Really… How about the continued use of even benign Native American names by multiple teams in different sports…the names are sometimes accompanied by crude caricaturish logos…chief wahoo anyone…peoples ethnically cleansed off the continent now grinning sports mascots… Then we have out and out racial / ethnic slurs…fighting irish…or the popular redskins… All of those teams however established an identity on the field of play that made the offensive names less objectionable… We're in the process of doing the same with a far…far less objectionable name than the ones cited above…and many others actually...
I have the not completely up to date SI web page with all(?) announced 2017 home and away unis bookmarked on my Mac… It just occurred to me that Atlanta United has a home uni reminicent of some of the old MetroStars unis and an away uni reminiscent of the RBNY home uni… None of this would mean anything except that I remember the new club a few weeks ago invited fans to trade in their jerseys / scarfs from other MLS teams to signify they were now all in with the new hometown team…and in the photo of the bin into which fans deposited the now obsolete gear they showed a RBNY Metro scarf or jersey on top of the pile… I'm now starting to consider the possibility that due to transplantism we actually have quite a following in the greater Atlanta area…or used to lol...not at all sure about this but it just occurred to me looking at the SI photo… http://www.si.com/planet-futbol/photo/2017/02/17/2017-mls-uniforms-jerseys-kits-away-home
Really, the worst? I presume you are not saying "Red Bulls," absent context, is the worst since the structure of color+entity is quite prevalent (Red Devils, White Sox, etc.). Judging by your last sentence, I'm guessing that you find the name awful because there are owned by and branded as an extension of a corporate entity. But it's not like they are alone in that respect either. Off the top of my head there's Bayer Leverkusen, Cruz Azul, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, etc. (actually I believe there are a handful in the K League like that). While I'm not sure I'd personally want to support a corporately branded club, of the ones I listed I'd say that Red Bulls is probably the least offensive.
We lucked out in the dubious category of corporately branded clubs…our owner has both a corporate name with clear sports crossover potential…and sells a product that while not exactly healthy isn't in any case some evil even human rights offender… Check out Bayer / IG Farben's conduct during the demonic genocidal nazi period…not sure Leverkusen fans are demanding a name change to distance the club from Bayer's criminal past...
That Red Bulls fan is by far the angriest poster on Bigsoccer. @zensum lay off the high caffeine energy drinks that adorn your hideous jerseys.
In the NYCFC/HOU preseason match, NYCFC wore matching blue shorts with this top. I'm officially in "I'll believe it when I see it" mode with these shorts. (And hoping that we see them often - would be a nice pop of color in our red/blue league.)
Speaking of which, TFC might officially unveil their new primary kit at their breakfast for season seat holders on Feb. the 24th. Likely going to be red from head to toe and boring.
According to team president and staff, the AUFC kit stems from two things - An advance knowledge the colors would be predominantly red and black so as to match the Falcons and to fit within the Mercedes Benz Stadium design motif, and an homage to prominent traditional club. In this case they settled on AC Milan. They've been pretty heavy handed, but honest, in their desire to glom onto the historic brands and customs of the European game in their efforts to make the team feel older than it is and/or less of a novelty. You can debate whether or not it's working but that was their intent from pretty much day 1.
Can't debate that…whatever they're doing is working beyond anyone's expectations…it's not outside the realm of possibility that the impressive downsizing of the new stadium might be a temporary measure… As a fan of a different team and not following developments closely…though I did work in Atlanta for awhile…I'm keeping an open mind about how big this team could be… Wanted the league to be there no doubt...but never expected this...
+1 RSL had unveiled a red kit with blue shorts in 2016 and then went on to NEVER wear the blue shorts with the red kit, not even once.
I don't think any of us did. Still no promises for what next year holds but everything realized thus far is way beyond my expectation. Loving it! This town so very badly needs something positive to embrace for a sporting identity, and I would love for AUFC to become part of that solution.
2017 MLS uniform critique: Every team's jerseys for the new season http://www.si.com/planet-futbol/photo/2017/02/17/2017-mls-uniforms-jerseys-kits
. . . except they don't yet critique every team, just promise to do so as more are announced. Fair warning.
Word in the yard is............... Columbus' new kit will have a new sponsor also. Waiting for that kit drop personally to either blow the league out or have us all go...Oh Columbo!
Someone from another forum that I follow was at an exclusive event and saw the new kit. Apparently it's a yellow base with black checkered side panels on the shirt.
