Mr. Cangialosi thinks its "the dead of summer" in (southern) Brasil right now. :D

Made a comment about how the late 22h00 kick-off between Colombia and France nullified the advantage that Colombia might have had by playing in South America in the dead of summer.

How could you not know that it isn't hot in the place you are based? I mean, did the broadcasting crew just fly-in 2 hours before kick-off?

News - I am told by NBC PR that NBC Universo is no longer carrying Saturday's United States vs France womens soccer match.
I don't know why. I don't know what other programming NBC Universo has in the time slot.
I do know its not other Olympic programming.
Match will still air on NBCSN and the Olympic soccer specialty channel.

As pointed out by a reader - NBCSN cut to 60 seconds of commercials during the 33rd minute of its LIVE broadcast of Fiji vs South Korea soccer match. This was not the first time over the last two days that a NBC Olympics channel cut out of a LIVE soccer broadcast for commercials.

    Geoff Sykes @geoffsykes888 -
Most soccer matches I've watched so far this Olympics have had at least 1 commercial break.

    32 Flags @32flags -
I remember they did it periodically in 2012. Know they did it during the United States/France women's match that Olympics.

Not surprising, IMO. They are marketing the heck of the women's soccer competition! Even the main NBC channel has been profiling the US team and its players almost daily since at least the past couple of weeks. And also playing a game 2 days before the Olympics officially open gives it a boost as there is no competition from other events.

OTOH, barely a peep uttered about the men's soccer competition. Again, not surprising but the ratings for yesterday's matches were probably not great (I'm guessing).

In South America we have three ESPN and three Fox Sports television channels, plus national channels (TyC Sports in Argentina, Canal 5 in Uruguay) and DirecTV Sports.

The Opening Ceremony of the Rio Olympics haven’t even started yet and NBC’s coverage of the Games has already left a bad taste in some people’s mouths. Over the first two days of the women’s and men’s Olympic soccer tournaments, NBC has been inserting commercials while matches are taking place.

NBC isn’t doing this in every match but they have periodically inserted a commercial on certain matches. Wednesday - A commercial was shown during the Zimbabwe vs Germany women’s match on the USA Network. Thursday - The Fiji vs South Korea mens' match on NBC Sports Network was interrupted with a commercial in the first half.

I missed the first days of live coverage since I was traveling. I set my DVR for the soccer channel remotely via the DTV app but unfortunately, something happened and the DVR recorded all of the NBC channels except for Iraq-Denmark, which I am watching now. So, a couple questions:

    1. It looks like, via the posts above, that the NBC channels are all using commercial interruptions, which sucks. Did this happen with the soccer channel as well? And did NBC Universo/Telemundo interrupt as well or just the English language NBC channels?

    2. Does anyone know a spoiler free site that lists broadcast times for repeats on the soccer channel? Currently DTV's soccer channel lists men's soccer but the channel is showing women's soccer. I'd like to find out an accurate schedule for these repeats, especially if the answer to my first question is that the soccer channel is commercial free.

    3. Iraq-Denmark on NBCSN did not feature anthems but the Soccer Channel showed anthems. Was this the standard trend for the broadcasts?

FYI, I'm mostly asking about men's soccer since I don't have enough time to watch men's and women's games until the knock-out rounds but details about men's and women's games might be useful to other folks. Thanks.

Evidently their Olympic replay listings are as vague as they were for the Premier league last season:rolleyes:

    Daniel,

    1. Don't know about telemundo but I can tell you that the dedicated Soccer Channel does not have commercial breaks and very much deals with the broadcasts like a feed channel. Perfect for recording.

    2. The Soccer Channel is showing basically 5 straight live games followed by the 3 games they could not broadcast due to overlap. If you use the DTV guide, you can just scroll and all the games are listed making it easy to record all of the games. Live coverage on Sunday starts at 11am (central) and end at 10pm - which is then followed by 3 delayed games. They are all labelled. If it helps, I have the schedule at http://soccertvblog.com/rio2016-mens/. I do not believe there are any repeats shown on any channel besides the Soccer Channel.

    3. Now that most of the sports are going on, I seriously doubt you will see any more anthems on NBCSN or any other channel besides the dedicated channel.

Thanks for the replies. It will be easier for me to deal with going forward since I am home. I used the DTV app to record channel 205-1 for all games but only one of the games recorded and somehow recorded the 604 (I think that's the number) channel. All other games I set to record via the app recorded via NBCSN or USA, which meant I ended up with 2 recordings from these channels since I had set those before I left.

The soccer channel, as I noted, currently lists men's games but is showing women's games and the times listed are way off. A game was supposed to start at 9PM central time and that game was 27 minutes into Brazil's women's game when I turned on the channel at 9:04PM central time. I assume that the men's repeats either aired earlier today (Friday) or will air late today. Or not at all. But a spoiler-free listing of repeats during non-live action days would be great in general.

@danielmak you have to be careful recording things via the directv app because inexplicably, even if you select something from the guide for channel 205-1 and then press record, on the next screen it will default to one of the "regular" NBC channels. For the example of the USA-France women's game tomorrow (1 pm pacific) I've included some screenshots. Even though I selected the game on game 205-1 on the guide, and then pressed record, on the confirmation screen it defaults to 220 nbcsn which is also showing the game. I have to press the channel again to toggle back to 205-1. Apologies if you know this, but maybe it will be helpful to someone else. I watched a ton of soccer on Telemundo, NBC Universo and USA and did not see any commercials.

Looking at the posts above the matches they decided to put commercials in were good choices because those games were basically decided within the first 10 minutes of the game. I must have changed channels before the commercials.

(Not to spoil anything for anyone but you have to be a moron to think that those would be close games.)

Actually the Fiji-South Korea match was close when the commercial was taken - 33 min - with the score 1-0 South Korea at the time with the goal actually coming just a minute earlier. It didn't became a blowout until the 63 min when South Korea scored three goals in the span of two minutes.

I'm guessing NBC figured there wouldn't be another goal scored right away so thats why they took a commercial break then. Glad they didn't use that theory after the first South Korea goal in the second half - they would have missed at least one goal. I'm wondering if they had plan on taking another commercial during the soccer half but passed because they didn't want to miss another South Korean goal.

I don't mind them taking a 30 sec/60 sec commercial break once per match just to please advertisers. Just hope its done at a reasonable time - maybe during water breaks? or an injury - and they don't miss an important goal.

@daniloni Thanks for the screenshots. This is helpful. I searched by channel number rather than event, but maybe it jumped back on me without me noticing. The funny thing is that I used channel 205-1 for all of the games set via the app but the one that actually recorded via the soccer channel was on the 600 channel (I think 604). Anyway, it looks like a lot of the games started re-airing last night around 11pm so I'm starting some marathon viewing now.

Re: commercial interruptions, I tend to disagree. I think the network needs advertising dollars and advertising dollars attached to football is good for the sport. But I also believe that using bugs on the screen is a more effective tool and one that won't piss off viewers who have expectations about football broadcasts. Or minimize the screen to 1/3 and use the other 2/3 for some kind of ad. I'm cool with that because no action will be missed and the advertisers have a captive audience.

It doesn't matter if you searched by channel number initially. It will jump back to 220 or other "real" NBC channel (assuming another channel is showing the event) so on the next screen after playing record you have to set it back to the dedicated channel. With regard to 205-1 v 600-1 aren't these just mirrored?

Yeah, I think they are mirrored, so it's odd that I set for one and then the recording was from another channel.

One more thing. Does anyone know how to change the settings in the DTV DVR so that DTV icon doesn't show on the screen telling us to choose the red button for more Olympics info? Or to at least minimize the time that the icon shows?
