In June, the last time I was in München, the stadium looked quite nice... I can't wait to watch Werder Bremen defeat Bayern in their new home!!
It depends on a secure and seperated path to and from the stadium for both sets of fans. The delapidated old Stadion an der Grünwaelder Strasse is just not secure enough in this regard. Hence any game that is seen in being in any way high risk, it is played at the Oly. JF
Nice picture. That is some serious BLLLLLLUUUUEEEEEE!!!!! They are going to be able to see that thing from space. Can't wait till they do an aerial night shot from the upper atmosphere on this one. like this...but with color
True the the Grünwalder Stadion is in a residential area, but it is only a 3 minute walk from an U-Bahn stop, Wettersteinplatz on the U1, a very short ride from Marienplatz (about 5 minutes or so, whereas it takes about 10 minutes to get to the Olympiastadion from Marienplatz). Thankfully, Allianz Arena will also have its own U-Bahn stop, else it would be very hard for many to get to games. Nonetheless, when I get to my next Bayern game (hopefully next season, or at the latest during 06-07), I am not going to enjoy the long ride out there. I'm afraid the travel time from Marienplatz to Allianz Arena will be similar to a trip from Berlin's Stadtmitte to the Olympiastadion way in the west. I hope I am merely over-exaggerating.
I used to take the U-Bahn to Am Hart daily (just south of Oberschleissheim) and it's not a too much longer ride from the Hauptbahnhof to Olympiastadion on a game day. Frottmaning is a similar distance north. I'm not sure if the ride to Frottmaning is U-Bahn or S-bahn though. S-Bahn are the surface trains, which take are a little slower than the U-Bahn or subway.
I think the distance of the ride isn't as worrisome as the time involved. Hopefully, they'll have enough trains running to keep the crowds moving. I was jammed in that little Olimpiapark U-Bahn station once waiting for a ride back to my friend's flat and didn't like it too much (those handrails can hurt). All will be fine though. It looks like a nice place and they've spent some money (though it's hard to tell how much went into pockets) on infrastructure. I'm from New England so I have horror stories of the long treks to and from the remote Foxborough stadia. There ain't no U-Bahn to Foxboro
It's the U2 as far as I remember. I hated driving in Munich, so everytime I went to the city for anything, I parked my car at the Frottmaning Park and Ride garage and took the U-Bahn in. You were above ground for the first three or four stops before you went underground.
In germany driving in Munich is compared to most other cities horrible. Everybody who has been to Berlin, Hamburg or Hanover will agree

Everywhere else, I either took public transit for the entire trip or parked my car somewhere near or in the city and used public transit to get to the stadium.....
Well, it was only their first attempt this year since going down, so i don't understand the "are you ever going to get out of Bundesliga 2 "?
