I'm not opposed to re-using the number. That press release is silly. Jermaine wouldn't know Cobi from Tab Ramos from Preki.
I bet he does. Cobi was one of best field players for USMNT in 98 WC when we played Germany. JJ was almost certainly closely following.
I'm actually with management on this. Retiring numbers is a mistake. We can't retire the classic numbers so we end up retiring Cobi's jersey and not Landon's. There's no logic to it. The problem is, once you've made the mistake, how do you reverse it? You can give the number to some backup player and hope no one notices, but that feels wrong. Even though it is unlikely that Jones will be a notable Galaxy player, he was quality and is part of the national team, so it's a little more respectful.
Seriously, there will never be a better chance to undo the number retirement. A Jones with dreads who wears #13 for the USMNT? Brilliant!
How come we hear from Jermaine and Cobi about the number announcement but not the club? Did the club make an official announcement?
