Review: 2018 WC Qualifying - Towards winning our first WC title: А дело бывало -- и коза волка съедала.

Discussion in 'The Netherlands' started by DRB300, Jul 23, 2015.

?

Netherlands will end up as nr. 1 in the group.

  1. No-brainer. Of course we will.

    23.1%
  2. If we start like the Euro 2016 qualification, no way. We will go to Russia though.

    42.3%
  3. Not even going to qualify. We do a 2002.

    34.6%
  1. You're projecting too far ahead in the future. You only can see into the future about 18 months with the current young kids in the 17/18 age acting.

The Germans play really well without wingers. But i'm not so pessimistic as you. Bergwijn is a wonderful player who combines speed and good technique. Depay is not done.

There are really no big winger talents coming on, Fernandes from Feyenoord has great qualities, but it looks like the guy has a ghetto mentality, Ould-Chikh more or less the same, made a stupid mistake moving to Benfica too early and has also chosen Marocco. The generation 2002 has some great winger talents, but it's too early to know how they will end up, and if they make it, it won't be before 7/8 years past by.

Berghuis is not a winger, he never was but due to a lack of height has been moved to the wings. Excellent player, but not really a winger.

Maybe we could have embraced the current form of our players a little more (and also considering our wing problems) and given this a try versus France:

    Stekelenburg
Karsdorp - van Dijk - de Vrij - Blind - Kongolo
    Clasie - Strootman
    Wijnaldum
    Promes - Janssen (or Dost?)

(if Sneijder had have been fit, then Wijnaldum beside Strootman and Clasie out)

    Yeah nothing new.

He says that all the players that won the youth EC a decade ago failed as footballers while they should have been the backbone of our team now. Players in the category 25-30 y/o are the core of any successful team. In our failed qualification we had only Cillessen, Krul, Blind and Vd Wiel in that age group. The lost generation ********ed us over.

@JC-14 and Krul didnt even play really.. um, dank je

@Gilbertsson yes, my mothers' family immigrated to Canada from Holland in the 50s.
I can read it pretty good, but as I just dont hear it anymore since Oma and Opa (Cori van Es from Delft, Sybe Pals from some farm area near Heerenveen, who met helping out as nurses during WWII) have now passed away and my mother no longer speaks it.. are you in Toronto, similar story for you?

I suppose Krul can say he is the only dutch keeper who did not allow 1 single goal against during the EC qualification.
Too bad we only managed to get 80 mins out of him, and Zoet came on and let in a goal! hah

Blind explained his choice for Schaars by the fact he wants to have an experienced central midfielder in his squad and believes there's a problem with the midfield.

Schaars is a good player tbh, he is underrated where Strootman is overrated. Is there a thing Strootman can do better than Schaars ? I would be tempted to say defending but I'm not even sure, Schaars can defend with a certain grit that I like sometimes even if he is relatively slow, Strootman is even slower and always late on his opponent.
And when it comes to the passes and vision, Schaars is better than Strootman .

That being said, I wouldn't call Schaars cause he is too old and has nothing to offer for the future.

I'm still waiting for Willems as a CM but I guess it won't happen as long as he is with Cocu. As I've already said, Willems as midfielder can be a more technical and less defensive version of Lassana Diarra or Ngolo Kante.

Propper is called once again after his utter shitty game against France and bad form with PSV while Fer is still being ignored, this is nonsense...

  16. Who cares about the far future now? The near future (=qualifying 2018) is what matters and if Schaars fits the bill for that he should play. The Orange team isnot a developing team. It's the team in which players have to deliver.

This would be true for a team like Estonia but the Netherlands should have enough talent and ambition to create a project and make long terms plans.

    Quite Right

Hold on! both of those guys are great defenders. Willems can't defend as a LB, what makes you think he will do any better as a CM? I think he would be a disaster.

Propper is a step too slow in both foot speed and decision making to play for the NT. I'm sure he is a good choice for minnow teams like LUX but not the other teams in the group. Fer is deserving of a call up. Even Nouri is a better choice!!!

Willems physical condition is not optimal. He seems to be overweight. A high level athlete can not afford to have such chubby cheeks. I wonder about the work ethic of most of our young players.

Willems was initially a fustal central midfielder before to play as LB with PSV.

He won't be a Nigel De Jong defensivly but he can be a kind of Ngolo Kante as I said . Plus defending on the sides and in the center of the field isn't really the same.

I've made this remark last year about Vilhena who's even more chubby than Willems, how come he isn't asked to lose weight ? He would be more agile.

I don't get this, jens toornstra is always over looked jus because he more seen as midfielder, but then Danny goes on to use Klaassen on the wing especially vs a team like France.

As I see it Toornstra by far has been the most consistent dutch player in eredivisie.

    Consistent in what regards?
actually because of injury, wasnt Toornstra was on the bench v France?

Barring injury it will likely be Sneijder and Robben on the wings for Blind anyway

Or does Blind put Sneijder into the middle if Promes is fit?

I dont mind Schaars being named in the provisional squad - which doesnt really matter anyway.
Seems like a decent place to acknowledging probably the most efficient DM in the eredivisie (along with El Ahmadi) and the with the most touches and interceptions of any player (per Opta stats). Obviously as Heerenveen captain who has played every minute for them so far he is a huge reason for their sitting on 3rd and have lost only 1 - although maybe worth mentioning that so far their only top half tests have been an early home win to slow starters Twente and their recent draw against slumping PSV (which was close to a 1-0 win, if not for that unlucky St Juste own goal).
Will be good to see him tomorrow v Feyenoord!

I do agree though that as far as offering to the future of the actual squad of 23 - if the player spot likely does not play anyway then why not begin to bring in some youngsters to groom, and to learn the systems?
