Either way, her coach sounds like an idiot. What coach in any sport anywhere would not consider this a distraction and know that it is a team killer? "Well, Grant, that's between Meghan and the league. Our job is to stay focused on, you know, winning soccer games" Not this woman; oh no,she's too busy being upset that nobody informed Ms Rapinoe in advance of the change in routine. That team is now officially "Meghan and the Pips"
For me I wouldn't call it anti-American but I would perceive it a bit differently if she does it in USA uniform rather than the Reign. If the anthem and other American symbols are that problematic for you, then you shouldn't be accepting an invitation to become one yourself, IMO. To do so kind of comes off as being a bit of a mercenary. "Sure I'll take this paycheck and play, but I won't be proud of it."
Dysfunction level for the NWSL teams, players. USWNT players, owners, USSF is off the charts in this league enterprise. Makes MLS look like the NFL
One of the imbeciles on MSNBC -excuse me, ESPN - was making this same point earlier; he specifically said, with a chuckle, that the Spirit's "PR Department" blew this. Maybe, but I doubt it. Rapinoe was a story everywhere - including the ESPN scroll, Pardon the Interruption, all of those - days before. She would have been again. I would think the management considered the options, and I doubt if they thought for one minute that one of the likely outcomes was "everybody ignores it". They had a couple options they weren't thrilled with, chose one and probably aren't terribly surprised at the result. Maybe a bit at the intensity. It's what happens when you take a stand. You do what you think is right and accept the consequences. Some people could take a lesson.
Plausible. By the by - and I've asked this before - has ESPN really gotten that bad? I've only recently realized I'm watching them hardly at all, and of the stuff I actually do watch, it's re-runs of some of the 30 For 30s, several of which are totally outstanding, even though Simmons, the overbearing wanker, was the impetus behind them.
When we finally get bored in this thread, we should ask @Ismitje to move it to the WNT forum. Think of the fun we'll have then. If there's a forum I avoid more than the MNT or YA forums, it is possibly the WNT forum.
And lo and behold, one such case appears: "Sailor faces discipline after viral flag protest" - Military.com
In her mind, and in the minds of 99.99% of the idiots that squawk about this kind of crap on social media, simply feeling an emotion and expressing yourself based on that emotion is sufficient. The really pathetic part is that these people legitimately believe this is doing good. This is literally just another version of the annual "Washington Redskins" debate. At the end of the day nobody actually gives a shit about problems like extreme poverty, domestic violence, and alcoholism that plague many tribes. Just like how at the end of the day nobody actually gives a shit about problems like black on black homicides, broken family units, and rampant drug use in black communities. Confronting uncomfortable issues does not make people feel good about themselves. So instead we just get a lot of posturing and a lot of easy points scored on Facebook and Twitter, because that nonsense does make people feel good about themselves. Politicians do this all the time too because it gets them elected. Nothing actually gets resolved and no one is better off.
It's pretty amazing, but from what I can tell there's so little traffic there, they seem to be able to pretty freely avoid all mention of most controversy (except the Hope Suspension thread, but that seems to have run out of steam).
The flip side is the nobodies, particularly other minorities, that believe such things are somehow an honor bestowed on tribes. I still get a chuckle (I just did actually) remembering the FCD fan that claimed he was 1/3 Irish | 1/3 Cherokee | 1/3 American. I thought for a moment about how to explain how that couldn't work, then I remembered he was part Irish and I shouldn't waste my time
Not sure if any of you are checking out the Twitter conversation tonight, much of which has been pretty good, but I finally had to mute someone. I just love being lectured by people with no real-world experience in anything.
USWNT online soccer supporters profile (male or female): - Under 30 and social media active - underemployed or marginally employed, likely renters not owners, angry at "the man" for their unearned fortune - never worked in a corporate or organized business setting where rules have to be followed or consequences exist for rule-breaking - coddled and got participation trophies for everything - lazy - think their opinion is the only one that counts and if you are not 1,000% supportive of the position, you are the enemy
Actually that doesn't match the profiles of the folks in my circle of friends who are up in arms about all of this at all. The one thing that links them is they are not fans of soccer in general, or of the NWSL, but follow the USNWT at/through major tournaments and if they play near them. Lots of urban professionals, many female, several gay, and the "struggles" of the players vis-a-vis pay and facilities and the like are perceived to mirror their own.
Maybe they are just underachievers who want to blame someone for their lack of success and "struggles".
I generally seek to be even-keeled on the site, but this is an amazingly shitty response. These are people I know well, folks who have suffered discrimination and who have fought tooth and nail for what they have, and you flippantly dismissing them without knowing a damn thing about them is a terrific example of all that is wrong with this kind of discourse. I don't need to list their achievements - for some it is many - because no one deserved that insensitive blanket slander you tossed off so easily regardless of education, career, wealth, possessions, intellect, or whatever else you might have meant they were deficient in. {Snip - made it personal and pulled it back}
I said "maybe" BTW. I said that because it is difficult in the social media/everyone is a victim era parsing to figure out people actually harmed and the people who perceived they are harmed (and then insist if they perceive it, it must be true!). Everyone overcomes "struggles", everyone's "discriminated against" - go into HR at a major company and look at the employees groups that are either protected classes or classes that can't be terminated in a normal manner. It's everyone but white males under 40
