heaven by Dinosaur Jr., which is excellent.
Oops, I forgot two, actually, both by the same band. Absolutely Sweet Marie - Jason & the Scorchers (Bob Dylan) 19th Nervous Breakdown - Jason & the Scorchers (Rolling Stones)
Any band that does a Dylan song. Jimi Hendrix - all along the watch tower Guns N Roses - knocking on heavens door Byrds - My back pages Manfred Man - Kim the escomo (may not be real name)
