Rookies, refs, 'keepers up for awards
    By**Jason Halpin**/**MLSnet.com Staff

Finalists for three more end-of-year awards were announced Monday by Major League Soccer. The nominees for Gatorade Rookie of the Year, MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and Official Sports International Referee of the Year will be of little surprise to observers of the league.

This year's Rookie of the Year nominees have all garnered headlines this year. D.C. United's Freddy Adu, the New England Revolution's Clint Dempsey and the Columbus Crew's Chad Marshall have all played important roles in their respective teams' success this season...

If Freddy wins this ... the league should be ashamed.

Couldn't agree with you more. If he's even half of what he's hyped to be, he'll win enough awards soon enough, but right now he's nothing more than a decent role player who has a lot of potential.

If you pulled the 3 nominees out of the lineups for their teams this year, you'd have gaping holes where Marshall and Dempsey were, but for Adu, it would merely mean more minutes for Esky, Moreno and a few other guys.

Freddy, your time will come, but it hasn't yet.

I had no idea you could be nominated for your brand recognition skills.

Dempsey gets my vote. He was an end line to end line player with strength, speed, and skill.

    Good job

We're splitting hairs between Marshall and Dempsey, and one of them will win, but Adu has impressed over the latter part of the season so he is certainly earned some consideration. Adu's contribution to the league also dwarfs that of Dempsey and Marshall.

i feel after the series with the crew, the Revs eating up marshall's side at times, clint making the second aggragate goal happen with a touch through ball to dorman - that dempsey will correctly recieve the award.

If Adu wins, MLS should stop the charade and make Pravda their official news publication.

Demps should win going away, even though his opponents - and their supporters by extension (can you say hardnosed player?) - aren't exactly fond of the man-child.

Indeed, but I expect him to pick it up just because it gets more headlines.

Josh Gros and Jeff Parke played better then Freddy.

Dempsey wins it, as well as MVP of MLS Cup.

(How can you vote for Marshall when Twellman schooled him last Sunday, ITS FRICKIN TWELLMAN!)

anyone else sense that dempsey's blurb in that release was far less than stellar when compared to both marshall's and freddy's? lord, and they even botched the last little bit there too.....'seven goals and one point'

the league had to hold his and his mama's hand to get him on the right team, they needed a commissioner's pick to get him into the all-star game, and now they've not only passed up some other possibly more worthy candidate.....but painted him with the most glorious brush of them all. (sorry, maybe this press release is to revs fans as tim mccarver is to sox fans!)
    :D

i have to disagree with monty there.....i think the league will be ashamed if anyone 'besides' freddy wins. unfortunately, that shame will foisted on them from fans and sponsors outside mls. 'what? the most heralded soccer player in world in the past 30 years can't even get roty in some crappy little no-name league?'

i'm guessing the revs make mls cup
freddy wins this thing the day before
and c.d. comes out the locker room for the big game with a cast on his hand after a kevin brown incident.

No way Freddy's getting ROTY... As much as I didn't want to admit it earlier in the season, Clint is the most deserving player of the bunch. If it hadn't of been for his goal against Chicago, the game wouldn't have opened up for you guys like it did... sure it was Steve's goal that clinched it, but Clint was the guy who took the initiative. Clint's a catalyst and there's no doubt in my mind (as well as those of many others) that's he's the rookie of the year.

By the way, a lot of people (not just Metro fans) feel that Jeff got robbed of a nod, just like he did back for All-Star. Clint, Chad and Jeff deserved to be on the roster and yet only one made it and neither of three got to play.

Oh and beat DC, please! :D

As crazy as this sounds, I wouldn't mind seeing a tie for ROTY between Dempsey and Marshall. You have two different types of players who shouldn't be judged using the same criteria, each bringing something different, but welcome to their clubs.

Yeah, Twellman schooled Marshall to some degree in last weekend's game, but from everything I've seen of the player, I keep telling no-one in particular "get thee to the National Team son."

I would not think it outside the realm of possibility that both get called into camp in a few weeks for the next WCQ against Jamaica.

    As for Freddy...

... he'll have his time, hopefully.

So, who votes for these awards? If it's the marketing crowd, it'll be Adu.

Would you trade Dempsey to get Marshall? no.
Would you trade Marshall to get Dempsey? yes.

Defenders are a dime a dozen.
Two-way players like Dempsey rarely come along.

    Ergo, Dempsey for MVP.

Not "good" defenders, and certainly not in MLS. Personally, I'd take Dempsey over Marshall, but I think both are deserving of the award for entirely different reasons.

Such drivel. Go ask the above on the Crew board and see who they rate higher. Which player contributed more to his team's success over the whole season? The Revs record with Dempsey on the field was not impressive. Seems to me we could have used Marshall alot more than Dempsey. We had a better midfield last year than this year and, like it or not, Dempsey's inexperience had alot to do with it. Dempsey may ultimately prove to be the better player, or may not, but Marshall probably had the more productive season and I think he'll win ROTY.

If you don't like it, don't read it. I've been reading lots of your drivel without insulting you.

I stated my opinion. If you don't like it, tough. Go over to the Big Frank thread and post your insults.

I don't think top flight defenders are a dime a dozen at all, and I don't think championships are won without them. I think Marshall is a fantastic player, and would be a huge asset to the Revs (not that there's any chance of that.)

I had said in a previous thread - in a moment of intense frustration - that "I would trade Twellman for Marshall in a heatbeat". I'm not sure I want to stick by that, but I don't think it's such a ridiculous idea either. I think there is a reasonable chance that in 2-4 years Marshall will be on the USMNT, and TnT won't be.

Dempsey for Marshall? Probably not, but that's more for the intangibles that CD brings rather than because of anything he's done that can be measured with statistics.

You couldn't be any more wrong. Marshall was inserted into a team that in the offseason was built to WIN MLS Cup, not just advance to the playoffs. He had a rock in the middle of the defense (Robin Frasier) taking pressure off him, he was left with the scraps and did a great job handling that. Dempsey was inserted in the midfield due to injuries and took the role of leading this team. I can recall countless times that Dempsey took on 3 or 4 guys and either set someone up for a goal or scored a goal. I witnessed both playing, and I have to pick Dempsey over Marshall. He's just better, he had a better year, and will win ROTY.

Come on, Clint definatly has the best nickname "The Texas Tornado" so he has to get rookie of the year. :)

In fairness, Fraiser was practically given to the Crew for salary cap reasons, and quite frankly because Colorado thought he was going to considerably regress this season due to age.

You want to ignore facts thats your perrogative, but Dempsy came to a team with the likes of Cancela (I know he struggled this year at times), Joseph, Ralston, Noonan, and Twellman. He certainly shouldn't have had to carry the load offensively and its very hard to argue that he didn't have some of the best, most seasoned offensive talent in the league surrounding him.

Meanwhile Marshall was placed next to a geriatric central defender with a rookie on one side of defense (Wingert) and on the other side a player with a propencity to push too far into attack and leave the defense out to dry (Hejduk). However, I will conceed Marshall did have the best MLS keeper form wise this season in Busch (at least in my opinion) who bailed the young kid out a number of times.

This isn't an easy decision, but to me I'd have to give my vote to Marshall based on the Crew's turnaround this season and the role he played in it. Dempsey is a spectacular young talent, there is no doubting that. However, as a Fire fan I've seen the loss of attacking talent (Beasley, Razov, Wolff, etc.) and defending talent (Kubic, Boca) and I can without a doubt say that the defensive talent is more difficult to replace. In fact, I think you can look at both the Fire and the Revolution's regular season records and almost completley point to the loss of important defenders (Llamosa and Bocanegra) as signficant factors.

Marshall would get my vote for ROTY, but hopefully the winner of this will be the USMNT in about 5 years with two more established pool players.
