I was thinking about how those euro 2000 and wc 2006 loses to france really upset me at the time.

Then in the following decade we beat them in their own stadium to take the Euro cup.

    Insane.

I've already rewatched all our games 3 times if you count when I watched them live

Honestly 2006 was always a bigger burn for me compared to 2004. There was still a lot of good to take away from 2004; host country, finals appearance, great team, great tournament, solidified our position in Europe and the world, only lost to a shit Greece team who played anti football anyway, etc

2006 we got shafted by a scrap penalty for the second time against France, emotional last tournament for my favorite legend figo, last tournament where we had strikers with goal scoring instincts, potential world cup final snatched from our grasp by a cocky French side, sometimes I imagine we had made it to the final and actually beat Italy or germany, we would be considered amongst the elite and would have never been shit on by media or pundits like we were this tournament. Hell even if we made the final without winning we would have more respect. The world cup is the biggest prize and we got shit on by a shit penalty. Most importantly, we would no longer be subjected to "4 stars bro" ad nauseam

I know others will disagree with me, feels good to be champions of Europe, but I have no doubt that Portugal has the talent and most importantly the mentality to be world champions some day

Not a chance my friend. Euro 2004 embodied the "loser" mentality Portugal carried. Portugal was on the losing end of arguably the biggest upset in international football history. If we had won that, we would have (all else equal) more European Championships than Italy... ******** Scolari. ******** Madail for renewing with him just because he made the final. And ******** France just because.

I've calmed down in regards to watching videos of the final lately.

Now, it's just watching Eder's goal when I wake up every day, basically replacing my morning coffee, and once before bed to ensure I have sweet dreams.

    100% right you are
You know who changed the mentality of Portugal?

    Cristiano. His winners
Mentality , champion attitude and hatred of losing spread around our squad and that was the difference this tournament (apart from good coaching and better than usual squad depth due to the emergence of younger players like Sanches , João Mario , Guerrero, and William etc).

While statistically he didn't exactly exactly tear the tournament apart (although he still had good numbers) , his mentality raised the level of his teammates in the same way zidane used to for France.

Besides the final the 2004 European championships will always be a special occasion for me the tournament itself was probably one of the best organized European championships ever the teams we beat to get to that final where insane everything about that tournament was great besides the final Full credit to Greece they knocked out some good teams as well to get to that final

But I will never forget that final I don't think I ate for two straight weeks after that it was like a death in the family maybe even worse but I'm not gonna lie watching us win 2016 European championships with my father side by side was a special moment

    People don't get it still

    Euro 2004 and Scolari goal
"We'll make it out of the group, that is our goal"

    Euro 2016 and santos

"We'll be back here (stade de France)on 10 July 2016"

The goal was always to WIN

I am sure most of you guys are aware of the site "Portugoal.net".

There was a great podcast before the Euro started when they talked about that specifically on that podcast....that the attitude from Santos which resonated to the whole team was that, we can win this thing. We will be at the final. That sense of confidence is something that was never seen before a tournament from the Portugal NT. Kinda like "The Secret", just believe and take it from there.

We finally got the monkey off our back and now the Portuguese will always have that extra spring in their step and believe.

Someone needs to explain to me where this "loser" mentality was clearly visible cause I didn't see it. What the hell is a losing mentality anyway, makes no sense. As a team, you come out to win, no matter the level, no matter if you have a Cristiano on your side or not. Every player wants to win

I've seen tournaments where our players were over confident, 2002, 2010, 2014, yes, and ended up coming up short, but to say that the team lost because they were fine with losing is disrespectful and nonsensical

That is not a losing mentality.

We had a fear of success right down through our youth teams. Best example is the U21 final we made Sweden look like 5 year olds for the first 15 minutes but no one bothered to actually try and score after that we lost confidence and Sweden grew in confidence. By the time the PK's rolled around our players were mentally defeated.

No one is "fine with it" it's just a back of your head, confidence issue.

Portugal were at the losing end of the biggest upsets in history of both the European Championship & U-21 European Championship, so the two highest levels of national team competition in Europe. That is not a coincidence. No one is saying anything about "being fine with losing" it's a matter of whether they had the balls to actually go for the win and not let anything mental interfere.

I disagree man. A huge part of the game is mental.

and Ronaldo's mentality is super strong and I think it affected the rest of the team.

Scolari in 2006 said the portuguese players never believed they could win it all and he tried to convince them otherwise.

Anyway I thank god every day that Jose aveiro plowed maria averio and produced the best footballer our nation has ever seen. He's instilled confidence in our federation like never before. He will be crucial for us in Russia just like he was in france

    Somos os maiores
    Ouve o que eu digo
    Somos os maiores
Não há um povo como nós
    Somos os maiores
    Agora e sempre
    Somos os maiores
    Ó minha gente
    Somos os maiores
    Vamos erguer a nossa voz
    Somos os maiores
    Somos os maiores
    Nós, fizemos caravelas
escrevemos nas estrelas coisas que ninguem mais escreveu
    Nós, deixamos a nossa glória
    Canta comigo
    Somos os maiores
    Ouve o que eu digo
    Somos os maiores
Não há um povo como nós
    Somos os maiores
    Agora e sempre
    Somos os maiores
    Ó minha gente
    Somos os maiores
    Vamos erguer a nossa voz
    Canta comigo
    Somos os maiores
    Ouve o que eu digo
    Somos os maiores
