People don't want freedom. Freedom is scary. In real freedom you could starve to death or get mauled by a polar bear. What people ultimately crave is safety, security and comfort. Millenia of evolution has wired our brains to seek safety. We really only want just enough freedom to be comfortable and not be bossed around too much. So it's only natural as this world seems to become more uncertain, feeble people will flock to the strongmen. It's scary to think of this turning into a vicious cycle. As the strongmen create more instability and fear it only makes the people more dependent on the strongman's protection. It's similar to the dynamics of a battered wife and abusive husband.
