Gilbert offers Wayne County new jail, courts in swap for Gratiot site Detroit Free Press The amounts of money being thrown at this deal are staggering. On top of wanting to build a billion dollar soccer/entertainment complex in downtown, Gilbert wants to build a $420 million jail/court complex in exchange for the land. I'm not sure the county will approve the deal, but if they do, I don't see how MLS says no to an expansion team in Detroit. And it looks like Gilbert wants to get it done quickly, wanting a deal done by February 20.
its a great vision, not just for soccer in detroit, but also for the whole city- its a hell a lot of money and i think- if it comes off- will be a terrific endorsement for the growth and potential for soccer in NA and how it can bring significant community change-- if they have the money, how can detroit and MLS ignore the vision? it seems like San Diego is promoting the same idea- a soccer stadium to change a community- we all know that soccer is a lot more than just a sport
Scary stuff. I wish him all the best! As most fans, one would hope the league is not rigged now but it definitely was from 1996 until at least fairly recently. Never heard of them but I'm putting my faith in Jesse!
lol gotta laugh when someone thinks building a 420 million dollar jail is a great vision to help change a community. the residents of wayne county/detroit must be privately praying this deal happens.
It was only "rigged" in the sense that certain teams in big markets had first dibs on "marketable" players. This is the same reason Patrick Ewing went to the Knicks instead of the Sacramento Kings (who had better lottery odds). "For the good of the league." It didn't mean that Noel "Open Bar" Kenny decided to call/not call a PK to influence a game in someone's favor. That stuff was based purely on incompetence. Besides, the Metros always sucked, no matter how many breaks the league gave them
.....because no one complains about the horrible refs anywhere else in the world. Yeah, I know, of course everyone else complains it's just that MLS is ten times worse! Got it.
This is a GREAT deal for Wayne County and the City of Detroit! So I guess we'll see how important politics and graft are to the entrenched parties. Particularly Wayne Co. If Gilbert's Rock Ventures Group controls the project there is much less room for corruption. Which is probably why the County will turn it down. They will be looking for a much broader shake-down. I hope I'm wrong.....
As I recall Quakes GM Galexi Lalas' explanation, the Quakes lost Landon Donovan's rights because darnit they'd used half an allocation to acquire a green and typically injured Rico Clarke. Nothing to do with Galaxy brass and adidas flying Landon in a private jet and telling him there would be no 2005 Quakes, and if he didn't love Germany there'd be a fat and glorious role for him at Home Depot Center as Galaxy poster boy and the face of American Soccer. That's not tampering, that's sharing a vision. Like Alexi shared the Galaxy's vision. I still remember Sunil addressing supporters at the '98 MLS Cup saying the league isn't in the business of trying to set-up a NY/LA final, nudge nudge wink wink. That's a paraphrase but it was a good line, he got some laughs. Because it was still intimate, and we were in on something fragile and special. We shared the vision. The great thing about that budding Quakes dynasty was it kept happening despite the league's best/least efforts. So they took Donovan, beat us with that stick then moved the team to Houston, where they thought they could get more Mexidollars. It was the time when everyone had to share the Lieweke/AEG vision, or there wouldn't be a league.
Or it could be that his contract was never their property in the first place. He was only ever in SJ on loan, and was under contract to Leverkusen the whole time.
Landon came out of the AEG/LA Galaxy's offices only 2-3 weeks after the Quakes 2004 season stating "he hadn't been more sure of anything in his entire life"....When he went to Germany it was already understood that he would only go for a short period and come back to play with LA in time for the 2005 season. As it was , his stay lasted 6 weeks total. It wasn't even enough time to get homesick. Aside from knowing people close to the organization at that time who told me the facts of what transpired, even a complete fool can see that move was totally rigged and orchestrated.
Sounds like you're talking about the 1999 MLS Cup Final. It would also explain all the trophies the MetroStars won...
The league is rigged you say. How many MLS Cup championships have the MetroStars/Red Bull been a part of in 20 seasons?
I never even mentioned NY but how many cups were both LA & NY set up to win? Both clubs have been given every opportunity under the sun to win an MLS Cup especially when comparing them to every other club. Just because NY never got it right doesn't mean they didn't have their chances to win. Just look at their all time all star rosters. That Landon to LA move was in fact rigged. Maybe a match wasn't fixed (that we know of) but they fixed themselves into winning the league each season he was on the team and they did win because of him. I'm surprised there would even be a doubt about that.
Funny to think it could very well be NYCFC and LAFC that finally realize the dream. I understand all the chop and change of Metro failure, but Red Bull doesn't seem to want to stick to a winning formula either.
