    Wood hardly sees the ball.

Heck of a score, ala WC Jones.

This game tells me Wood needs a lot of time with his teammates to gel, he expects the ball wide and the pass is inside and visa-versa.

At least Bobby kept his run out of the way to give Halilovic space to drive at his marker.

Bobby had two decent chances in the second: one was grabbed by their keeper before he could finish, one a well-hit mid-distance shot that hit the post.

Otherwise, he often looked out of synch with the other attackers, running in the wrong direction. Their goal came from an individual moment of brilliance by Halilovic, who ignored Wood in that sequence and sent a nice ball, deflected by a defender.

Overall, HSV suffered to get past a mid-table 3.Liga side. Not good. This season they may well be the Sunderland of the Bundesliga.

according to soccernet HSV had 68% possession and outshot them 16 (6 on goal) to 7(1)...that hardly seems like a team struggling to control the game. Struggling to break down a defensive opponent maybe, but they won't have that obstacle much in the BL.

This season? That's their default position lately, escape artists.

Whatever the stats, Zwickau were unlucky to lose the game: their attacks in the first 20 minutes of the second half were more dangerous than anything HSV had created in the first, and in the last five minutes they were two inches away from tying it.

Sorry, but HSV looks like a weak side.

Is. Not looks like. Until they've shown that they've overcome their recent ineptitude.

Judging by the 1st round of the German Cup is not a wise thing to do, and history proves it. A game where the Bundesliga side play their first game of the season away, to teams who already played 3 to 4 official games in their season. You can expect struggles and some surprises.

Hamburg controlled the game, but failed to open up spaces, Wood being invisible didn't help. They didn't gave the opponent a real chance. Most of the attacking players are summer additions, so they may need time to gel together.

The Bundesliga competitors were not that impressive too. Two teams eliminated. Four advanced through penalty shootout. Leverkusen narrowly winning 2-1 against a 5th division side. Gladbach narrowly winning 1-0 against a 4th division team. Wolfsburg narrowly winning 1-0 against a 3rd division side. That's more than half of the league struggling. So, you would look like a fool if you are going to base your expectations on the first round of German Cup, or may as well tip more than half of the league for relegation.

Okay, but as a Hamburg fan, would you back your side in recent years as a model of quality and stability? this game doesn't mean much, but the last five seasons?

The other sides you mention don't have a history as bottom-feeders in the league.

Also, HSV was playing with their first team. Which they need to do to get them to 'gel.'

I don't see them getting relegated (once again, they'll save themselves). Which is why I see them as the S'land of the BuLi, always close but always saving themselves by the skin of their teeth.

That midfield lacks creativity. Bobby is going to have to learn to create his own chances, like Halilovic did today.

They have more history of being bottom feeders clubs than HSV. Wolfsburg survived relegation in the last game in 2012. Gladbach were a 2nd division team and a constant escaper pre 2012.

People really stuck with the image they build about something and don't want to believe otherwise. HSV had two bad years in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, they are a stable mid-table team. From 2004 to 2011 they qualified to European competitions consecutively. They are now investing and building a team to return back to where they belong. HSV belong to the top teams in Germany, whether they made it or not. They are that big and want to be back there.

All Bundesliga teams played with their first team. As I said, most of the attacking players are new additions (Wood, Kostic, Halilovic snd Waldschmidt), they won't play like they know each other from the first game. You can't be that naïve to think otherwise.

HSV played without a real defensive midfielder today as Holtby and Ekdal were injured. A new defensive midfielder should be signed before the transfer window closes.

Comparing Sunderland to HSV is ridiculous and show some ignorance of the recent and past history. Sunderland is a yo-yo club, who goes up and down each decade and finishes most of their season in the lower half of the table. HSV have finished the majority of their season in the top half of the table, and since 2000 finished 12 times in top half of the table, more than half of them in European place. Do I need to mention how they are one of the biggest clubs in Germany and one of the most supported in the land?

Yeah always in relegation, because they have two bad years.

I can't take you seriously any more.

A big team in the Bundesliga to me are Munich, Schalke, Dortmund, Leverkusen or even Stuttgart (prior to relegation)

Hamburg hasn't been "BIG" in some years now. I recall they splurged the cash on Marcus Berg (some 10 million euros due to his u-21 performance in summer 09) and that didn't work out. And they signed van Nistlerooy and then the return of Van der Vaart and recent relegation fights.

Hamburg and Hertha are two should be huge clubs. To be fair, Hamburg has only been off for most of the last, what, five years (credit for a rebound midway through last season, but it was looking ugly and that is the image that sticks). I just checked the tables, and I admit I was remembering last year as a 14/15 finish while it was 10th, but 15 and 16 three times in recent years indicates a bit of a slump.

It's been a long time since Hamburg had to break down a defensive opponent, and it'll be be another long time before they ever have to. I swear, there have been times over the last 2-3 seasons when they were behind - at home - and were still playing on the counter. Or trying to.

    A trifle touchy, no?

Hamburg have never been relegated from BL1, but three of the last five seasons (15th in 2011-12, and the relegation play-off in 2013-14 & 2014-15) have been really, really bad. One season of mid-table mediocrity isn't enough to wipe that stain away.

this is big soccer man. When Michael Bradley first moved to AS Roma, some posters were comparing AS Roma and Chievo (as a lateral move)...due to Chievo finishing 7 points behind AS Roma in one season.

In recent history, HSV has finished:

    15th (11-12)
    7th (12-13)
16th (13-14) ---> saved from relegation by winning the play-off
16th (14-15) ---> saved from relegation by winning the play-off
    10th (15-16)

Considering it's only 18 teams, they have finished in the bottom half 4 out of 5 times in the last five seasons.

    By comparison, Sunderland:

    13th (11-12)
    17th (12-13) --> right above red line
    14th (13-14)
    16th (14-15)
    17th (15-16) --> right above red line

Out of 20 teams, so they are 5 by 5 ending in the bottom half.

Yet, the difference is not that big. You're a fan of HSV, though, so kudos for defending your club.

PS: The way I see it, I expect them to finish around 14 this season. Let's see what happens, I'm seldom wrong though.
